Lancashire ....

when this sort of thread comes up , i always find it unbelievable how many people have not been to blackpool, i used to think everyone had been to the illuminations

It isn't somewhere that I would have chosen to go to but as we're up there, it would be a good opportunity to have a look. I my youth, we went south or east for holidays and north (GOC) to see family. Now I'm older, we still go south or east but when we're in the northern counties, I'd rather go for a hike in the Dales or a ride across the moors than go to the bright lights but there must be something in Blackpool to attract so many visitors - they can't all be wrong.

Don't count on it:).......lived in Rochdale most of my life, not been to Blackpool since I was a teenager on a mission:)

Worth seeing once though...I suppose!

No need to go to the Dales for a hike, many splendid walks in Lancashire, even on the moors around Rochdale where I have spent many a happy hour.

A superb walk on a nice day is around the rim of Pendle Hill, park in the car park at the Nick of Pendle on the Sabden - Clitheroe road

Don’t forget to visit the Gov. website for travel advice for visiting 3rd world counties.

God built the Pennines to keep the heathen Lancashites out. Fact.

I don't think that the Yarkys said otherwise. I was just hoping to see what it is like for myself ;) Do I need to bring a torch and wetsuit to Lancashire?
No just your passport

And make sure yer jabs are up to date.

Oh, and I think they have leccy in some parts now :)
Yes your quite right we do, I believe Yorkshire will be getting it soon (y)

Yeh right, you've been hiding behind the big hills since we kicked your arse in the war of the roses :LOL:

Coast - I'd suggest a trip to Silverdale and Arnside area. Interesting coast, very impressive tidal bore if you catch the tides right. Many nice walks, and a few bridleways as you have your bikes. Lancaster is interesting for a half day wander, and is well served by cycleways One in particular since you have bikes goes from Caton, all the way out to the coast at Morecambe, with a branch going out to the sea at Glasson Dock. Whilst the naysayers decry Blackpool and Morecambe, the local councils have done a magnificent job in refurbishing the seafront, and you can cycle on the seafront, away from the traffic pretty much all the way from Fleetwood to Lytham (although short parts are closed off at present for further works). If you like impressive buildings, go and have a look inside the Winter Gardens at Blackpool. I wouldn't in all honesty go much further inland than the seafront though! Folks have mentioned the Trough of Bowland. A good number of MTB routes around Dunsop Bridge. Salter Fell Drove road is worth a ride. Technically easy, but remote and wild. Not one for a bad day. If you do drive over the Trough, consider extending the drive over and past Jubilee Tower. Magnificent views of the Bay and of the Lakes. If you are in that area, Scorton has some nice walks, and a couple of bridleways. Several nice cafes. If you've any interest in railways, Steamtown museum is at Carnforth, home of Brief Encounter.
Declaration of interest - I am Lancashire born and bred, were I now live, and lived in Yorkshire for the best part of 30 years, so I feel reasonably well qualified to comment!

We let you have that one to stop you all moaning :)

Judging by some of the responses on here, I think Lancashire & Yorkshire must be full of argumentative northerners and should be avoided at all costs :)

Stay south of Watford would be my advice

We're north of Watford but south of Watford Gap ... can't avoid going but it is great to have the wonderful suggestions given so far.

So what yer sayin is that Yorkshire folk are the result of buggery then?
Well that explains a lot

Just sayin like :imoutahere:
Many years ago, the Scots (spit) came down south and started sh****ng the sheep and pigs. The descendants were obviously a bit strange.

They divided off the area and called it Lancashire

As a Scot who lived in Lancashire for many years and now lives in Yorkshire, I find some of the above comments, as they have no smileys, somewhat offensive.
I prefer Blackpool in the winter, first time i took john to Southport he asked if it was shut, it was a quiet sunday afternoon. Trough of Bowland and Ribblehead area is nice, Rivington has been badly affected by the fires, but probably still worth a visit.

Thanks for the info. I don't think that the lack of smilies was meant to be offensive - I just work on the basis that Yorkshire folk are rather economical with their communication and they may have heard the rumour that there is a cost for using emoticons ;)

You have to make allowances.......he's from Yorkshire:)

Now, if I were a true Yorkshire man rather than an honorary one, I'd say that they having moved from amazing Scotland to wonderful Lancashire, @scotzsue has had settled in the paradise known as Yorkshire because she has realised that there is nowhere better to live.

However, I am a diplomatic lad and am grateful for all suggestions of places to visit in the county of the red rose :)

Did Monty Pythons do a 4 Lancashureman sketch ?

No. Coz that wouldn't be funny around the world. Yorkshire is famous. T'other side o' t'Pennines is a bit dull.

Yorkshire born and Yorkshire bred, strong in the arm but weak in the head, used to wonder what that meant but after reading some of these posts I understand now:)

Having lived near Blackpool all my life I understand the negativity about it however, that’s based on the tourist parts which are admittedly rough in places. Come inland a little and you’ll find some really lovely villages, Wrea Green and to the south Lytham, both very affluent areas with house prices to match! All within an hours drive of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. You just need to look beyond the obvious.

Right, I'd declare war, and say how wonderful Yorickshire is, but they'd just get upset. So better not as it's probably raining there now anyway :)
It is pouring

Just to redress the balance a bit, there is a small part of Lancashire that is great

It's Heysham, because you get the ferry to the isle of man for the TT and the Classic TT
That & the M6 to go south:)

A tour is coming together. Now looking for great campsites. We like basic sites - we don't need club houses, manicured lawns or white pegs. We do like pretty locations, local food and ingredients and enjoy sampling local ales.

Have you tried the new search for sites. App is available on iPad and android.
I’ve downloaded it and seems to be pretty damn good. You will have to pay a subscription but ‘tis not a lot. Worth a gander.
