Just watched a Brit

I think a lot of people have not worked oit the geometry of taps and cassettes.

Yes using the fresh water tao to rinse the cassette is not best practice.

However the neck of the cassette can only contact the outside of the tap nozzlem including the thread. Water flows through the inside of it.

If one then screws on a snap-on type fitting to the tap the outside of the tap is completely cobered and isolated from the inside where the water flows.

I cannot guarantee some cross-contamination over time but I think the risks are much less than the perceptionsand the fears expressed here.

As for using wipes to clen the outside of the tap, why not use them for the inside where the water runs through?

that's a good trick Lenny but my waste water outlet is right in the middle under the van so it would be impossible for me
Should be easy enough to mod so a pipe comes out the side & would make it much easier when dumping the grey.

At Woodside DrField we have frequently stopped people using our Elsan area as a full motorhome service point. What annoys me most is the emptying of grey water into our chemical disposal point. Some people have told me they do it all the time and had not thought about the implications of it potentially being a fixed tank. Stopped one chap filling his motorhome up there too, but in his defence he was a total newbie.

Now when it comes to our grey sink, yes we have narrowly prevented it being used as black waste area. And we have previously found a dog in there being given a bath by its owner, but the one I always remember was a young lady on her hands and knees washing up her pots and pans.

And for your info, we regularly use disinfectant wipes on our taps.
We saw a woman cleaning her pots at the elsan at playa de farnals.
It's that concrete lump on the right.
Can't say she was taking much of a risk as she had them in a bowl on the ground, each one was washed and put back in the bowl, seem pretty hygienic to me.
That lorry conversion eventually reversed in and parked up.

It's not the water.
It's the hands.

On the clean tap you hope most people have cleanish hands, and the end of the hose is stuffed into various filler points with little contact, and that filler point contact should be clean.

On the dirty tap, by definition people do not have clean hands, (or marigolds),
and the end of the hose is is stuffed into all sorts of unsavoury exit points, which by definition will be dirty.

Using the same equipment for both filling and cleaning does not pass the 'hygienic barrier' principal.

That said:
A rant from the owners of Cornish Farm campsite a while back outlined the issue:
You can put as many signs (with pictures) as you like, and make it as difficult as possible for people to use the wrong area/equipment to do the right thing, and you still get people trying to empty cassettes down the hand washing sink (next to cassette emptying facility)

What concerns me is "blow-back" from a user being overly exuberant with a high pressure tap!

unfortunately not lenny mine is right under the van outlet is via a lever hard to judge when over a manhole cover a drive over is ok if I get it right it is the one thing I would like to change even the new '25 vans are the same i belive .

Remember antibac gel does not kill viruses.

I've had some of the germs PP Bear listed and ended up very seriously ill with one of them. Definitely not just a bit of an upset tummy. The public health people did trace the source of the contamination and dealt with it.
i dont doubt that waterborne germs can have disastrous effects but did you actually contract the virus from the subject we are discussing?
But the hands carrying the cassette are the same hands the may touch the tap
have you ever been in a public toilet? ive seen people coming out after wiping their backsides and touching a tap that the next person might use and touch the very same tap with their hands...... has anyone ever been disgusted by that?

please, lets add a bit of common sense to this discussion,

for clarity - i have never done it and do NOT condone the act of rinsing/washing etc of a toilet cassette using a water supply that is intended for topping up water tanks on board a motorhome and that MIGHT be used for human consumption, its just that i'm sure there are plenty of ways to do it without it contaminating said water supply.

i just dont get hung up over other peoples bad (or lack of) etiquette when i can take my own steps of avoidance. if i saw someone with the actual tap head inside the cassette and i was waiting in line, i would prob say something and may choose to avoid using it or take other measures of personal protection.

Very similar where a food producer used a tap and hose for washing out vessels contaminated with cow shit then the same tap and hose to add water to the food being sold to the public (ie me). The public health people shut the place down immediately.

Since being so ill (30 years ago now and I miscarried an early pregnancy as a result) I have been OCD about public toilets etc and wash my hands according to the WHO guidelines. After washing my hands I use a clean tissue or paper towel to switch off taps / open doors etc.

I'm sure it can be done.
In the meantime fit a camera to aid dumping.

A tiny bit of tape to make where it is a line it up using your mirrors

I know it was a long time ago but your instructor may have used similar on your driving test when reversing

To name but a few…

Types of germs

Germs that can contaminate tap water and make you sick include:

  • Cryptosporidium
  • Campylobacter
  • E. coli O157
  • Enterovirus
  • Giardia
  • Hepatitis A virus
  • Legionella
  • Norovirus
  • Rotavirus
  • Salmonella
  • Shigella
I have work overseas most of my life I am imune to all of them I think :)

I could write a book, make a YouTube capturing what I seen since starting motorhoming in 1994. Single taps are commonplace....any hole in the ground is a suitable place to empty...nothing suprises me anymore...
Small campervans with no toilets are common, especially with the surfing community ....amazing how many love their early morning stroll...🤔🇪🇦

Name and Shame, Please!
It wouldn't be a fine up standing funster
But
If he turns up at a meet/rally and your hear 'it's him' loudly ....

Not sure that even comes close to being very similar to what the subject matter is, however I do understand and respect your position after what you've been through and hope that you don't have any long term on going issues.

A discreet pair of marks on the skirt done with a sharpie pen should tell you exactly where to position yourself over the drain.
(You may need a pair on the rear as well, if the pipe is not central)

That said £5 worth of 2" hose, a jubilee clip and a packet of cable ties, should enable you to put the end of the hose on the side or back of the van so you can see exactly where to dump.
