Is it me or is the amount of middle lane and outside lane hogging getting worse?.

On the way out tonight, there was me and another car on the motorway. Some woman, blatantly sat hogging the middle lane. Not a care in the ******* World.

On the way back, Accident on the M62 closed at junction 10.

Switched to M56. Mrs. TM Counted a train of 14 cars all in the middle lane, all snaking along with not a single car in the inside lane.

Then we came up against a car in the outside lane. Nothing in any of the two inner lanes. Quick flash of high beam, still sat in the outside lane.

Drives me BONKERS

Maybe you should try driving properly in the U.K. before driving in Australia - have you actually read the British Highway Code and seen the TV campaigns saying you should drive on the left and inside lane when able to do so? Apt name you have indeed!:)

Lane discipline in the U.K. is generally very poor, there seems to be an arrogance about drivers who stay in the middle or outside lane to stop others overtaking them because they are driving at the speed limit.
I think people feel inadequate if they ever have to drive in the near side lane.
In France, there are very few lane hoggers, drivers generally pull in after overtaking leaving others to carry on without being held up, which is similar to the instructions in the Highway Code.

In France drivers generally put in a little too quickly after overtaking, still better than the UK lane hoggers.

It's generally a smother ride on the middle or outside lanes, maybe thats why it happens? I notice it more in the van than the car but when we returned from our last trip a few weeks ago, coming up from Dover i had to pull out to the middle lane just to keep everything in the cupboards.

There is a popular fallacy about "slow" lanes and "fast" lanes on motorways and dual carriageways. There is no such thing. There is only one driving lane, and that is the one on the left. All the others are overtaking lanes, and should only be used as such. And now middle laning is illegal.

In my opinion most mainland European drivers pull back over with the exception of Germany and UK.

When I was working I used to hate lazy drivers who cruise in the middle or outside lanes whether they thought they were at the speed limit or not.

It never stopped amazing me that once u overtook them they always seemed to then keep up with you no matter what speed you were driving at.

What really annoys me whilst in the motorhome is when you come up to a slower vehicle in the inside lane, so indicate and pull out to overtake it and then they suddenly wake up and accelerate to faster than you want to go, so you go back in. And then 2 miles up the road there they are again just dawdling along.

I gave up with it in the UK years ago .If my lane with me in it is going faster than theirs ,then I pass on the inside.
Many do it though as the inside lane is sh**e due to tramlining from poor substrate.

Never seen that in Germany. You get run down in a blaze of headlights & horns on the autobahn.

Middle lane marshals don't you just love them.....There is often a perfectly good reason why people don't cut in and out of the inside lane cruise control being one, when down comes the marshal doing well in access of the max speed limit then swerves across the two outside lanes nodding their head as they do it.

What does the highway code say about speed limits, I don't recall reading that going over the speed limit is ok.....:)

Using the cruise control is no excuse at all for breaking the law and staying in the middle lane when you are not overtaking. I use cruise nearly all the time on motorways and dual carriageways, but, with a bit of forethought it is easy to stay in cruise when you move out to overtake and move in again afterwards.

I’ll bet a pinch of salt to a pound a traffic officer would prefer to see someone driving with good lane discipline slightly over the speed limit. Rather than someone under the limit with poor discipline and wearing blinkers (metaphorically)

But do you recall that it does say that you should move into the inside lane once your overtaking manoeuvre is finished?

I agree, but its not your job to police it, don't compound the law breaking by lane hogging and making the other drivers frustrated who then tailgate and risk causing accidents.

The near side lane is that full of potholes, that’s why the majority drive in the middle lane.
:(:(

I love it when The Middle Lane Owners Club encounter a four lane stretch of road.

They get totally confused, and don't know which lane to block...

Only the near side lane with pot holes, you must live in a posh area. Haha

When it boils down to it there are only 3 reasons why people “lane hog” - ignorance (they don’t know the law), arrogance (they know the law and choose to ignore it); or stupidity (self-explanatory). Points 1+3 and 2+3 frequently occur concurrently. None of the above are excuses for breaking the law.

not on one side or the other but the fact remains if someone is cruising in one lane at the maximum speed there must be a hell of a lot of illegal speeding motors to catch up with them, is anyone complaining about them?

I once followed a Mercedes from the Eurotunnel to the Brighton a23/A27 junction he went middle lane all the way at about 60/65 he drove me insane. I didn't dare overtake him thought I would get knicked for speeding. Funny thing is it was the all singing all dancing Merc with lane assist see in the dark etc. The guy driving I would imagine was a high miler driver just coming from Europe were the driving is far better and 2 lanes is usually enuff for everyone.

Allow "overtaking" on the inside lane - that will make these sleepy people wake up and be a little more alert about other traffic. I bet most of them would hug the left carriageway to avoid others passing on both sides

But do you recall that it does say that you should move into the inside lane once your overtaking manoeuvre is finished?
Hardly relevant peter I'm traveling at 74mph speedo reading middle lane, the lorry I have just overtaken was traveling at 68mph speedo reading inside lane the next lorry ahead of me inside lane is also traveling at 68mph indicated. The outside lane is clear. What gap between the two lorries would you allow before I am accused of being a lane hog. Then we have the most important factor of all...........Where are you, what speed are you traveling at and what is your intention....simple question as the highway code doesn't make it clear..
