Hi,

We thought we'd share our cost effective solution for garage storage. After considering a number of options we purchased 2 x plastic shelving from scewfix @ cost of £18.00 each. It then took about 2.5 hours to adapt them and fit both in the garage over the rear shelf.

Hope this helps with any plans you might be thinking about for you garage.

I'm very impressed, both by the idea and by your DIY skills. I wouldn't have a clue how to fit them. I'd probably try and superglue them in place, for fear of drilling holes, and find that I had put the glue in upside down! :D

Interesting option problem I would have is that my mobility scooter wouldn't fit in with them there

At Present I use the heavy duty plastic boxes similar to the ones you see being used for delivery to Pharmacies but we are also looking at putting some small item boxes on the actual door we think they are Fiamma but have yet to do the searches

Just a little bit more information that you may find helpful.

The dimensions of the plastic shelving as purchased is Height when fully erected 1300mm x Depth 305mm x width 610mm.

We obviously reduced the height of the product by cutting the legs in between the shelves to provide usable stacking storage for certain size plastic containers. We screwed the top shelf to the wood covered garage roof and worked our way down from there.

Crikey Adam, you've used 2 of your average 3 messages per year already and you could have shouted to me I'm a Fordingbridge address.

Nice neat job too....... Griff

Yes Griff we've been inactive on the Motorhome front for a few years but now both of us are fully retired we are going for it..... Picked up our new Adria Matrix 670 SL from the Motorhome Depot Redditch 8 days ago and are having fun kitting it out for our travels. Love Fordingbridge and thank you for your kind comment. John

I did exactly the same with the same units a year ago unfortunately though the plastic shelves are deforming and cracking, it's not due to overloading but using the uprights as anchor points for bungying the bikes to them. We live and learn.

Many thanks Diabalo that's really useful information. We've secured the rear uprights between each shelf to the back garage wall with brackets which has made it pretty rigid...However following your experience we won't use the uprights as any form of anchor points and hope we get good service out of it.

Nice idea and nice execution. The garage layout is similar to my Rapido. The plastic "well" section looks the same, but I have the wooden ledge fore as well as aft of it, so potential to put shelves like yours both fore and aft. However we have an adjustable bed height so to do this I would have to decide on a bed height and leave it there. I use a number of folding plastic crates that fill the well, each with different contents, (walking boots, cables, hose pipe, tools, Cadac etc). I can rearrange them to get the bikes in ( bed at highest position). The crates are secured by a luggage net, hooked on to the 6 latching points. The folding crates do not stack, but I am considering making a "lid" from ply that sits on the rim of the well and fixed to the latches so I can both have a higher surface for more storage and sides to retain large thin things like folding chairs against the aft wall. I like your idea of the mat in the well - is that one of those non-slip mats?

Great idea....What are you using to stop all the boxs and stuff falling off?

Hi,

Sounds like you are making best use of your available space too given your perameters.

I propose to use elasticated nets over each shelve unit. I'm also thinking of standing our relaxing chairs and table in front of the spare wheel and stretching a net between the shelve units to secure them. We have two bikes to get in and that should be interesting!!!

I've put an old piece of awning mat cut to shape and secured it to the floor.

I like the shelf set up but query the proposed use of nets. Good idea in theory but in practice I've found that they become annoying as bits get caught in the nets when moving things around and then you struggle to free them from the nets particularly if a bit of a stretch. I have just used bungee cords set at the required heights and everything remains safe and sound. Easy to operate too.
cheers
Nik.

Great idea.(y)
Unfortunatly I don't think it will work for us even though we have a big garage I can't see the bikes, tables & chairs & washing machine fitting in as well.
I have some of that shelving so may have a play.

Hi

Herewith an update. Purchased 3 x luggage nets 750cm x 750cm from Halfords @ cost of £10 each though they were doing 3 for the cost of two so £20 for the three!!!

As you can see in the attached pictures they fit nicely, covering the shelving and between the spare wheel. No hassle in securing them or removing them...perfect for our requirements anyway. Let's see how we get on and I'll post again after 3 months practical experience.

I'm sorry but I fail to see why you could possibly need so much shelving and why you should need to carry so much stuff. We have a small under bed garage with a hose- ecu lead -.two chairs- bowl and brush for washing the van and little else, so consequently it is mostly empty.
All we need for months away-What are we doing wrong?

I'll tell you what you are doing wrong, you are carrying way too little. Where do you put your motorcycle and your electric bikes, this year I'm carrying a large 5 man inflatable dinghy and a small 3hp outboard motor as well. Then there are the tool boxes, step ladders, guest chairs, recliners, BBQ, outside table, 6 sided pop-up screen house, wind break, Morrocan Mat, pumps, generator, crikey the list is endless.

Couldn't possibly have a smaller van!:Eeek:

My god and you're not overloaded.
I do carry a motorcycle to the IoM and I know I'm over loaded. So I guess you're away all summer to have to take all this equipment on one holiday?
I only have two chairs - Billy no mate's see.

My god and you're not overloaded.

No just been upgraded, just shy of 6 tonne now and since selling my folding bikes I can't get the new ones in the larger garage because of the Motorbike and they're too big for the smaller garage so they have to hang off the back.

If you'd installed the units 'upside down' would you have had some edges on the shelves to help keep stuff in place?

Six tonnes! ! You carry on mate, a ton here or there's not going to make an 'appeth to the mpg. That's not a MoHo it's a truck.

Now if you had not been so tight and bought that lovely bike rack you saw in Yorkshire last year ........... And it was only £50 from memory.

Might be worth asking of the OP's vehicle has a maximum weight limit for the boot? Ours has a sticker stating 150 Kgs, not that we plan to get close to it. Biggest item in there is 2 bikes at around 35 Kgs in total.

The problem with fitting shelves and storage pouches in the boot is you put stuff in them :)

Hi,

Our garage has a weight limit of 150 kilos. We have 5 shelves each containing approximately 10kilos of product so 50 kilos plus 2 bikes@ a total weight of 30 kilos. That leaves us 70 kilos for the additional shelving fitted our plastic table, two chairs two lightweight relaxing chairs and a few oddments I think we will be just fine.

Hows that lovely daughter of yours Peter, the one you took to Twin Lakes........:hi5:
