After obtaining a few different quotes for Mrs Orion’s impending car insurance renewal, and finding they are all within a £15 spread, I did the same for the soon to be delivered MoHo.

Obviously all the brokers/insurers were provided with the same details which briefly are: Late 60’s 2 drivers, (myself as main with no direct NCB to transfer but 20+ years as named driver plus company fleet driving with no claims), in a ‘safe’ semi-rural postcode with off-road parking for new £90k value Fiat/Adria van with all the reversing, dashcam and Vanbitz gizmos fitted. Quotes that came back were all fully comp, protected NCB and more or less the same Euro cover and excesses - no breakdown or additional personal cover required.

Here’s how they stacked up:

NFU £1121
Safeguard. £802
Caravan Guard £677
AIB £506
Comfort £483
LV £352

Is there any rhyme or reason for the vast difference between the premiums, or do they just close their eyes and stick a pin in a chart?

BTW. Looking at the policy documentation of the likely candidates it appears that LV are not lacking in any area compared to the more expensive options!

The NFU Quote tells you that perhaps they don’t want to take on anymore MH business at present All Insurance is cyclical , when they want business quotes are good, when they perhaps have too much exposure they quote high .

As you are late-sixties have you tried SAGA? We're over 70 and got a good quote, guaranteed for 3 years (although that became irrelevant as the "normal" renewal was a few quid less!)

We received a shock on renewing our A Class Burstner this year. If it wasn't for the Insurance tax it would be sub £300.
That was with CCC.

I went with LV direct and I mentioned solar panels , Tow bar and bike rack , they wanted an extra £40 and put on the Policy Bodykit !

Been with LV for a few years now and haven’t found anyone to beat them and their breakdown is reasonable as well (LV Britannia)👍😊

I'm in my final of a three year fix with Saga at just under £400. OH is reluctant to drive the moho and, in view of comments elsewhere about repatriation and available drivers, I mentioned removing OH from the insurance. The amended premium would jump to just over £800. How do they justify doubling the premium for one less driver? Needless to say, I've let sleeping drivers lie.

NFU depends on the branch you contact best for Motorhomes is Chichester or Louth.
I use Chichester and have had a very good price to renew this year, only downside is Clare the lady I use has left☹️
She was spot on with sorting things out and I had to chase this to mine for my quote.

LV for us. Most competitive price for van and car. Took travel insurance with them and got 90 days. Home insurance with them now.
With regards to claims, they were very good when we needed a side window for the van in France and we are having a new screen in the car tomorrow. Excess slightly higher for glass but how many screens do you have in a year!

Well that was a pleasant surprise!

Went online to complete the insurance purchase with LV and found it had dropped by £33.49 to £319.14. Turns out that because we had recently renewed Mrs Orion’s car insurance and gone with LV, (through Confused.com for a much better deal plus a £20 Lidl voucher and free coffees from somewhere), it had linked the policy through our postcode and automatically applied a discount! Algorithms, don’tcha luv ‘em!

Don't forget its not just about price. Just comparing quotes for our soon to be new van (sub to DVLA) and found Highway (LV) the cheapest at £418 but a £650 excess and new for old to 12 months old.
Insurer on last van was Comfort and they were £505 but a £200 excess and new for old up to 36 months old or 15000 miles. CAMC were having a laugh

Just renewed mine yesterday, increase was £319 and not much I could do about it. Only 3 underwriters in the U.K. will look at my value and this was the lowest quote. Oh well it’s paid now.

Can I just ask as I am trying to get a quote through LV as we have our car insurance there for our new Adria MH, did you do it online or ring up? The phone lines are shut so I am trying to do it online but where it is not registered with DVLA yet when you go to look up vehicle it comes up with car makes although i am in the Motorhome quote section...very annoying did you have same problem? NFU cheapest for us so far at £459, how strange!

Spoke with them on the phone. They base the quote on the base vehicle Fiat Ducato. 2.2ltr diesel motorcaravan etc. - no converters details on their database apparently. Dashcam and reversing sensors earned discounts but no interest in alarms and trackers! I had no personal NCD to transfer but being named driver on wife’s insurance plus long period on fleet insurance was taken into account. They should link to your other insurance for the extra discount as well.

Brilliant thanks for that. I will give them ring in the morning. I had a quote through a broker for them which was expensive, but included breakdown cover that we do not need, so hoping I can get better price direct as we have car and pet insurance with them! We do luckily have 12 years independent no claim bonus from hubby's van insurance, but unluckily we also have an unsettled claim from when we were hit by an out of control motorcyclist!

On another note I see you have a new Adria too, did you get the dealer to fit an alarm for you or did you go to Vanbitz, or not have one fitted? Vanbitz are fully booked before we collect ours next week so am thinking might be safer to have the dealer fit one but insurance so far does not seem to worry re tracker so we can get that fitted by Vanbitz later.

Its quite overwhelming making all these decisions, waited so long for it to arrive and now its here seem to have no time at all to sort everything lol!

Good luck with it all - exciting times ahead!

Chelston in Wellington are our dealer, (excellent service so far), and as we live not far away it was a no brainer to drop it straight up to Vanbitz after taking delivery and collect it at close of business the following day. From research I’ve done into alarms and trackers I’d deffo hold out for Vanbitz to do the installation, simply for peace of mind. AFAIK most (all?) insurers will give a grace period to have the kit fitted. LV we’re okay about a delay on a dashcam as I’m waiting on some Argos vouchers to turn up before purchasing from there.

Same dealer as us so that is good to hear! Vanzone have had a cancellation on 21st so might just delay it couple of days and take it straight there. I just have to decide which alarm and tracker to go for now!!

On LV they just gave me an extremely low price, albeit it was only for 4 months as they add it to our car policy but now I am worried its too cheap lol!

Lifesure cos me £97 a year, well happy and cos its a 4.5 tonner road tax is cheap as well :)
Is that for the motor cover or just the breakdown? £97 is just not possible - or is that the monthly cost?
I spoke to Lifesure today for new Adamo and they were the cheapest with Highway (LV) at £485, £600 excess and new for old up to 12 months old, No European cover.
Going back to Comfort at £509, £200 excess, new for old up to 3 years old inc Europe

My bad :o mis read it and it has been a while since May, £97 was for the breakdown cover, total was £382

Does anyone know if your insurance differs much if you uprate from 3.500t to (I think its) 3.650t without any modification as I have paperwork for uprated to LHG ,I have read that road tax is cheaper, for whatever reason??
Thankyou

My last van I uprated to 3850 I did tell the insurers but they weren't interested.
When you first insure a Motorhome they never ask about the weight.

What was the agreed mileage? £50 extra for me for additional 3k miles and that was pro-rata for 4 months.

IIRC most of those that I contacted weren’t interested in the weight, LV certainly didn’t query it. Yes PHGV is way cheaper RFL at £165 per annum.

It was 15k miles a year.
