Adria Twin sp van
Exp
Since 1999
Hi guys, we have a 2019 Adria Twin 600spb bought from new. The VED ( ROAD TAX) is now £345 per year. I am just wondering what others of a similar age are paying as no emissions are stated on the log book but type approval Is. So purely on gvw. Of 3500kgs. I've had problems with DVLA In the past so don't trust their decisions.
Thanks.
Si

I would never SORN a Motorhome as you need to take it out for a good run every few weeks to keep it in good shape.
We did during covid (ran it round storage yard a couple of time's) but we are out most months so no good for us but we did our car when in Spain for February.

Never thought of this before, can I uprate to get cheaper tax but not bother with C1.
If not I know it's just a paper exercise to get c11 but are there any disadvantages.

No. If your max is over 3.5T you need a C1

Another thing to consider if upgrading above 3500kg is the caz charge can increase significantly.

For example, when we went to Abbey Wood last year, our van was around £15-20, and the brother in laws 4500kg was around £100, outweighing the reduced RFL fee

Reduction in speed limits in the U.K. is not governed by GVW for motorhomes, it’s Maximum Unladen Weight of < or > than 3.05 tonnes that provides the cutoff point.
and a number of folk get it wrong thinking it's 3.50 tonnes GVW in line with the C1 licence classification!:whistle2:

Just checked and sadly it is now £345 or £189.75 for 6mths, that’s a TC11 PLG which most Moho’s up to 3500kg sit under, they are based on max or gross vehicle weight and only cheaper if under 1549cc. 3501-7500kg rated pay £165, if you have part or full air suspension fitted that could likely enable re-rating but the fitting company will confirm. My Chausson is fitted with it and re-registered at 4400kg so over a ton carrying capacity now and although I’d not use that it means not worrying about using with water tanks full if going off-grid and plenty of other non-essentials 😏

I’m at Abbey Wood next month and only interested in model and size, never questioned GVW

I will never understand our government, surely a heavier vehicle causes more damage to the roads.
Yes all the evs do more damage to the roads than my scooter (£50ish)🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The speed limits not being aligned with the cut off for classes of vehicle by weight is bonkers. It would make a lot of sense to change to 3500 all up being the cut off for both like in Europe. How can anyone who stops a motorhome check unladen weight easily or look it up?

It's nothing to do with road damage..
HGV's proportionally cheaper and differant rate....(and as over >3500KG motorhomes are techniqually classed as HGV's) to help the commerce of the tranport industry to be able to transport goods (that we all want and need) at a reasonable cost and not be crippled with extortionate expence of excessive Road Fund License.

Strange.. my Euro 5. 4200kg for the ULEZ only comes out (according to TFL checker) at £12.50/day. !!

was going to add that sometimes with CAZ it goes down when over 3500 Kg as classed as PHGV. I noted this when looking at couple of years ago and commented on the anomaly. Think it is in relation to Euro 5

I just bought a new Hobby Vantura on tour, when I returned home to Jersey with it, I was charged £6105.00 ! It is a one off payment but I think I would prefer a smaller yearly charge.

Dickyb, I was in the same predicament as you; although my tax was just short of £800, I didn’t require any additional weight but wanted to reduce the tax burden. I used Dee @ https://www.vanweightengineering.com/, which was just a paperwork exercise ( no visit to the weigh bridge, etc). The process was seamless, with a full guide provided and Dee completing all the paperwork. All I had to do was print, sign, and send it off to DVLA, and my new V5 arrived within two weeks, followed by my new weight plate, and now my tax is £165 ( credit also to the guys on this forum for pointing me in the right direction ).

The only down side is when you reach 70 and need to retain C1.

Cost of D4 medical, which if done by your GP will hurt your wallet, but if you use D4drivers it's a lot less and they can do the eye sight test as well.

I see your point. Maybe hgv should be trucks that transport goods not heavy vans? Say 7.5 tons and over.

Thanks Guys for your input, uprating gvw seems the answer, but I'm 70 in 3 years so may need to downgrade then. See how it goes.

Unless you have specific reasons to believe on your current health state that you might not pass the D4 medical at 70, then I suggest you do not worry about it. I have passed 5 renewals of my C1, as I am now 82, and continue to think that I will pass the next one, in 3 years.

You do seem very against over 3.5t moho's... or are you just bitter that your lighter moho costs more to tax than heavier ones??
No, not at all and I am suprised at your comment. I have C1 and could have one. Just like a fair and logical system. Both weights have their advantages and disadvantages.
