Mice!

Been to storage today, found evidence a mouse has been in (a few droppings, 1 on dash, 1 on floor and 2 or 3 in kitchen drawers)

I think it’s not found anything worth staying for and moved on, no evidence to suggest otherwise.

We always remove all food, drinks and loose soft furnishings over winter so I’m hoping we’ve not got an ongoing issue but what do I do now apart from cleaning and disinfecting areas with droppings present?

Evidence of intrusion by a rodent cannot be discounted, but to lay blame at the storage facility that it is their fault for such an incursion is I think, stretching a point.
Unless of course, within their terms and conditions they either state that it is the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner to take and make such precautions OR they offer and state that they have in place a facility that regularly checks and has bait stations in place to prevent such incursions.
At the end of the day, it is classed as an act of vermin infestation by a wild animal, and as such is often difficult to insure against, personally.

I'm sure a good lawyer would sort it.

Bird shit on the roof damaging the paint ?
Birds nest in the engine bay ?
Rabbit nest above the exhaust pipe ?
Leaking roof due to the angle you are parked ?
Slow puncture caused by a nail you picked up somewhere ?
Mysteriously cracked windscreen?

I don't think even an Ambulance Chaser would take your money.

our storage unit set traps and were told they had to be removed ( bloody do gooders),,,, as previously stated.... I spray heavily around tyres with Fox pee ( bought on e-bay ) touch wood... no evidence since.

I remember once being told that to deter foxes into our garden I should personally place human urine around said area.
This chap was a gamekeeper.
So, duty called one summer evening and I proceeded to carry out such an exercise in complete oblivion to anything.
Duly told said gamekeeper of my efforts and I was most pleased with myself.
Said gamekeeper was most amused as he actually meant for me to collect such liquid in a spray type bottle and then distribute said liquid in that way around the paths that the foxes took and not go peeing around the garden.
Next door neighbours found it quite funny though as we are overlooked on certain bits of the garden and I got a ' thumbs up' from one of our neighbours wives the next few days.
Never got asked to go round to her garden though to deter the Foxes, which is a pity, as she was rather nice.

That is the question. If you are paying for the storage, the company is responsible.

You cannot be serious.


I can guarantee you would have - 100% risk of success. So on top of the damage to your van bill you have you'd also have court fees.


What do you expect the storage facility to do? Employ a battalion of rats with machine guns to patrol the storage facility?


I had feckin mice/hamsters come in my van whilst I and 4 dogs were living in it.

That's how determined they are and fearless

Checked today, all seems clear and nothing nesting under the bonnet. Will check again in a couple of days

Storage site is also adding extra bait traps in the area.

Cannot work out if mice are attracted to the stuff in the mouse traps or not?

They are attracted to sealed bags of dry food, so I would say a dollope of peanut butter is a sure fire attraction..
Therefore IMO traps should only be used once you know you have an issue and removed once caught.. and not used as a 'just incase' deterant !

I disagree, traps should always be present when you know they will likely be around. Once they chew your cables, we are talking an awful lot of money to repair the damage.

Possibly.. depending on placement....
Outside surrounding van if you think you have issue to get them before showing an interest in van yes.... but not in van unless the critters are already in... if they are not already in then all you will be doing is inviting them in with luvly jubbly food smells..

Yes, absolutely, the idea is to have the traps set outside the van.

You should have mice traps all the time in motorhome during winter if you’re not using the van, only matter of time before they chew through a wire that’s got something to with ecu etc .
Go to tool station they sell all plastic ones easy to set , and 100% reliable to catch .
I’m all for nature but not in my van or car .
