Our van is due it's MOT at the end of this month, but for a variety of reasons it would be much better for me to get it done a bit later.

I know the trade have been lobbing Government to scrap the special 6-month Covid-related grace period, but haven't heard if the rules have changed back to normal or not? And if still in place, would they withdraw the grace peroid without any notice?

The online Government MOT checker still says our van is due on 28 June.

Anybody know the answer, or where I could find out?

Thanks!

If you check the govt websites, the last mot updates were on the 12 June so no change re stopping the extensions. It does say a few days prior to the due date will the extension to your mot due date show up. My car was about 10 days prior. (y)

As of 2 days ago it was still in place. My car was due and got extended by 6 months.
My wifes car is due in next few days so will keep a watch on that.
I know a few MOT places are open but prefer to use my regular place when they reopen (y)

The motorhome was due just after the lockdown and got extended that first week, obviously with no travels allowed its not moved but will get that MOTed as soon as they open up.

Just keep a check on the website, dates usually change 6-7 days prior to expiry date.

Thanks all for the 3 replies above!

The other thing that is frustrating is that the tax is due for renewal at the end of the month and I've been online to do it, but can't because it's due 1 July, and MOT expires 28 June!

And I heard somewhere the DVLA site were now only adding the 6-month's grace about 3 days before MOT due date.

One way or the other, I'm sure the Government is going to stop the scheme soon.

Thanks, was wandering about my M.O.T as I checked last week and it hadn’t changed .

My mot and tax were due June 1st. The mot was extended about 3 days before. The road fund licence is on direct debit, they took the money on the 15th.

Mine was due 1st June. The MoT checker showed the 6 month extension a bit longer ahead than 3 days before; about a week before the end of May as I recall. I was getting anxious because of the weekend looming before the deadline. Anyhow did the VED renewal online and it worked well.

Mine is booked into Huttons next week for a service and MOT + the 3rd recall check, on brake pipe clips. I hope Huttons are fully back up and running.

I phoned Huttons about 10 days ago to check how far ahead they were booking MOTs and servicing, both of which I'll require. And at that point they were saying around 2-3 weeks, which I thought was entirely reasonable.

But, as mentioned, I'd prefer to delay for a short while.

Hope you get on OK there.

Even if the extension shows a week before MOT is due that in not long to organise things if one is on the Continent and 1,000 miles away, if the scheme were to close suddenly.

I know there is the option to drive to a channel port, ferry crossing and direct to MOT appointment.

I would prefer to re-register in Poland but government offices are currently shut and my MOT expires in July.

Rocks and Hard Places.

Yes, it's all a bit tricky, especially, if as you've indicated, you're overseas.

Our van got stuck in Spain because we were not able to fly out and drive it home in March as a result of the lockdown and cancellation of all flights.

It was in safe indoor storage there and could have remained so for a few more months, but I decided to get it transported home, partly because of the potential MOT complications. Also, as a British-registered vehicle it would have well overstayed the 6-month limit. Then the issue of being unable to tax it without an MOT. I had visions of life getting very complicated with the Spanish authorities.

And a few other reasons we wanted it back too, not least that we might be able to use it in the UK in a few weeks time.

So bit the bullet, and it arrived home on a wagon on Monday. :giggle: (y)

UPDATE - my MOT for the van was due on 28 June and I've been monitoring the the Government website daily to see if the date would be reset and advanced 6 months.

This morning, precisely 7 days before the original due date (even though today is a Sunday) - the new MOT date of 28 December has appeared. And I can now get on and re-tax it to so we remain legal. (y)

I keep a close eye on the mechanical condition of the vehicle, it was garaged indoors throughout the winter and it has done a relatively low mileage since a very comprehensive service and MOT last June, so I'm as confident as possible it is still fully roadworthy and safe. :giggle:

HGV testing has now resumed but dvla is still granting 3 month extension to those due in July and Aug to prevent an overload of the system HGV only had 3 months at a time not 6 months like cars and MoHos
It is anticipated that when class4 and 7 testing is resumed it to will be granting further extensions in the following months to any announcement whether it be a full 6 or a shortened 3 month extension is yet to be seen and end to extension for these classes is currently under discussion.

Just seen on Sky News - MOT extensions for cars to end on 22 July!

Can’t find anything on Skynews website - but there is reference (and on gov.uk) to car practical tests (ie driving test) restarting on 22 July? Was it definitely MoT extension?

Our van is well-timed (like Bobby-gg) with expiry on 14 July, but our car expires end of July

My MOT and service will go ahead next week. The garage said I could defer until late September but as doors are opening, ferries running etc, I thought now would be better before any rush.

That is weird, I was sure I read MOT test extensions to be withdrawn from 22 July on the Sky News website.

However, I agree it's not there now. And I also can't find any alternative evidence online?

Hope I'm not totally losing the plot...

Apologies if it was mis-information. I will keep eyes and ears open. :giggle:

Easy done - I’d already requested notification of any updates to that page on the gov.uk website, and will flag up on here if they notify any changes.
