Major AI breakthrough.

Perhaps it's like driverless cars. Some say they are no good unless 100% safe in every situation the reality is that no human driver is (although some think they are!). For a computer replacing a task previously done by a person if they are more accurate and reliable than the average of the humans previously doing that task it's an improvement. If as I suspect they are able to do a task way better than the average it's a big improvement.
The question then is who does the improvement benefit. If it is a general benefit for humanity then it has value. If it benefits a few at a cost to many it is far harder to justify.

But does that mean we employ lots of people just in case? It's like when we get severe disruption due to snow do we spend enough on equipment and people who are in reserve just in case? If we did that for every eventuality could our economy cope?
I think it's the case that if we are going forwards as a country we need to move with the times it's been the same throughout the whole of the industrial revolution particularly with the rise of CNC manufacturing

No, but we take out vehicle insurance and, hopefully, rarely use it. Is this a waste of money and people's time also.

It's a bit like the, only way of paying is by phone carparks where there is NO phone signal!
There has to be a gradual transition where people know what is happening. Not a rush all in the name of 'progress'.

During the 60's they pulled down some wonderful buildings and replaced them with ugly and crime ridden blocks, all in the name of progress! 😡

From what I understand so far, it could be a liability in an autonomous car. Decisions at a lower level could be that - the balance of probability is that there is not any traffic approaching this junction so I can pull out without stopping.

You're right, it does sound like some humans
It's actually probably a lot easier to instruct a driverless car to stop at every junction and check it's clear and obey speed limits than a human. I think with a lot of things in life and technology in particular we tend to look for the negatives in new things without accepting the negatives in the way things are already done. If you look back now how many of the ways things were done in the past were really better and more efficient than the way they are done now unless looking through some very rosy tinted spectacles! Remember hand written pass books for savings accounts, cheques, cars with a manual choke, drum brakes, typists etc

I've used the AI function on Ebay for listing stuff, but you have to check the carp it's produced in it's normally flowery verbiage as it just parrot fashion replicates from other stuff available, faults as well. So if you're not careful your add just ends up as more fodder for it's inaccuracies.
Mike.
As I was taught in the very early days of computing... GIGO

But those wonderful buildings were largely in need of repair and very difficult to insulate. Yes the buildings that replaced them were ugly and crime ridden but was the crime the result of the blocks or a change to a more materialistic society.

The ' very rosy tinted spectacles' can be used to see in BOTH directions! 🤔

The Government spends £illions repairing poorly insulated old buildings that no-one lives in all the time, eg Palaces & Government Buildings, why can't they spend some of that money on lesser homes if you want value for money?

As for your last question, people above my paygrade announced years ago before they pulled them down, that the building contributed to the increase in crime.

I think the car one is not a particularly good comparison but I actually prefer a car with a manual choke and typists could be fun

It depends whether there are real negatives which spur developments or whether something is developed simply because it gives an advantage to the developer whilst introducing new negatives for others.

OK it works but More Chinese spyware and its also censored by the PRC so it gives flase results , Ask it about Tiannamin Square massacre or Uiygers slave labour camps ,, Hmmm

How about living in an era where people live longer a longish retirement being the norm a lot more having the means to run a motorhome etc?

...and you're so certain that the "Western" versions don't data mine, nor give 'curated' results

I was threatened with being thrown off my BAC apprenticeship after I was caught socialising in the typists' training school in my lunch hour!

But, you can download and install your own version which runs without an internet connection. This gives uncensored answers and doesn't send any data home.

The fact that this has been provided as open-source software makes a mockery of a lot of the reporting.

AI ? a few months ago it was said to be a thread to humanity.

Now our numpty politicians tell us it's going to be our saviour

Who's correct ?

And Rachel from Complaints was over in Beijing to announce investment of £600m from China. Maybe this is another Chinese spyware we're letting loose?

My friend asked his Google Gemini the exact same question as I asked my chat GPT.

And got totally different answers.

Quite possibly.
I'm just confused as to how AI's gone from being a threat to our way of life to our route to salvation in 6 months 🤷‍♂️

I thought the spyware, was Rachel? 🤔

It was on the Road to Damascus if my memory serves me right! 😄

PS. For the real answer, see above post! 😱

Absolutely the first couple of lines of clearly AI generated waffle...look at the last line if still Ai..I'm gone...amazed eBay launched such clearly defective systems

IF the rumours are true and AI computers can teach other AI computers (and vice versa) how can they test it except by asking another computer? 😱
Basically they don't test properly.
In order to do so you need to know all the accurate values of the input data and the expected valid results. Too many companies simply let their systems loose for a panel of customers to use for a while (which means they don't know all the accurate values of the input data) and will simply replace the panel with the other machine.
They may call it Beta Testing but that is not an accurate description.

Google have repeatedly tried to get me to agree to use Gemini...I read as far as the bit that said it may give incorrect or inaccurate answers,No thanks.Who would have bought a calculator in the 70's that may have given wrong answers

That would be the main description of the internet "May give incorrect answers" !
