I'm a newbie
Packing up to come home today, emptied the casette in the elsan point after taking the cap off and putting it on a fence post. After all the swilling and cleaning went to get the cap to screw back on and could not for the life of me find it.
Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement, and are they all a standard size and thread etc or do I need the specific one for my cassette?

Thanks in advance!

Last thing at night, racing to get home due to the coronavirus epidemic, I dropped the cap down "the hole" at a Spanish aire whilst emptying a rather full cassette. Fortunately I carry a spare.

Next morning I espied the errant cap under a grate in the road (seems the "hole" just led into the wastewater drain system) so managed to lift said drain cover and retrieve it! Yehay!!

We keep a spare!. No use to you now I guess.
mrs Tm flushed ours down an Elsan point

Did Tm and Mrs. Tm divorce when he started Eurotrotting

OR did Mrs Tm reject the name Mrs Et?

OR has Euro Trotters started with Alzheimers and/or split personality syndrome?

We must know.

C&CC site a few days ago had a nice sign "don't let your cap fall down the hole, put it here".

Here was a tiny shelf, right above the hole :wait:
A number of the club sites seem to be providing a shelf. In the absence of that I put the cap on the floor. Loosing diwn the hole could defo ruin a holiday.

Did they go so far as thinking to put fiddles on the shelves?

Its a worry for me, I take the cap off at the MH and leave in the space vacated by the cassette.
Belt and braces I also carry a spare.

Feeling rather smug reading this thread.....
I always make a point of placing the cassette cap below the level of the emptying point, on the floor, not lost one yet.

But walking round the van yesterday I noticed the fuel cap missing! Oh sh1t. 😕

35 year old cap doesn't lock so I put it down while filling (won't do that again!)

Thinking back to when we last filled up (160 miles ago), we will be passing back within 50 miles on Wednesday , so will make a detour in the hope the garage kept it....... . 🙄

Already tried Halfrauds and a large scrap yard.... 😎

Too late for you this time but next time I have a tip for you.

I have all keys on one bunch. I leave the key on the fuel cap lock on flat bit of the pump, so the ignition key is also there and I cannot drive off till I have retrieved all.

This is something that completely freaks me out! I am be a bit dyspraxic when I want, seems to be associated with alcohol consumption around 12 hours before cassette emptyage, I ALWAYS place the lid, with TWO hands on the floor and outside inadvertent kickability distance, in case it disappears down some other inglorious orifice, I couldn’t bare the shame of reporting it’s loss to SHMBO!! I unscrew the blighter below the level of the lip of the poo receptacle as well. Better safe than sorry!

Cheers!

I was very lucky. I was on my first visit to an Elsan point after I bought my first motorhome. I was stood well back waiting for the gentleman ahead of me to finish emptying his. I saw him swing his cassette across the lip of the point and knock the lid into the drain. He started cursing and jumping up and down very agitated. I asked if I could help, he said no, so I made my excuses and went back to my van. He wasn't going to let me dump my load until he got his cap back I don't think.

This taught me an extremely valuable lesson. I always put my cap on the floor, away from where I may kick it or stand on it. No help I know. But that was a very direct and in my face lesson learnt very early on, I am still grateful to him to this day.

Pet worry of mine, try to keep it clear of dump point, but know 1 day I will drop one 😉
Must get a spare before next trip.

I am 100% certain it never fell down the hole. The fence post was behind me, a yard or so away from the elsan point, and it would fall to lower ground than the hole. I had thought that it somehow fell off and rolled away but literally searched the whole area carefully, other than the little fence there were no shrubs or other vans it may have rolled beneath...... I am now considering the thought that somebody may have picked it up while my back was turned. Particularly now the replacement has cost me almost thirty quid!!

I did just the same yesterday on a CAMC site... watched as it fell off the wall and went round and round the lovely white drain to end up in the little hole at the bottom nearly 3 feet down. Fortunate for the cleaning standards at CAMC sites... retrieved with a bit of a stretch. Now have firm instructions from SWMBO as to where to put it...
Bet that would hurt🤣😂😂

It’s not just the Brits that loose caps. A Dutch owner dropped his cap down the hole when we were in Germany.
I offered him a glove to use as a temporary cap. This was mis understood thinking I meant him to retrieve the cap. After a bit of Dutch vers English we got it sorted to his thanks and a bottle of beer.
I did retrieve the flat cap thing when it dropped it into but luckily floated atop the murk - then, in spite of wearing rubber gloves (which overflowed 🤢) I washed my hands a lot - then a lot more - and thought of Lady Macbeth 😳 - and decided never to tell anybody 🙄

You've told someone now and will never live it down :giggle:

Well, I always put mine on the floor but in an emergency could you not fit a disposable glove over the end and tied on with a rubber band?(y)

Was my first time. I was well back but do recall getting gippy  . I go nowhere near the elsan point now if anyone else is using it.

all this silliness over a bit of food you ate yesterday, it won't kill you if you wash your hands afterwards

Leaving a site in Galicia this morning a young Spanish couple in a rental jumped in front of me to get to the service point first where he promptly dropped the cap down the drain. I now know the Spanish equivalent of 'merde' as he repeated it continuously 🤭🤭. The owners tried all implements to try and retrieve it but to no avail..
