Always learning.
As you’ll be aware I’m new here and have a shed load of probably daft questions, but I’ll start by asking advice on TVs for a motorhome,ie best quality, picture etc,,won’t be used extensively but handy to have,,any idea ,views , advice would be greatly appreciated,,cheers,,,

I guess it may depend on where you are getting the signal from, aerial, sat dish or internet and do you want/need to run it off 12v or 240v, we have always used Avtex so can not compare but they have beeb fine.

Martin

Thanks for that,,I was thinking of a good all rounder to future proof myself, I’m just starting out and sticking my toe in the water ,rather than dive bombing in and regretting it later,,so any views are great for me.

We have a maxview self seeking satellite system and use our Sky Q box , the tv is a 22 inch Samsung smart tv with a Bose sound bar , cracking set up , proper home from home ,

We also have an Avtex and are really happy with it.
Also bought the Avtex Bluetooth sound bar which is really good quality for TV and also Spotify.

Thank you all, I haven’t invested in a sat dish ( yet), so I take it I don’t need to have a 12volt tv.?, I suppose a lot rests on wether we will be using hook ups or using sites without EHU,out MH has two leisure batteries so hopefully that should help shouldn’t it?

I use a normal TV and get extra channels via internet. Depends where you are going, I understand Sat don't work in southern europe. Internet via my mobile, no problem with signal etc so far in UK & Ireland. In europe I'll get a local sim if O2 not good enough. It's also the cheapest & easiest setup.

Thanks Colin, I only intend to stay in UK for the mo,but the mobile hotspot on the phone sounds great,it will save spending buckets of cash on a tv which I won’t really need,,saying that,,I bet I change my mind,,lol

If your sticking to a mains T/V the look on Freecycle and Trash nothing there are loads of free 17 22 inch sets given away. Because there are such good deals on large set everyone is changing at the moment. If you do change your mind nothing lost. And you will be helping the environment to boot 👍🏼🤔

Cheers Vipar,I have a couple of smaller TVs at home,so that’s a result.

Regarding tech and home entertainment systems in motorhomes , my van is my apartment on wheels and I want to mirror my 21st century home on the road . do you want a bed less comfortable In your van than at home ? Do you want your heating system to be less efficient than your system at home ? Do you want your kitchen to have the comforts of the 1950s or the 2020 s ? Im not camping and im certainly not prepared to slum it , i want luxury and cutting edge tech , will one day i rip out the diesel behemoth engine and install an electric 500 mile range conversion , hell yes !

There is this product, and other products from the same company, friend told me about it, he uses it in his van.Uses your Ipad or android tablet as the screen.

Just putting it here for awareness, and maybe somebody has first hand knowledge

I get everything you’ve said about the tech,,but it’s only a tiny part for me,,I’ve waited all my adult life for this so I want to enjoy it for what it is, I fancy taking a nice steady pace rather than bursting into a Usain bolt sprint, to start,,knowing me,that will all change,,lol

I have a couple of VisionPlus TV’s in my van - both small (1 is a 12” and the other I think is either 15 or 18”). They both have built in DVD players and I’m well pleased with the quality. I spend half my time ‘off grid’ so wanted 12v facility also. The reason I have 2 is purely to maximise the viewing angle - 1 is at the end of the fixed bed the other is up front with the seating.

We have a 21” Avtex, some say they are expensive but it does everything a mobile tv unit should so no issues there. Plug in the lap top or Apple TV. Can add usb sticks cd’s etc so nothing to dislike really.

Hi Wabs,

We got our first MH in February and went though this very same synario, We had access to an 12.4" iPad and used that while we decided what TV option to go for.

Have to say, we stopped looking. The iPad sits on the existing TV mount and does everything we need.

Fine where local sims are cheap, particularly Portugal- but we’ve not been lucky with finding cheap sims in France, since Joe got swallowed up by Virgin France. Most good deals seem only open to residents. 3 PAYG may be another option.

24” Manta tv and firestick......works for us!

(y)

The Cello traveller smart tv works well for us. I have a fire stick hooked up to it and can also play dvds saved to a portable usb hard drive too. Additional Apps can be run on tv and fire stick. We use a mi if and connect the tv to that. Satellite tuner also included if required. It’s light, value for money, good picture quality but the sound quality isn’t brilliant. I did notice Hitachi also do a 12/240 traveller tv as well somewhere

If people can’t or won’t fly or take cruises but we have an economic depression... will Motorhomes be in greater demand and values increase ?

That is a handy gadget. A useful MH viewing option at £35-£40
Nearly bought one straightaway but SWMBO pointed out it didn’t add to what we already have with SkyGo+ ☹️
The product user manual is here
Only small issue is the box provides its own WiFi network and you’ll have to hop between networks to get internet or TV.

As for the OP query, we haven’t filled the TV size whole the previous owners left.
We’re Mifi streaming to an iPad mini.

But a Cello C2030FT2S2 would fit nicely in the hole and then we’d make use of the powdered freeview antenna thing the previous owners also left.

We have two TVs in our van. An Avtex in the bedroom area and a Vision Plus for the lounge. They both do a job. The Avtex was around 3 times the price of the other. However in my humble opinion the Avtex is far better quality both in performance, build quality and looks. We have noticed many times that when the terrestrial signal is poor the Avtex will find channels whereas the VP one may struggle. We have started using both with a NowTV stick. That works fine with both TVs. Now that data costs have dropped dramatically the smart TV stick has become a good option for catch up TV and sports whilst on the go. Whilst 4G signal quality hasn't been a major problem I am considering looking into getting an exterior 4G antenna to eliminate any potential issues with using my phone as a hotspot.

Don't want to be a killjoy to your enthusiasm , but why do you want a TV?
And especially one that does everything.
Is it that you absolutely must keep up with the latest news, sport, soap operas etc?
Personally, and it's only my opinion, but I have only a radio when away, preferring to enjoy the surroundings I am in and not be controlled by the TV.
Unless I was to live full timing in our van, then the TV might be a needed piece of kit for information emergencies, but as I am not, and do not venture abroad in our van, I don't see the need for a TV.
Much prefer to get out and about, read, walk and enjoy the outdoor life that a motorhome brings.
My thoughts only though which suits my way of using my valuable time.
Good luck in whatever you choose and enjoy your new van.
Happy Motorhoming 😎😎

We had an Avtex for many years in our old van. Just before it was sold it went wrong and we sent it back to them for diagnosis. Confirmed dead, but made us a special offer which we took. However because we were part exchanging didn't want to put a new Avtex in the old van and bought a cheaper TV much advertised in the mags. Can't say the name, but it was rubbish as unless you viewed it straight on, the picture was either poor or not visible. Sound quality also really poor. The 19" Avtex we had bought for our new van was too big to fit comfortably where we wanted it. Avtex swapped it for a smaller TV, no quibble and full refund of the difference. Be careful what you buy and if you want quality and first class service I would go Avtex. You get what you pay for.

Yes I did exactly the same...but now I have bought a van which has satellite dish and dying to see if it will work as it’s a Caro 2002. For that I need a tv with a built in receiver...plus I want smart tv just in case the satellite doesn’t work..plus 12v...TV options then become a bit more limited....and expensive. Does anyone on here knows if a 2002 Satellite set up works ? And when are Avtex going to bring out a Smart TV ?
Edit....Ooh....just looked them up they do !
