Hello everyone. I love the bargains you get at charity shops. I couldn't resist 8 balls of Lauriston Farm organic, un-dyed North Ronaldsay Wool for £6 - definitely underpriced. I am having a break from making octopals while the last lot are being checked, so started making a bobble hat for Derek. It will only take three balls so I'm on the lookout for a pattern for a thingy :Eeek: It's like a short scarf/cravat and one end slots through a loop to secure it. I don't know if they still exist but I had one as a child. There won't be enough for a scarf unless I can find more wool to go with it.

Have you looked on Pinterest?

Some lovely bakers out there.

I’ve just ordered a new sewing machine from ALDI as mine is getting very temperamental and I have a few bits of sewing I need to do.
I’ve also been thinking of having a go at quilting:eek:

I have an Aldi machine as my travelling machine. I have to replace it every two or three years. They are at the cheaper end of sewing machines, mostly plastic with metals parts here and there, so they do wear out. Having said that for occasional use or as a first machine they work well. A bit "clunky" (I strip mine down and oil as much as I can which makes it better) and they do a reasonable straight seam.

If you want to quilt (quilt rather than patchwork) you need to be able to drop or cover the feed dog mechanism - the tooth mechanism that feeds the fabric through the machine. It's best to be able to drop the feed dogs rather than cover them (my opinion only) as I have managed to break covers in the past.

After a couple of years you will be able to judge if you do enough sewing machine work to justify a better and more expensive machine or if the Aldi machine does enough for you.

I tried to order some of the yarn that will be on sale on Sunday via the web but it is all sold out online :( We'll be away on Sunday so not sure if I'll be able to get a lift to the nearest Aldi, might see if Sam or Phil will be able to take me across. Their Aldi carpark is not suitable for the van.

I love quilting. I took it up a few years ago and started making quilts for the grandchildren but I'm never home long enough these days to do make anything. Free motion quilting is an art which I'm yet to master.

I was terrified of FMQ until I went on a course - well actually it was two days in a classroom with 7 other would be FMQers. The teacher gave us some basic exercises and came round with encouragement and ideas. Just having all that time to play made all the difference - plus someone to point out why things were not working out how you expected / wanted. Now I pretty much FMQ everything. If it can be drawn with pencil and paper by someone it can be sewn with needle and thread by you. I always say I am needle drawing when I'm quilting - even if I have to trace and then sew.

If we end up in a field together with our machines and EHU we could have a go together :)

I've made free motion and applique pictures with my machine but that's not the same as quilting which requires much more time and concentration. I've watched lot of Leah Day's YouTube videos and tried to replicate it with limited success.
In the unlikely event we're in the same place at the same time and also have our machines and electricity I would love to do that!

Helen I bought some of their wool last year when they had it in and was very impressed with it I have made two throws and everyone comments on them. I’m hoping to get some of the baby wool on Sunday. If you can’t get yours let me know what you want and I’ll pick it up for you.:)

I do wish you hadn't mentioned buying yarn from Aldi, it led me to look at their website and want to buy some! Thank goodness the online stocks of the ones I like are exhausted ...

@Puddleduck Do you mind if I ask where you did your course?

This was the lady who did the course which was billed as free style embroidery

http://helencowans.co.uk/shop/

at the time she had a teaching unit in her garden which collapsed under the weight of snow one winter ..... only her sewing machine was holding up the roof!!!!!! I am not sure if she still does classes at her premises as the new unit (paid for by the insurance) is much smaller than the old one. She is based in Wooler, North Northumberland so a long way from you. It is even further from you that Helen Cowans though!

I've also heard good things about this course:

The alternative would be that once our house has rooms re-purposed there would be parking for your van on our drive and we could set aside a couple of days (no non-sewists allowed - they are banned to the kitchen to chef for us) to play and become confident. I am sure it is the practice and play that gives confidence and skill.

I saw the creative quilting course when I searched for courses after you said you'd been on one and thought it looked interesting. But your last idea sounds better (y)

If you want some Anthea I am more than happy to pick it up for you:)
Shhhhh now.
If you knew how much I already have at home you wouldn't have said that.
But thank you. X

I would be interested in what you think of it, I looked at it and still not decided on a cheap new one or a better quality 2nd hand one. Does not say how much it weighs. I do have an old Lidl one which sews badly, is very heavy and sounds like a steamroller:(

Are you leaving Tenby:(
Complicated.
Partially. We will be selling the house we currently live in, which is 5 miles outside Tenby, and buying somewhere in the Andalusian countryside. But we have smaller houses in Tenby itself which are holiday let, one of which we will do some work to and use as our UK base.
