Several years under the belt....
Hi all,
We are off to Morocco for a couple of months in mid Feb and I was wondering if I need to upgrade my van with a couple of bits of extra kit like:

Set of 2 Recovery boards - useful for getting out of sand traps etc.
An undertray for the engine - to prevent any stone damage.

I never want to find myself in trouble because of lack of kit but on the other hand, I dont want to take anything for no reason that adds additional weight. Im sure Im over thinking things (as usual) but interested in other folks opinions.

Thanks

A multi plus presumably? Up to you of course but I would be even less keen to connect that to Moroccan ehu. We were at Sidi Ouassay this time last year and they had a surge that actually fried someones phone that was o on charge, along with several fridges, a few chargers and various outside kitchen equipment ( very popular with the long term French)

Does it offer any protection to all the onboard electrical installation and components from over/under voltages or surges on the incoming 240v hook up though?
Apparently so! According to my installer who I checked with this morning

With the b2b and 350w solar I would imagine you wouldn’t need to plug in on EHU…🤔

Well smiffy, from what I've learnt here I think we will avoid it as much as possible!

I can only go by what Victron state on the product:

"The MultiPlus will prevent overload of a limited AC source, such as a generator or shore power connection. First, battery charging will automatically be reduced when otherwise an overload would occur. The second level will boost the output of a generator or shore side supply with power taken from the battery.

Uninterrupted AC power (UPS function)
In the event of a grid failure, or when shore or generator power is disconnected, the inverter within the Multi is automatically activated and takes over the supply to the connected loads. This happens so fast (less than 20 milliseconds) that computers and other electronic equipment will continue to operate without disruption."

I’m not interpreting that as any protection from issues coming from the AC source when on EHU, such as surge or over/under current variations. Rather the opposite, “ The MultiPlus will prevent overload of a limited AC source, such as a generator or shore power connection.”

Thats what I do, brim the gas tank and use 600w of solar to run the fridge on 12v during the sunny periods. Ext bbq point is a backup but didnt need it last year.

If you do have to plug in would recommend switching your fridge onto gas, its unlikely to be connected through your multiplus.

If you buy a small moroc gas bottle 45 D and burner for the top 45/ 50 D you can use that outside your van for boiling the kettle to save your onboard gas . A refill is only 11D or so.

Off the back of that I’ve bought a Gaslow “anywhere” adapter so I can hook up Moroccan gas bottles to my external lpg filler and we are good to go if the onboard tank runs out.
