Lots now
Our mobile sim only contract with Vodafone comes to an end in March and I'm not happy about the restrictions and daily costs we incur in Europe.

I do have a smarty sim at £20 rolling contract for my tablet which is perfect for the uk as its unlimited yet only gives 12GB in europe, but this I will keep.
We have 2 phones with Vodafone 100Gb each on a 18 month contract.
We currently spend 5 months in the uk a year.
Could someone point us in the right direction before I start spending time online looking for the best deals.
Thank you

Mr porky - Can confirm Popit is fine. Into third month of usage whilst in Europe. You need to manually swap networks to avoid some shaping, but often disconnecting, using another network, then reconnecting solves the problem.

Will be in Spain and France for just a smidge under four months this trip so will advise all if any issues arise, but I’m sure it will be fine.

Had confirmation from Popit CIO that six months continuous roaming is fine. No charges and full 100Gb per month.

So far so good. 🤞
Have you ditched Tiekom now and using popit?

Actually no, we have a Tiekom sim powering the MoHo Wifi then we have switched both our phones over to Popit. 100Gb whilst away, 10Gb when at home… just gives us good flexibility…

Likely to be using a Starlink soon, just to avoid all this data roaming nonsense.

I too use Tiekom to power the MH router and a legacy EE in my phone 👍

Whats the problem with needing a VPN when using Tiekom
None apart from the additional cost and nplayuing the hide and seek game with the authorities. :giggle:

Just a heads up. I've had an online chat with Matt G at Popit who says that they will be launching a 150gb data sim shortly. He's very aware of the motorhoming sector and knows about the Tiekom sim deals. Looks like they will be offering a data sim product that will really cover our data hungry HD TV, tablets and phone needs in the EU!

that would be good if it wasn’t to dear because it would save going the local sim and vpn route .
Hopefully it will be sorted by mid April when we go.

I was told by a Three operator that if you let the contract run after the expiry date it just keeps going until 9ne of the parties change it. Mine ran for 2 years after the expiry date on the same terms. Three then tried to make change to another contract with less favourable terms so I went to Popit.

https://www.idmobile.co.uk/sim-only-deals do an unlimited data, text for 18-00 (monthly). no roaming charges and a fair use policy that uses averages ie that your not permanatly in EU etc .

My only concern is that its on the 3 network does anyone know what 3 is like in France /spain etc ?

For me, changed to popit, organised for a Belgium vet to supply EU pet passport.
Forced into two work arounds, just got to try and find out if I’m of Irish decent.

It works OK but as usual with Three you have to constantly manually select networks to get a decent speed, not a network I would use for roaming again.
Also idmobile limit you to 12gb roaming so pretty useless.

In I'd mobile t& c the plan you quote has a fair usage whilst roaming of 13 GB a surcharge can be applied over this, see here.

Mr porky. Gareth, I am another one for Popit, having activated the sim in the UK on 30/12/22, and travelled through France, Spain, and Portugal, coming up to month three with it. Apart from one manual network change, it has worked a treat on roaming.
As we are well out of reach of Astra 2 for our satellite dish, most evenings (when it gets cold), have been spent watching some live TV and /or catchup, or listening to digital radio.

I am not sure yet whether to suspend the card at £1.00 per month until our next trip abroad, or to cancel it altogether, as we already have O2 sims in our phones.

HTH,

Jock. :)

For the six or seven quid it will cost you over the year probably worth paying to keep on the same contract in case they change the deal on new sims.

That's a good point Lenny. The monthly renewal is on Friday, so I'll have a chat with Matt about it sometime in March, and also about the 150Gb sim cards.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Jock, the facility to suspend and or cancel your account is not yet available on their website and this is something there working on. (and their App). The introduction of the 150GB card has also been confirmed to me but as of yet no date announced by Popit.
The only benefit I can see of suspending your account for £1.00 per month is so that you can leave the sim card in your device and activate it again when you want to start a new contract period. Otherwise, one could just order anouther sim and activate it before use. They do state the two week UK usage can be before, during or after your roaming period in the E.U.

Phil, that's contrary to an online chat I had with Matt in late in December, before activating the card, but if it turns out that it isn't an available option, I'll just cancel the contract and get another sim card for September. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

we have reglomobile.fr sim 150gb for 19,85€ monthly, in a portable mifi, works great. you can purchase it on line or at Leclercq, when away or not in use you can either cancel pr reduce to 1,5€ per month to keep it active. I was reading on here yesterday that popit is excellent but have not read the detail.

I too have had mixed messages from Popit, Jock. So, tend to do all my correspondence with them via email so I have their replies in writing. Here is their email below, stating to me the bit about the two weeks usage in the UK.
I suspect many, Funsters will not have this imposed upon them but some may see an additional two week charge imposed on them after returning to the UK when only using the data sim card in the E.U. (I believe Popit monitor this website too BTW).

Hi Philip,

Thank you for your email, this sound brilliant although we do require at least 14 days of UK usage either before, after or in-between roaming. Other then that all is good and you are good to go :)

Kind Regards
Matt

hi I just had an interesting chat with Plusnet who i use for my mobile on a monthly contract and wanted more data, they doubled it to 50 gig at no cost .
i asked about their roaming policy in the EU and he said "officially its 25 gig per month but it is never enforced "!!! I queried what he said and he repeated it ...i am off to France in May so will give it a good going over with my sim in the router and wait for any notifications .

He also said there are a load of new offers coming out in April as EE are taking them under there umberella (they already use EE's network ).

I will let you know on this thread how i get on .

Good to know, perhaps everybody looking around for a new provider is making them think again.
I would hope the fact that customers are prepared to walk away is giving them a wake up call.

I told him about the huge number of motorhome users just waiting for a solution to roaming at a reasonable cost and with high data usage,
he said lets see what materializes in April when we go under EE's umberella he said there will be better deals , as i am on a 30 day contract
i can wait .
