Hello everyone, this is our first post! Very excited about our new (old) van. Can anyone recommend options for the above? We just need to use phones, possibly laptop, no gaming or heavy duty usage. We have read some very helpful advice on this forum, looking forward to reading lots more!

If you have a smartphone it can be used as a wifi hub then connect other devices to the network created.
This works well in most places but a separate mifi unit with some form of aerial will pick up signals where the smartphone won't, this would need a separate data sim.
There are several threads on this subject if you do a search.

For the last few years we have used a MiFi from TPLink which has given no problems at all since buying SIM cards from '3'. Huwei also make a MiFi.
Welcome!

Hello and welcome from another relative newbie!

I’ve just been through this process and can report that with an EE sim on my iPhone and a Smarty 3 SIM on a HUAWEI I’m having huge problems.

I’m having a Motorhome WiFi unit fitted ASAP. Adam and Sophie have explained their kit will boost and amplify the signal so a 1 bar reception will work like a 5. I’ve only had a week without consistent or good quality internet connection and can verify it makes modern life very difficult.

I too have a HUAWEI mobile WiFi router with a Smarty 4g sim (£15 pcm for 100gb) but it is all but redundant without a boosted signal. However I am in the sticks so it may be more of an issue for me.

Have you tried your EE sim in the router to see how well that works? It may just be that there is no 3 masts in the area where you are. I have no 3 signal at home but O2 and Vodafone work fine. There are only 4 mobile networks to try.

D'yer know Speve, thanks to yours and others patient tutorial replies to my post asking how to link my tablet I actually understand that reply. What's more, I get a warm techno-smug sensation :giggle:. I'll have to be cautious though as if I become even more competent I could well develop acne, or register with Faecesbook, innit. ;)

Where I am is an area where neither of my EE and 3 SIM cards get a decent signal. Gladly having two networks I can at least struggle in parallel ether universes!

Another consideration is where you plan to go. Will you spend a lot of time in remote locations or usually be close to civilisation? That will also affect the solution you choose.

Hello, We travel & stay in France & Spain quite often so paying home Wifi was not economical.
We have a Huawei dongle & Vodafone sim card. 50gb @ £22 /month. Bit expensive compared by fixed Broadband but worth it for us.
Have never had a problem with connection over the last 4 or 5 years, home or away.
Barrie.

Welcome to Fun
we use our phones as personal hot spots but this is not a great solution as for example each time we open the ipad we need to set the wifi again. Nuisance!
I wondered whether there is a portable solution for home and way? When we are at home we are not using our broadband.

I use an unlocked tp-link mifi but because we only have bursts away in the MH any sim with a monthly contract is no good for me. I usually get the 3 internet with legs 12 month which works well especially when we have our 3-4 week trip to France. However we also have an annual trip to a friend in the wilds of Scotland who doesn't have wifi :eek:or 3 reception, only o2 and vodafone. I plan to try voxi (vodafone) this time who offer a monthly plan with no contract that you can cancel at any time so I will just use it for the one month.

You may want to check the specification on this too. https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/3g-4g-router/archer-mr200/#specifications . I have been looking at various options for use with external Aerials. this one look like a goer?. Covers the 2.4 and 5ghz bands too. Might be useful for streaming.
I have never had an issue wth the wifi signal because I am usually about 2 foot away from the mifi. Any performance issue is because of the phone reception and this doesn't appear to improve that in any way.

Those of you that use Three/Smarty or any sim on the Three network can I ask how well does it perform when streaming in France, Spain, Portugal & Germany?

I am looking at getting rid of my landline and getting a 4 G router and I want to put the sim in my Mifi when we travel.
Vodafone 100GB would be great as you get the full 100GB when roaming but will a 100GB be enough at home.
Three unlimited although limited to 20GB roaming they include Go Binge in roaming now so I could use Netflix as much as I like when traveling. So if Three now works well roaming that would be the cheapest answer.

I’ve just bought the same & paired with a panoramic antenna ( same that motorhome wifi use) . However if I was to do it again I would buy the kit from them as they provide a bespoke 70mm extended fastener to secure the antenna through the insulated roof needing just a 22mm - 25mm hole . They also have a neat docking station. I am pleased with the results and get a full 4g signal whereas in the van I rarely get more than 1 bar and often only 3g. Hoping to use an amazon firestick to stream to my new xtrons dropdown tv monitor Via its built in hdmi port.

You pay an awful lot extra just for a bespoke dock when Velcro does the job and a pointing mimo antenna only has a small hole required and the provide two different length sleeves to accommodate thicker roofs.😊

Velcro = a winner!
