We are increasingly seeing many vans turning up for refills that don’t have a filler cap ⚠️
So I hear the experts all saying “So What we haven’t had a cap for years “
I can’t stress enough how important the cap is, we drum into every customer of ours that if they lose the cap they MUST drink wine and use the cork or tape up the now exposed filler or wrap it with a plastic bag etc , etc .
The consequences of dirt in the fill point can be extremely embarrassing and will ruin your day ⚠️
Not one of our tanks or even one of our customers but I have tried to help, he shut a Morrisons petrol station for 4 hours, fire brigade attended with 4 appliances, liquid state LPG escaped from the filler point and the normal methods of dealing with it didn’t work.
A totally unnecessary event that could have been avoided.

I always use a fill point cap and have gaslow with a gaslow cap but will it prevent a leak or just stop dust getting into the non return valve.?
I check my cap frequently as I am using a hose adaptor and external bottle but the cap internal seems too springy to stop a leak.?

I wish they could come with a rubber strap attached like on a car filler cap as I have also left mine on top of a pump at a garage before. I try and remember to stick it in my pocket, but maybe I am overwhelmed with excitement to have a found a surviving LPG pump on a garage forecourt these days.
PS: Bad news The Texaco Garage on the A303 at Sparkford (Matia 60's style Diner next door) has been closed and taken over by Shell, needless to say no more LPG, that was where we filled up every trip down to the South/SW.

How did it create such a massive incident - did the NRV get stuck open with grit so the cylinder was venting backwards to atmosphere? To fill you need to be pushing the button so any issues you just release it so not much can escape if the filler isn't seated very well

Slightly separate issue, hope it’s ok to post here.
Filled up at Penrith y’day. After fill, couldn’t get bayonet to release for about 30s, after releasing trigger and lever. Pump isn’t covered was hanging out, and not under a forecourt roof , so I presume what has happened is that it was wet, and the cold has froze it to van filling point for a few seconds? Is this what happened? Only 5th fill, but others have all been fine.
If I had this scenario again, I would wipe connector dry first. Any other tips?
Penrith also a £5 admin fee for fills under £10..
Am also going to buy a spare cap having read the above…

Can you explain why, also what actually happened? Why would liquid LPG escape due to a missing cap? Sorry fully curious now :)

After leaving my cap off twice after refills, first time I found it a mile from the station on the road, second time I didn't go looking for it as I was miles away when I noticed, I fabricated a simple strap to hold it dangling whilst refilling.

The good news is that it looks like my local shell garage here in Northumberland has got gas back in at 65pence, but my cylinder are still full at the moment 🤣

There are several around Shropshire, Staffordshire. Filled up Thursday at Wem 82p, Proper Brass screw cap on mine with a Chrome lockable cover. It should technically be replaced by a new one. I wonder if the new one would be of the same quality?

Could you please post the location? We usually end up at Blaydon for LPG if heading north-south via the east. Or near Brampton on A69 via the west. That is an excellent price too. Safe and happy travels.

Here you go, simple but effective. A short length of nylon cord, small drilled hole in the back plate.

No cap on mine, did not know there is supposed to be one. I have to open the gas locker to fill.
Different scenario I'd think, but it wouldn't do any harm.

I'm not sure if Basildog is saying the cap could have stopped the outflow or that the lack of a cap has allowed debris to foul the non return valve.?
I think he's saying the lack of a cap caused it to be dirty. Hence an incompetent user.

Yes that’s exactly what can happen, both NRV,s stuck open , it was always the farmers that had this problem as they would lose the cap and not bother replacing ⚠️
