Hi All

Daft question: - should the exhaust exit be past the bodywork or is it acceptable to finish under the chassis?

Just had a new one fitted and it doesn’t pass the body work (the previous one did). Hence the question

TIA

Darren

There are no rules that say it should exit past the bodywork, ours and every other Iveco Daily chassis exits slap bang in the middle pointing down at the road, how far from it's previous position is yours now?

you can have problems if the tail pipe is too short

My tail pipe is hidden a couple of inches back from the edge of the bodywork. Been like that 7 years. No problems . BUT it does leave black soot deposit over a few inches of the side panel - easily cleaned off..

Just thought I would check, the last one had a chrome pipe extension which passed the bodywork. It just looks odd not seeing the exhaust (if you know what I mean) 😎
Thanks for the quick replies

Hi It should fail the mot as it is a failure for a motorhome

Sorry should refrase that if its pointing out the side near the edge or out the rear but like most of comercial vans and my renault master in the middle pointing down is not accepted for a motorhome mot and therefor you should divert it .Unless there is the bulkhead still fitted to the cab area which they arent usually in a motorhome

When I purchased a new exhaust for our Flair on the daily chassis the parts guy said that it should have extensions rather than just exit in the middle of the chassis as it was a motorhome, I asked a MOT tester and he said it was OK, every Concorde, PhoeniX, MORELO and N+B that is built on the IVECO Daily chassis has the exhaust exiting in the standard position in the middle of the chassis and I have not heard of one of these vans failing a MOT.

I thought I would have a quick read of "construction and use regulations" under emissions I find,

Closets etc

62.—(1) No wheeled vehicle first used after 15th January 1931 shall be equipped with any closet or urinal which can discharge directly on to a road.

(2) Every tank into which a closet or urinal with which a vehicle is equipped empties, and every closet or urinal which does not empty into a tank, shall contain chemicals which are non-inflammable and non-irritant and provide an efficient germicide.

Isn't it amazing how any thread can quickly become a toilet thread :giggle:

PS I found nothing about exhaust position;)

I think the old rule was, if it didn't extend passed the bodywork, it had to point downwards slightly? Not sure what the new rules (if there are any) say?

On Carthago's the exhaust exits under the centre of the chassis so obviously not a problem.
I would guess being lhd and made abroad it doesnt comply with british regulation and yes its no problem untill you meet the garage i used. LOL But it would be interesting to actually know if he is correct ,i shall ask him where it is in his manual

I would have thought that because it’s a habitational vehicle, then the exhaust wouldn't be allowed to exit directly below the habitation area, in order to avoid fumes from rising and entering that area, but you live and learn.

Do motorhomes still have all those gas drop holes that our old caravan had, if yes then I could understand not having the exhaust underneath, our van is totally sealed against anything entering from below so can not see a problem.

Mine certainly does, I though it a legal requirement for any vehicle that uses gas.

We certainly have drops into the underfloor area but after that I am not aware of any drops in the final lower floor to road level

OK, found one in the electric locker(y) the caravan had them all over the place though.
