We go to London often in our van. Abbey wood (unaffected by the LEZ) Crystal Palace only if like us your van is compliant with emission rules. When you’re there it’s like being in the countryside anyway.
London comes in for a lot of stick but in our experience is a great place to go.
Museums, mostly free. Great public transport, free if like us you have bus passes. Underground is cheap if you use it correctly. Amazing theatres, cheap widweek if you do your homework and pre book. Great cycle paths along the Thames, great London walks etc etc. Many historical places to visit and some great pubs.
We recently saw the Book of Mormon, Les Miz, and Wicked, total cost £180 for the 2 of us midweek in the best seats, amazing value.
The original London walks are brilliant and only a tenner for us seniors.
Dont knock it until you’ve tried it.

That’s helpful, thank you. Our van is 18 months old and meets the latest emissions standards.

This means we would have to pay the Congestion Charge if we drive into central London (which we will never do in the van) but are exempt from LEZ and ULEZ charges.

Of course this may change over time but at the moment I can’t see it’s a problem for us. I feel sorry for those with older vans who may have to pay high charges 🙁
Yes our van is congestion charge only and is 18 months old. So if we want to do an overnight stop at Abbeywood we have to pay £15 for the day we arrive and £15 for the day we leave. That's £30 on top of our campsite charge. Just doesn't make senese to stay there anymore, unless you stay for a longer period and you can spread the £30 CC charges over the whole of your stay. Even then .....

I am finding these London charges VERY confusing..
I thought congestion charges are just central London.. so why you paying when you going no where near central London???
TOTALLY CONFUSED.
Edit... or do you need to go thro it to get to Abbey Wood?

We recently spent a few days in London and managed to see all 3 children. We stayed in a hotel on this occasion, the same one as darling daughter for convenience. We had a great time. Saw Back to the Future. Ate at some great restaurants, lovely walks, I love the hussle and bussle of cities for a visit. It‘s so much cleaner than when I was a student in the 70s and early 80s. People worry about safety, well we had the IRA then and you just carried on. I love London and when Claire comes back to England in July I will be visiting more often.

We like the Crystal Palace site, forgot to say. It keeps getting a reprieve. Hope that continues.

Think you need to have a look at the Congestion Charge map and where it applies, as it might save you some money. ;)

I don’t think that’s right. You would only pay £15 if you went into Central London with the van and Abbey Wood is miles from that.

You wouldn’t pay any charges.

You don’t need Oyster cards anymore. Just tap the oyster sign with your debit card, same price.
You pay on the tube tapping on and off at your destination. You tap on only with buses. If you have a U.K. bus pass you can use them in London, but not on the tubes.
Most museum’s are free, London walks are a tenner for seniors, brilliant, just meet at the relevant tube stations. A Weatherspoons app will save you loadsa money on food and drink. Pre booked theatre tickets through “last minute.com” will have great deals mid week.

UT if you do have a oyster card and rail card you can link them together to get 33% off yout travel, just see one of underground gate guards and they can assist with having it added to your oyster card

Note you have to do this every year you get a rail card

Well, change of mind.

We have booked to go in our caravan.

Can someone tell me the best way to travel into London or any other suggestions for visiting nearby places please?.
Just got back from a weekend at Denham camc club site. It's about a mile from the station but there is a bus from the site. The train goes directly to Marylebone and takes about 15 mins. Really good site . Not sure about the oyster card but I paid £ 8.90 return
