Milage

Put it like this.. We do Benidorm in 2.75 days
That is from Calais so roughly 1150 miles
We leave Calais on the morning of Jan 15th and are booked on site on the 17th
Same every year. And no toll roads :)
What route and stop overs do you do
Thanks

Hi, Dundee -Dover then Calais - Benidorm 1900 miles usually around four days but if we see a sign for an Aire we go have a look and if we like we stop !
One time took eleven days ! But in no rush either as we are both retired !!

What route and stop overs do you do
Thanks
Just put destination in te gps, no tolls and drive. We stop where ever we happen to be.. Just finf a quiet spot or a motorway garage and plot up for the night..
If we can do it in a 30ft tag anyone can do it :-)

Maybe as much as 400miles, could be as little as 10. Usually a long drive at beginning and end of trip through northern France its not warm enough to stop.

When at work and living up at Scarborough and having 16 days off, used to leave about 1 pm on a Thursday after missus finished work and made it to Dover (320 miles with car n caravan in those days) for an overnite at a CL/CS and an early morning ferry to Calais. Had decided maximum distance was 1000 miles from Calais. So we did Salou (Spain) one year Lake Garda (twice), Pula (Croatia) and probably the longest Lake Balaton (Hungary). Would do as many miles as possible first day out then get to destination by mid day or mid afternoon the second day. Crazy really but when you at work and only have one big holiday then why not.

Nowadays with the motorhome (16 years) destinations vary and being retired time doesn't really matter that much so depending on destination, get there asap and then take time wondering about.

Have spent the last 16 years down in Spain or Portugal, and used to leave home early October but last few years due to circumstances have not been leaving home until November so at that time of year, attitude is, why pull over after 200 odd miles in middle of afternoon while its cold and miserable, so we get the mileage done and can make Benicassim from Calais with just 2 nights on the road in France, and don't use toll roads either.

So each to their own on depending on your requirements, take it as you want.

I have driven London to Val D’Isere non stop - 14 hours, and also ridden Caen to Pyrenees in one hit (7am off ferry, 3.30pm arrive) - felt good riding into heat, but return in French rush hour was a pain.
I notice that what makes a trip tiring is if you need to arrive within a certain time window, e.g to catch ferry.
But now on bike or MH we tend to do 3x2hours - 9-11, coffee, 11.30-13.30 lunch 14.30-16.30 so around 300 mile MH, a bit more bike.
I like to arrive before dark so for skiing need to be settled by 16.00 ish.

As someone who once put over 100,000miles on a company car in not much over a year!. I can recommend taking your time!. I generally have a "plan B" for unexpected stops and delays. And then aim to go no faster than the Trucks, Most are limited to 56 these days, (reckoned to be most economical), so much of the time it`s 50 and occasionally 56/7 Tops. I have favourite "Pub Stops" for my regular longer distance runs, the aim being to fetch up circa 4pm, park, chill, walk dog and have a beer (or 2) and eats.

In the USA, we used to plan the next stop between 200 and 250 miles. So say 4 to 5hrs of driving. If we needed a stopover. Walmart was favourite. or an ("Indian" run) Casino. BLM land and sometimes the "Camp-ground America Discounted sites.

I cant remember the last trip we did that wasn't deadlined.. we might get a few days here and there that are unplanned, but they are all 'leave this day to get there that day' . Travel is always flat out , fuel only stops. The few times we do have a window, I am hopeless and finding places to go , or stay.

One factor for us is that, for popular aires, we like to get there by 2pm to be sure of a place, otherwise we aim for 4pm no matter when we set off to avoid the evening traffic. Like others have said we also factor in interesting stops during the day so might not travel that far each day. I think we average around 6 hours travel each day when travelling to Spain, but a lot less when we “arrive”.

Whilst we plan ahead sometimes this is on a daily basis and tend not to book ahead so that we can follow the sun.

Our 6 hours a day normally equates to around 200 to 250 each day; we avoid tolls.
