A quick search returns little information here on stoping options in Lyon.

Does anyone have any experience with the city and suggestions for a few nights?

Aviod Lyon like the plauge, be very careful where you park not safe city. Only ever had problems twice in France in over 30 years, car broken into in Lyon and just outside Lyon in a supermarket car park car door opened and laptop snatched from wifes hands, not a place I would ever go back to.

Have been twice. Stayed at Camping Indigo using ACSI. Bus from the site into the city and used one of the cyclo taxi things. Visited the food market and generally wandered about. No problems. 2015

Also used Indigo its the best option you can buy your travel card from reception dirt cheap great city.

Does the bus take you into the centre?

Bus drops you at the underground station then hop on to centre all on the same ticket you can even get on the funicular with the ticket

We used balan then drove to the tram ride in near the football stadium. It is also possible to overnight park at the huge lake in front of the gendarmes

Do you need air certificates for cars?

Forgive me because I have given up on reading about silly French laws, but I might be driving through Lyon relatively soon.

Indigo is the only real place to park, its secure, althought the area is a bit rough.. Bus from just outside the campsite, then underground into the city cente,

Indigo has variable wifi, but if you logon to the hotel next door, its 'open'.

Lyon is a nice place to visit, great meat restaurants..

May be too late for you Chris but, if just driving through, stick to the autoroute. A6 & A7. You don't need air quality certificate if staying on the main route. You get to see a bit of Lyon and the river but there are rush hour bottlenecks at the tunnels, particularly heading North for some reason.

Avoid rush hour and you should be fine.
