Thinking of doing the N500 in mid May what will the midges be like .ta

Probably very small, buzzy, annoying but not too frequent in mid May (hopefully!)

Midges are starting .... especially dawn and dusk in damp still conditions. Better than in July/August ... take midge net hat and smidge spray and enjoy.

Stopped at Ettrickbridge many times.

We went North on May Day Monday last year, did the NC500 anti clockwise in the following two and a half weeks returning to the East coast in the last two days. In that time we didn't see a midge!!

Perhaps the luck of the draw but that's how it was.

The midge season usually starts in earnest about mid may.
As others have said there are no hard & fast rules but, the males usually hatch before the females & they can't bite.

I think as long as you don't catch the few days of the main hatchings in June and usally the second sometime in July they are manageable

We love the highlands and over recent years always do a three week tour in May. Maybe we have been lucky but they we have never had a problem with midges. June, July and August tend to be the months to avoid.

Everyone will have their own experiences; mine on the West Coast in May / Early June have been mixed i.e. some good some bad. I just went pepared with head net, sprays, long sleeves and no shorts. Try it, you will be fine

We've found that any sort of a breeze deters them (but not guaranteed). They like still warm damp conditions - if you can avoid that you'll be okay.
Avon Skin-So-Soft works for us as a deterrent and can often be found in campsite shops. Others will have their own solutions.
