Hi all, we have taken the plunge and recently bought our first motorhome, my wife Mel and I both caravanned and motorhomed as children and never lost the bug ... We intend to retire next year and head off on many adventures. We have just bought an Autotrail Savannah which we are very happy with, one question I would like to ask you seasoned funsters is about Satnavs, I have read there are ones on the market that cover motorhome ie height and length warnings for low bridges etc ..

Could anyone please advise of a good one to purchase, I have read some horror stories and don’t want to be the next !!

Btw this site is amazing and the blogs read so far have been so helpful so thanks in advance

I prefer apps on an iPad as they can be updated, swap between apps on them, cut/copy/paste info between screens, and easy to future plan when not sat in the drivers seat.

I prefer the IPad as well, they have excellent navigation systems and I’ve used mine for years.

Couple of screenshots from a recent journey.

We have a 'normal' TomTom and a Garmin Camper, the latter is no better than tom at using sensible roads. Check a roadmap and watch the road signs, even the camper one does not know all low bridges.

A bit of a minefield now. You can go from free to very expensive ones and all have their strengths and weaknesses.
We use the Garmin Camper 770. I'm of the view it's a high end sat nav with loads of good features and we have used it with confidence to Morocco and here in Crete. Occasionaly it puts in a bad route so I do a simple check before setting off. Other than that it's pretty faultless. Buy direct from Garmin to get the free lifetime updates. At the other end of the scale. Goggle and if you have no Internet connection Maps.me is an option and a good back up to have on your phone.

We've also got a Savannah and use a Garmin Camper 780 which we just updated to after a Camper 760 (still working and updating - it's a long story!).

A key benefit for us is we can forward plan \ check routes \ enter waypoints \ etc on a pc using Garmin BaseCamp (free download) prior to departure (or whilst in the middle of a trip using a laptop).

I would decide whether to use a standalone satnav or an app which may require data, Maps.me is on Android and works offline.
