Adria Twin sp van
Exp
Since 1999
Hi guys, we have a 2019 Adria Twin 600spb bought from new. The VED ( ROAD TAX) is now £345 per year. I am just wondering what others of a similar age are paying as no emissions are stated on the log book but type approval Is. So purely on gvw. Of 3500kgs. I've had problems with DVLA In the past so don't trust their decisions.
Thanks.
Si

Used to be on emissions, but changed in 2018 to flat rate. And £345 is the correct rate for a private or light goods moho weighing 3500kg or less with an engine over 1549cc.

I was quoted £180 to up plate my van by VWE. Might have to seriously look at that in the next few months, the cost would be recouped with the savings in VED.
Assuming you have a C1 licence entitlement.

I'm just in the process of up plating our Adria 640 SLB. I've gone with VWE. Going from 3500kg to 3900kg. All the calcs have been done and I'm waiting until we return form a short European trip to submit paperwork and V5 to DVLA.

Check your plate under the bonnet as the Fiat plate will probably show 3650kg as the allowable weight. If it does, you can simply send off the V5 with £25 to DVLA changing the weight to 3650kg.
Don't pay an outside company for this, it is really simple. Also, a paper excercise to change back when you sell , (should the buyer need it to be under 3500 for a younger person's licence).

Thats handy to know. I really need to get the axles weighed when fuly loaded though to see if I need to change those as well.

be aware that this depends on how DVLA are feeling at any particular time! or perhaps which desk Jockey picks up your paperwork. I did exactly this with a covering note. They returned it all and insisted I resubmit with a supporting written statement from a recognised vehicle engineer.

We’re considering this to save on road tax, don’t need the extra weight as we only have a 5.95 m and a 840kg payload, we are hoping to go to the eu for 90 days so would there be any negative costs associated with up plating in the eu ? EG crit air, ferry costs, tolls and low weight roads etc, I presume it would no longer be eligible for a class 7 mot and wondered what that entailed? Also does it affect insurance premiums ?
Thanks

Few of them about.I think they mean garage fitters.
they mean people like SV Tech and Van Weigh Engineering.

most garage fitters dont have the letters after their name that DVLA look for. ( complete rubish i know but thats the way they think )

That’s exactly the reason I’m going down to 3500kgs Being above that is a right Pia in Austria, Slovenia Czech Hungary Poland and prob a few more🤷‍♂️ All need a box of some kind for the motorways and expressways and in some countries main roads! Too much hassle, not to mention the different speed limits🤷‍♂️🤔

If you registered as motorcaravan ( or even van with windows) you should be class 4.... not 7 regardless of weight...
Thanks, I didn’t realise that, so I’m only limited to the mot station having the spec to get a big vehicle in the workshop

Did they state what they would accept as a 'Recognised vehicle engineer', and with what qualifications?

Not as far as I remember. This was a few years ago.
I remember I called dvla and during the conversation svtech was mentioned as an example of suitably qualified, so I called them gave them the vehicle details and asked for guidance. They sorted it with dvla over the phone for a fee.

Svtech then told me to resubmit my papers and it all came through.
I asked svtech for a copy of what was sent to dvla and they simply said it was cleared.

At the time I was just happy it got sorted.

Impacts speed limits as well and in Europe they differ from country to country and from memory are defined against gross weight. Ferry to Ireland seems to be more governed by length and height rather than weight, which I am assuming would be similar to many other routes.

The only issues to be aware of are some slight changes to speed limits. (e.g. in UK 50mph on single carriageway and 60mph on dual carriageway) However even these seem a grey area when it comes to motorhomes.

Officially you should have Angle Morts stickers in France but I never bother as the van is not any longer than a 3500 kg and police wouldn't know unless they check your V5.

Tolls, ferries etc tend to go on height and length - they don't weigh vehicles.

You could possibly find somewhere where the road is limited to 3500kg but again if you know you are not actually physically over that I wouldn't let it bother me.

So in practice very little impact.

When I downsized 2 years ago I was shocked to see the increase I was to pay on my 2.3Ltr motorhome, last year I paid £325 and with my tax due 1st. May will it be £345 or maybe even more with the latest mentions of vehicle tax increases?
Also worth a mention that I received an email from the RAC reminding me that the tax will need renewing and told me that I can apply 2 months earlier, application via the GOV web site told me that if I went ahead my tax would start from the 1st March but reminded me I didn’t need to tax it for another month, I would have lost 2 months tax money. Now waiting for the RAC to comment on their statement.

Reduction in speed limits in the U.K. is not governed by GVW for motorhomes, it’s Maximum Unladen Weight of < or > than 3.05 tonnes that provides the cutoff point. Can be difficult to establish exactly, (for the authorities ;) ), CoC from manufacturer with MRO shown will help with any defence if challenged, but very unlikely to change for an up plating exercise from 3500kg.

Agree with everything else you’re saying.

Thanks guys for all your detailed reply’s, we’ve decided to stay as we are and do some alternate sorning between the Moho and our Honda crv as both going to £345 ☹️ obviously we can only do complete months but that’s doable, if they added the road tax to the price of fuel that would suit us better but probably not others, if only they spent the money on the roads perhaps people would be happier paying?

I would never SORN a Motorhome as you need to take it out for a good run every few weeks to keep it in good shape.
