Our current van came with an air-con. At the time we thought we would never have specced it, but actually it is invaluable in hot countries where we can then leave the dog in the van and go out for the evening. However we do need to be on hook-up to do that.

Our new van will have a great deal more leisure battery capability, and can run the air-con we're thinking of putting in - but not for long, I imagine.

Would a Max fan be enough to keep the van cool for the dog when the outside temperature is in the 30s? I think we could assume no direct sun. If so, we could probably run it quite safely from DC power.

Surely when the temperature is at it's worst, probably when you might want to be sans Flynn, the sun will be banging in the amps replacing some of what the aircon will be taking.
It is a question of balance, no?

We'd never leave him alone in the van during the day - too risky if the power goes, even on hook-up. Someone pulled the cord on us on one trip - luckily the weather turned bad so it wasn't an issue.

What usually happens is that we want to mooch into town late afternoon, do one single tourist visit where Flynn is banned, and then have a drink and dinner. That means the air-con just has to get us through the last few hours of the sun, and as we know it's setting we feel safe.

I think the air-con may be the way to go for the dog - it's harder to get the air flow for a fan when the van is being left - can't open a door or window. Then the fans may be enough for us in the PF years (don't want to think about that).
