Hi all, like many people I am a complete novice to motorhomes but need some advice, we have bought a 2005 fiat Ducato 18JTD XLWB. I am struggling with the max payload we are allowed, I have a C1 license up to 7.5 ton. Attached is a couple of photos, one the manual and the other the plate in the engine, any advice would be appreciate.

I had a Winnebago which had no weights on the V5 at all. I sent a photo of the plate and get them to update the records. Saved me 100 quid a year, as it was previously PLG despite being 5 tonnes (well, 4,994kg...) Took me ages to find the towing limit. Had to research old 1978 manuals, as it wasn't even on the plate. Turned out to have a poor limit, being an old Chevy P30 base. I was surprised to find it come back with the correct numbers on. I'd assumed they'd take the lb weight and just writing it down as kg!

That is the Fiat plate you need to find the converters plate as the last plate takes precedence.
The part you have highlighted in the manual is showing the max if it has been uprated, that's why you need to find the plate.
Converters plates can be anywhere, under the bonnet, inside driver step well, on the sill near the rear axle are favorite places.
Also what does it say in your V5?

As its 3850kg you usually have air assisters on the back which means you should be able to upgrade to 4000kg to give you more to play with

My vehicle has been uprated to 3800 kg, but although the new revenue weight is shown correctly on the V5, the "max permissible mass" has not been changed from 3500 kg. What do the UK police work off? (And in other countries? Presumably the foreign police would have no access to DVLA data, so would go off the weight plate?)

That is a common mistake that the muppets at the DVLA make. You should make a complaint and insist they issue a new V5 with the correct information on.

Most police rely upon the info on the plate attached to the motorhome rather than the V5. But you never know when abroad. Government advice is that you should take the V5 when abroad to "prove" ownership. I know the V5 does not do that but most other countries do not have the concept of a "registered keeper" rather than an owner. So show it to an officious one and there is a feint chance that they will understand it well enough to compare the figure with that on the plate.

A word of warning to those who take a chance and drive overweight.
Suffolk Police now have a team of traffic officers who frequently check weights on vehicles. They carry scales in their vehicles and are nicking a lot of unsafe and overweight vehicles.
Not seen motorhomes pulled so far, it’s all been commercials, but they are out there and keeping an eye on things. I assume other forces will be doing the same.

They'd use the MPM. Revenue weight would mean nothing to them.I'm sure that the letter/number combinations are EU standards now with countries using what they need. I.e. F1 is MPM or PMA here whereas we also have an F2 for tare weight or unladen weight.

No mention of VIN numbers the number on the Swift plate will be the Swift serial number.

a fascinating fact that seems to be overlooked by many.... if the train weight (including trailer) is not present, you can not fit a towbar or tow anything at all

Thanks for that. That seems right. I'm sending the V5 back to Swansea to be amended.

I hope you don't need your V5 for 6 months they take 4 months to correct MAM in normal times.
Well, I wasn't planning to go abroad without it, so I don't have any choice really. They issued the new V5 after I bought the van within a few days. I suppose they need longer for such a massively technical operation.

Some may find the conversation I've just had (within the last couple of hours) on the phone with the DVLA interesting. I too have been concerned about the weight info returned on my new V5C yesterday.
I bought a Bürstner at the end of last month. The dealer got SV Tech to add rear airbags and up-plate from 3500Kg to 3850Kg (the previous owner had had it down-plated from 3650 Kg to 3500KG). Fortunately the plate arrived and was applied to the vehicle before I disappeared to France for 2 weeks (no V5C though - still on the DVLA production line!).
My new V5C states [Y] Revenue weight correctly at 3850Kg GROSS. But F.1: Max. permissible mass (exc. Motorcycles) states 3650Kg. Surely [Y] and F.1 should be the same? Confused I phoned DVLA.
After 40 mins on hold with 2 different officials, I have been told that the lower permissible mass figure of 3650Kg is left on the V5C as the original permissible mass as stated by the manufacturer at the time of production, and the Revenue weight of 3850Kg is the important weight to worry about if being checked by the Police etc. (The new plate stuck on the vehicle chassis also shows GVM at 3850Kg)
Apparently if a Registered Keeper is keen to get the two figures to match, there is a mechanism for doing so "involving a lot more paperwork and a fee", but it is "unnecessary".
I must admit I still find the whole issue rather nebulous!

Do they not understand that motorhomes are driven in the rest of Europe. You may well have a lot of trouble convincing a Gendarme or other equivalent that permissible mass does not mean what the words clearly say.

I had this issue. I simply wrote to them asking for the two figures to be the same. I sent the SVTech documentation showing the change. DVLA changed it as requested. No hassle, no fee.

So why have they fed me something different after 40 minutes on the phone?! Having read through some of the posts in this thread, and others elsewhere, we seem to have the totally crazy situation where the DVLA is feeding us all different information. Chaos.

Yup. Crazy. All I know is what I experienced. Bored idiots winding you up? New rules? Incompetence? Who knows.
