Mice in my motorhome

I was worried that mice had nested in the engine bay when I saw some damage to the soundproofing insulation above the shock absorbers.

Then I remembered a strange occurrence, when I saw insulation (the rock wool type stuff but yellow) on the roof tiles of the extension. I wondered how it got there -- wind, animal?

Then I put two and two together: birds had been raiding the engine bay of insulation material for their nests. This was confirmed by closer inspection of the engine bay that showed traces of bird lime (small species) near to where the insulation had been nicked from.

We have been fitting a electronic devise to vehicles that live in Clumber park national trust in Nottinghamshire that works it omits ultrasonic sound and has a series of flashing led lights it uses nothing to power it but is very effective I will post the supplier name tomorrow it’s easy to fit and very small and compact they are available on amazon and just a note mice are very attracted by chocolate as I found out to my cost when I left Xmas presents in the hold of my aircraft I have fitted one of these devises and removed the presents and no more mice

Got all air vents covered in stainless steel mesh a few of days ago and checked all under van for points of entry .sealed some very small gaps around pipes etc.
It has been clear for a few days so fingers crossed they were getting in the air vents.
While I was in mouse mode I thought I would look at my other vehicles, I put a good amount of peppermint oil under bonnet of both of them as there was evidence of mice chewing sound deadening felt under bonnet of my Partner van, as a belt and braces I put a Big Cheese mouse trap under bonnet as well.
This morning I went to check and as I was lifting the Partners bonnet I could smell the strong peppermint, when open there was a mouse in the trap, so I don't think the peppermint oil works, but it does smell nice

We keep our motorhome on a local farm when we are not using it and, to keep all the little beasties away, we just hook up an electronic deterrent under the bonnet, pointing down and back, to flood the underneath with repellent ‘silent’ noise. Never had any issues with mice since, but we did have issues before!

This is the type of device:

I attached crocodile clips to the wires, and use the jump start terminal under the bonnet, and a convenient earth, and just hang it down, pointing backwards to flood under the motorhome with the noise. It’s worked for the past four years!!!

Just remember to take it back inside before you moved the motorhome!!!

Checked again this morning the Partner van still stunk of peppermint oil , and another mouse caught in trap,
another vote for traps against peppermint oil

I have now found out where they were getting in and it is where the hose for emptying the clean water tank leaves the van under the benchseat. They have chewed all the rubber seal away. I have bought some wire wool this afternoon and will use it to plug the gaps. Since Monday there has been no evidence of further droppings so I suspect the mice got in while my van was at Station Garage being serviced and MOT'd. I have found cobnut shells and there are none near my bungalow. So fingers crossed I will be OK now and can get ready for the New Year Meet at Shrewsbury.
