What would be members suggestions for a breakdown company ?

My breakdown cover is part of my MH insurance, AXA Assist, but I have just noticed in the policy documents that vehicles are only covered up to 3m high and my MH is 3.1m high.
I have just spoken to AXA Assist and they couldn"t tell me whether I am actually covered or not so I am wondering if there is/are breakdown companies members use that will cover 3.1m high vehicles as I don"t want to find that actually I am not covered ?
The camping and caravanning Club do the Arrival breakdown cover there’s no length or height restrictions, but I believe it’s 7.5t max .
I am not sure if you can only have the breakdown cover if you have your insurance with them. But if if your axa assist states 3m high well it means your not covered really, but I can’t see them bringing out a tape measure.

It turns out the AXA Assist only covers MH"s up to 1.95m high.
The 3m height they refer to is the max height of anything you are towing.
I had this confirmed by my insurers Principal this afternoon.
They have offered to refund me the £70 the AXA Assist cost and have suggested I take out breakdown cover with ERS Breakdown for £101 who they assure me will cover my MH but I have never heard of ERS.

Are you with Nationwide and have their Breakdown cover by any chance, not available anymore to new members?
Should add we were recovered using Nationwide from Beverly to Sutton Coldfield having had clutch failure. Our "beast" is tall at 3.19 metres, 6 long, 2.3 wide but no problem. And we had a rental car as they could not transport three of us.

Great question.
I can't get breakdown insurance for a large vehicle in ROI where I live. I can't access any breakdown insurance at all for a vehicle over 8m or 7 tons..
As far as I know, products offered by UK based companies, all those above, are not available to non-UK registered vehicles.
My problem is although the motorhome is UK registered and insured (though that costs near £1000) and used in the UK & EU (just like one of you might use yours), I'm Australian an citizen & resident and the vast majority of insurers and breakdown covers don't want a bar of anyone not resident.

So far the possible ones are:

This is the German equivalent of the RAC (from what I can gather). Expensive, but also includes travel insurance on the better coverage. Just not sure if it'd work as it refers to getting you back to Germany in case of trouble. The second best cover refers to 'Germany & Europe'. I'm not sure if they consider the UK part of Europe or 'worldwide'. All the T&C's are in German - quite laborious reading them via Google Translate.

Broken Link Removed
possible (no mention of having to be resident in the pdf)

£142 for EU cover. Does have a monthly premium - not sure if you're obliged to keep the cover for 12 months (guessing it's that) or if you could only pay for the months you need it.

You must have a UK address to get insurance, I would have thought, so why not use that to join RAC Arrival or open a Bank account that has this facility, Nationwide Flex-Plus for example.

How do they know you have a Oz driving licence? I have never been asked for my licence details? Good Luck!

You need a UK address for the vehicle registration, but you don't need to live there. It can even be from a mail forwarding web site. That's the easy bit (the V5C).

You need to be a permanent UK resident for almost all insurers (and most likely to get a UK bank account, though there are online ways to get a bank account), though there are a very few that will make an exception - at a price. My first year of insurance in 2019 cost £1050. This year I have a quote of (a bargain) £830.

Just checking RAC Arrival now.

It's not about the driving licence, it's about residency.

Blimey! £586 to £938 for 90 days single trip EU breakdown cover! All I told them was the vehicle (Fiat Ducato 2002 as they didn't recognise the number plate).

I wonder if the age of the vehicle has anything to due with the high charge of cover? I have an 1989 VW, as well as the Murvi, and a lot of companies will not give it breakdown cover abroad?

Possibly they interpreted it as a commercial vehicle?

I think it's more about the age of the vehicle. The computer states, age = breakdown, so they do not really want the risk unless one is willing to pay a high price?

Add to that that your a 'Foreigner' and the risk goes up even more?

There can't be many motorhomes 1.95m or less in height, only some PVC.

Exactly.
My Transit Connect work van is 1.9m high not including the roof rack.
I have no idea what vehicles the breakdown cover was supposed to cover but it certainly wasn't MH's even though the policy was clearly titled motorhome breakdown cover.

Trying to get breakdown cover for hols in France in July but as Hymer is over 17 years old I have to provide evidence that it is roadworthy and has been serviced regularly. Unfortunately last time it was serviced was in 2016. Luckily they said they would accept it if I gave it a full service before leaving. They also want to see photos of all repairs that have been done since I bought it.

Well on the recommendation of my insurers I've taken out breakdown cover with ERS who my insurers assure me have no size limits.
UK cover, no EU cover, ,£101.
I'll be reading the policy documents once I get them just to be sure I am covered after the AXA Assist saga.

Hopefully they gave that recommendation in writing which your going to keep with your breakdown service documents? :giggle:

Me, untrusting and cynical of insurance companies, never!

Worth a double check if you're over 3500kg. They won't cover a van but are silent on motorhomes?
