Was rushing home early from a weekend away due to a family emergency, and kept just accepting the stream of "faster route" suggestions from the satnav.

Unfortunately it took us momentarily on the M6 toll road (for about 5 miles) and we had to pay - FIFTEEN QUID!!!!!!!!!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..............

In an emeregency to get somewhere quickly I'd pay it

And I'm a tight wad

I remember when the toll first came about, 2004/5 I was a bit stressed driving my first big 101 inch wide RV which weighed about 11 tons. I was lost and found myself at the toll booth, I didn't even want to go that way! I think it was almost a tenner back then, mad at my self and cursing, I paid, I then got off it as soon as I could to try and find my way home. Still lost 15 mins later I found myself back at the same toll booth with someone holding their hand out for another tenner! :swear::swear2: Never been on it since,

We haven't been on The M6 toll since the CMC discount was removed, since then we haven't even been members of The CMC, so we will have to endure the bumpy elevated section past Birmingham if we did.

We now use "the old route" to visit family or tour Scotland A1/M1 to Scotch Corner, then nip across the A66 to Penrith onto The M6, then cheap fuel stop, stock up with square sausage/black pudding etc at Asda North Carlisle, then on to Ayrshire.(y)

When we travel the length of England to get to the channel ports the toll road is very welcome. It’s relatively traffic free and the surface is good too. The service station is not as good as in the past but still ok for a quick lunch stop. Wouldn’t like to rely on them for a meal though.

As a lad from Ayr itself, I was using that route at 18 years of age, whilst training at RAF Catterick and thumbing a lift back and forth at weekends. ;) It's still one of my favourite routes. ;)

We too have not used the M6 Toll since the CAMC did away with the discount, and also, are no longer members either.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I live at the western end of the M54 and often travel south but have never used the toll road I'm too mean!!

E & NE I use the M54, A460 & A5.

S & SE I use the M54 & M6 bumps and all. God knows what will happen when the powers that be decide to repair the M6 between J9 & J7 but it will have to happen quickly if we get a good few days of frost!! The joints in the elevated section are falling apart.

They are putting ANPR on it currently, I have been told it will be able to charge a small fee for just one junction that way.

If the M6 isn’t congested it’s a waste of money, on bad days it’s a bargain!

The last 2 times I’ve used it I have had delays.
So two trips costing £15 a go and it would have been quicker to use the M6.

I went on it for the first time last month in my -3.5 ton 'motor caravan' registered van.
Cannot remember how much it was but I didn't think, although expensive, it was that expensive? (it hasn't shown up on my CC bill yet?)
Will the motor caravan make any difference? 🤔

Always used to use the toll when I was a paid employee on travel expenses. For years after I was too mean to use it, but decided life was too short and the M6 usually too horrible. So it’s the toll for us now.

When I went on it in August in my 3.5 ton max Motorhome it was £12.30.

3 weeks ago we went from SE London to Fort William in Scotland with 7 minibuses, all fully loaded.
All 7 vans are limited to 60mph
Each van was towing a 7m canoe trailer with 6-8 canoes
All vans left at the same time (7am on a Saturday)

Vans A, B, C & D used the M1/M6 route via Birmingham/Glasgow, avoiding the toll.
Van E used the M1/M6 route via Birmingham/Glasgow and used the toll.
Van F went via the M40/M6 via Birmingham/Glasgow and avoided the toll.
Van G went via the M11/A1/A84 via Newcastle/Edinburgh/Sterling avoiding the toll.

In 7th position was the van E, that went via the Toll.
In 6th, 5th 4th and 2nd were van A B & C that went via the M1/M6 and not the toll
In 3rd position was van F that went via the M40
In first position, and one hour faster that the next arrival was van G that went via the M11/A1 and Edinburgh.

Whilst I think that in a car, or a motorhome capable of happily cruising up the hills at 70mph the results would have been notably different.
However for those in the older, slower, heavier, larger motorhomes, especially if towing, then the A1 route up the east side of the country appears still to be the best.

The M6 was always a bargain when I worked east of Walsall and travelled back to Telford, any delay resulted in being paid more overtime!

What gets me is that the signage only states that the m6 toll is free and not the state of the m6

I try to check on Google maps as the alternative route can be quicker

Try turning off at Junction 12 fro the M6 an dfoolow the old A5 through Cannock then on towards Lichfieldthen follow the A38 signed Birmingham then the route towards the M42/M40 joining near Minworth, longer in time but avoids the toll
