Travelling to Australia and missed flight connection in Frankfurt so got put in hotel for the night . So guess what - lost 2 of our 90/180 days

If we had already booked travel for January it could have seriously messed up our forward bookings … worth a mention I thought

I suppose you lost 2 days because you had to enter Schengen on the first day before the hotel and exit on he second day after the night in the hotel.

I presume that had you been in transit the stop in Frankfurt would not have counted.

Yes that’s absolutely right 👍

I wonder what would happen if you had used your full 90 days in Schengen. Would they leave you overnight in the transit lounge?

Well I guess that’s what we would have done . But who knows . Quite an issue with no answer which is why I flagged it up .

We went to Australia for 2 month , I’m sure it didn’t effect my Schengen allowance 😁

don’t you hate predictive text 😂

I suppose it's no different to if you changed flights in a country needing a visa to enter but hadn't applied as it was not going to involve leaving airside. I'm not a seasoned enough traveller to even know if that's allowed!

We're looking at going to Australia early 24 and that's a possible stopover but Dubai doesn't really appeal to me at all. Maybe I need to research it a bit but were not shoppers at all

we stopped for 48 hours in Feb 2019. the climate was lovely but yes a lot of shopping. Spoke to someone this week who has just had a fortnight there and toured around more but it was mega hot.

but if you just want to break the flight up why not use the airside hotel, its a lot cheaper than business.

Were just at the point of looking at routes I think at the moment Singapore for a few days is looking favourite

i would fancy Singapore but supposed to be very officious, lots of rules. we stopped at Hong Kong a few years ago and that was interesting but perhaps a brave choice now. Bangkok is interesting if its an option, easy enough to stay away from the seedy side.

Easy done in some places e.g. flights in & out of Gibraltar are often disrupted by local weather conditions requiring a diversion and coach trip to Malaga and 2 days Schengen lost.

Pity there isn't a trade in Schengen days where you could sell your spare days to someone who wants more (y):giggle:

Would them days not be recouped by January?

Highly recommend Singapore! We had a few days there just before Covid and would like to go for longer next time

Is 88 days instead of 90 such a hardship?
I don't think that's the issue here. In order to reset the Schengen clock so you can return for another long visit you need to be out of Schengen for 90 days. If, as seems to be case here, you put a foot in Schengen during your 90 days absence the clock starts again and you need to complete a new 90 days out of Schengen. If the OP had been planning to return to Schengen in January they may have had to delay the visit or cut it short, depending on the particular dates of their last long visit.

I rather ‘ like ‘ airside stop overs 😂 twice I have done it in Papeete , onward travel to NZ following day , I wasn’t going to pay top dollar hotel prices for a few hrs , very comfortable seats .

Was looking to go to Aus Via Vancouver Hawaii Brisbane,

I disagree. as its a rolling 90/180 I think they've just added 2 extra days to their clock.

Having lived and worked in Dubai for decades i would highly recommend a stop over in Singapore.....or Hong Kong.
Our route for Aussy on 15th next month will be Man-DXB-Perth-Melb-DXB-Man. Emirates.

Is HK still ok though? seems to be a lot of protests and a lot of people leaving.

Not been to HK for a number of years, i thin 2015 last time. We loved it then but a lot has changed. If you were to go i would suggest booking on the Island itself, not Kowloon (although good)
Singapore would be a great place for stop over. Been many many times, clean, polite, lots to see and do.
Never saw any of this strict aurthanit.......arian? that has been mentioned.
AND being bias, Dubai is a great place for a stop over. Don't believe most of what you read about the bad things. Wonder why they are getting something like 25 million tourists a year, they all cannot be wrong.

I was once in Singapore and witnessed a man being arrested for not flushing the toilet........................well on the spot fine. Fact. So whats wrong with that, nowt in my view.
