Look Closely At Motorhome Insurance Policy Small Print - Some Surprising Facts

2024 UPDATE
Mr Wombles did the tedious shopping around for motorhome insurance again this year & compared the small print on the viable options:
Caravanguard still won't insure self imports & remain the only company with this policy - have emailed to query this once again.
LV (Allianz) are only a contender for car & home insurance for us now.
NFU - well reputed but life is too short for their long, detailed phone calls to obtain a quote! Did this several times before with high prices only quoted. Might work better for some if you have an office near you or are an existing customer.
Safeguard & Comfort didn't give the level of Personal Accident Cover that we prefer but worth a look depending on your requirements.
We aren't currently members of CAMC or C&CC but both worth a try for comparison if you are.
A new one to us - Ripe Insurance with whom Jim has negotiated a 15% Fun discount https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/ripe-insurance-funster-discount-is-now-live.308064/ - we found getting an online quote quick & easy & it was a competitive runner up for us.
Our Saga renewal quote was a few pounds higher than last year for their comprehensive Select policy with our added enhanced Personal Accident Cover so rang to query this & mentioning the lower quotes (including Ripe) they went through our policy options & the helpful staff member spotted that we have more than 25 years driving experience whereas it was noted as 16+ years so a sizeable discount was applied (y) Don't know if this is a new thing to help keep older or loyal customers but worth checking if you are renewing/considering Saga Insurance. Making that phone call rather than just automatically renewing has saved us a lot of money & allowed an upgrade to their 3 year fixed rate Saga Plus with further enhanced cover but still at considerably less than even the Select policy renewal rate & as this beat all other quotes considerably now don't have to go through all this again for the next few years if we don't want to.
Insurance rates in different areas, different motorhomes & varying individual requirements mean that what suits us best may not be the best for you but hope that sharing our experience above may help some of you. Don't be dazzled by low initial quotes though as options that you may want all add up & the devil is in the detail!

Hassle every year at renewal time….. but…… the time to read all the “small print” carefully is before paying for the cover and not when making a claim. Thank you Wombles for sharing you investigations with Funsters.
