I'm a newbie
So I’m working on Isle of Mull. My LPG will run out in next few days in my underslung tank. The closest service station in Onich has had their LPG pump decommissioned. So now I either have to drive all the way to Glasgow or Inverness to get replenishments, both options are very far and very costly. Has anyone ever been able to hook up a standard gas bottle to their campervan system? Or has anyone any bright ideas on how to overcome this predicament. I’m looking at electric ovens and hobs for an alternative temporary solution but at £150 it’s about the same cost as making the bloody journey to a garage…..all for a measly spend of £15 to fill my tank!!
Answers greatly appreciated 🙏

If you've got an external BBQ point you can connect a cylinder to it using a rubber hose but of course there must also be a regulator fitted to the cylinder! This is perfectly safe and was recommended to me by the manufacturers of my system when we had a problem in Spain.

No BBQ point

It is possible but you will have to break the gas line after the tank valve and regulator. How accessible is it?

Get one of these pipe from Gaslow. It screws into the centre of the filling connector in the side of your van. On the other end you put the cylinder adapter. You can get UK and most EU country cylinder adapters.

For a standard calor bottle you need an adaptor hose that wil fit a calor and your fill point, they are about £17.50 and you could get one delivered from Amazon, cheaper than moving your van. But the calor would be expensive anyway.

If you do have to travel for LPG there is a pump at Lochgilphead which is nearer than Inverness or Glasgow.
That’s good to know. The ferry alone will cost me £80 to Oban and back tho. The Lochaline ferry will be cheaper so do you know of a LPG garage further north or north of Loch Linnhe? Thanks

Not very accessible as it’s behind the oven unit. I could take the hob out to get at it maybe but then that would mean the hob would be out of action while a temporary hose goes to the replacement tank. If I’m understanding you correctly. I’m not a gas expert in the slightest

this looks like a possibility. I’m not knowledgeable on gas, hence the help request. I’ve looked at your attachment, do I not need a regulator in between the connection to my van and the gas bottle?

My boss can sell me a calor bottle and your right…much more expensive. But the return ferry cost alone will cost me 80quids so if I can not travel it will be cheaper. Could you post me an Amazon example please?

No. The adapter is the regulator. As the pipe has an end with which you can attach many adapters to its easy wherever you are. They can post them to you. All you have to get is a cylinder.

Have you tried these people? If they don't have it they may know someone closer who does.

Charleerodgers. Having looked at Helen's link, and specifically LPG, you may get lucky there, especially if you explain your plight.

Good luck. (y)

We get our LPG at an oil depot which has an LPG pump is why I wondered of there was one on (or near) Mull. It's always worth phoning and asking - opening hours might be limited and our oil depot only takes cash for sales of less than £20

Thankyou. I’ve tried these guys…well I’ve phoned them cause never anyone at the depot when I’ve called by. Head office told me Mull depot doesn’t have LPG and I’ve looked through the gates a few times and can’t see one either.

Charleerodgers did you get sorted?
Honestly….I don’t know! I went to the mechanic behind where I work and he said he knows a guy who knows a guy who maybe able to help. I called round again this morning and told me to come back later.
I ordered a few hoses and adaptors from Amazon as a back up which arrive Thursday and if they aren’t any good I will just order the Gaslow ones but they are charging me £30 postage!!! Island life is beautiful but a right pain in the ass sometimes

You can get an oven which works off those little cartridges. Stupid price though

That’s what I was originally considering but it costs too much, I won’t use it once I got LPG again and I’ve got nowhere to store it.

These people helped us out a couple of years ago with a problem with our gas hoses....

Ledaig Leisure.

Cant find a website for them and I think they are a sideline to a garage. They have a Facebook page....

They are about 7.5 miles along the A85/A828 from Oban Ferry terminal so there may be a bus if you got a foot passenger day return?

There is a phone number on the Facebook page so may be worth a call? Looks like they have limited opening hours?

Good Luck (y)
