Can recommend September
We have spent some time on the Mossel the last three years
I would say the cycle paths are very good
I wouldn't spend all my time on the Mossel again ( lots of other things to see) but will have two or three days somewhere there next trip
Much quieter than most places on the Rhine

The area around Trier is a bit industrial, but the Town itself is nice. One of the nicest section we found was the bit through Luxembourg.
