M6 Toll....worth it?

Not much difference in distance.
Think the toll route is half a mile longer, but a smoother ride.

Depends where you are starting/finishing.

I actually prefer avoiding M6 and M6 Toll when going N/bound by going up M42 across to Lichfield, A38 then to Ashbourne-Leek-Macclesfield to M6.

A very pretty route.

We used to use the M6 toll when travelling south from Cumbria to Dover/Folkestone as at 1/2 price from C&MC it was worth it to have 1/2 hour of less frantic driving off the M6. But we got fed up of the tailbacks all the way up the M6 from Brum to Manchester so we now use M6 to Penrith, A66 to Scotch Corner and then M1 all the way to M25.
Midway point for us is around jct. 29A so overnight at Poolsbrooke C&MC site..

Barry

M1 a bit better than the M6 but on the rare occasion I go north these days I prefer the A1.

Well it looks like it going to be M25, M1,to Scotch Corner A66 to Penrith,M6 to Carslile , stop for fuel at Asda north Carlisle then M6 to M74 over the border at Gretna then onto Dumfries and beyond to the highlands after Ayrshire (family visit)
Makes me smile as that was the only main route to Scotland before The M6 was built, used to sit in the back of my dads cars with a hand held radio,Austin A40, Austin 1100,then a 1300GT, then an Austin Maxi trying to keep a signal for Radio 1, and feeling car sick:sick:, haven't done the route for 40 years plus, so its progress in reverse eh?
Going through the night, leave here down south about 2AM.
Hope no one ties cans on the back, as its our honeymoon(y)
Cheers everyone.

Cannock / Stafford motorhomer here...
I rarely use the toll.
If you use google maps, as you get closer to the toll, look at the alternative options.
Most times, it will list the non toll alternative as, say 10 mins or 30 mins longer.
I then decide if the delay is worth the toll - very often it isn't.

There is a mobility exemption pass you can get, which means you won't need to pay toll.

I always go up the A5 not the M1/6 and the signs KEEP trying to force you onto the Toll motorway.

Well my advice, if you want to avoid congestion, is travel overnight.
Had to do this, Hull to Plymouth because of someone not realising catching a ferry at 9.30 meant you shouldn't book to go to a sportsman's dinner the night before. I slept while he was there, then he slept while I drove down. Was a revelation, would do it by choice every time. Have used the M6toll twice once by accident, and once to meet up with someone when I was coming from Chorley and time was an issue. Total waste of time and money.

I suppose it depends where you are starting from:D

I would use M1 north and “cross” via the A50 Derby to miss all the Staffordshire M6 roadworks

We used it recently, trouble free in terms of traffic and ease of bypassing M6/M5 junction.
BUT
We had planned a lunchtime break at the services which were packed. The Moho/caravan parking section was full of cars or commercials and there was no suitable parking space even for our short van. We ended up buying coffe and sandwiches in the garage and driving on. A little peeving!
(Yes I’ve just realised Little Peeving sounds like a village in the North Cotswolds)

Yes, those services are weird. I always use the toll road, traffic always very light and I've never seen a lorry. so where do all the folks come from who end up at those services?

Only been tempted ( time issues ) twice.
Both times the signs read toll clear
The first time miles of road works ( so a blatant and obvious lie )
Second time solid jam which we sat in for an hour caused by an accident ( arguably unexpected but we sat a good three miles back from where the accident happened so probably just another blatant lie )
I will never be tempted again no matter what

You won't find a supermarket advertising that it's food is dodgy ........ with the exception of Morrisons Wonky veg:whistle:

Not sure why you'd want to go up the M6 to Scotland - it's full of roadworks.
M11 - A14 - A1 - A66 - M6 - M74

Roll on May and we won't have to do the journey anymore. Will be living full time in Scotland (y)

I would either go M1 A50 M6 or M1 A46 A1. We went on the M6 last weekend to Manchester airport a lot of roadworks (The M1 was shut at 2 in the morning!!!!!)

Is the A14 finished yet? Last time we went down that way, last year, the main A14 was horrendous and the obvious (on the map) alternative (A1198 via Papworth) was nose to tail too.

No it isn’t and at peak time is slow going. Not due for completion till 2020. Everyone seems to have discovered our short cut, via Papworth, so we just time our journeys better and avoid the peak times. We go North via the A1 these days

Always used to go to Aberdeenshire, then more recently (20 years ago!), around Selkirk and Jedburgh and for me, was always M1, M18, A1, A68, so may go for the same except for the A66 across to Penrith....exactly the same distance for us and don't have to even consider the toll!

Thanks all

Dont know about you guys but we have been deferring our trip up to Scotland because of the weather. Flooded roads in D&G, Heavy snow in the Western Highlands.
Better weather prospect in coming days for the Eastern Side, Edinburgh especially, could see 14 degrees and some sunny intervals
Or is all propaganda, we will probably brave it out and go up in the next couple of days.
As for Jedburgh, looks nice, its a got a CCC site, but I was hoping to find a car park for an overnight, any recommendations ?
Thanks
