Just watched a Brit

Some people are disgusting!
We use disinfectant wipes on taps and don’t let the tap touch the can.
Chap on a CS in UK went over to empty his cassette-enclosed area specifically for purpose with tap-came away and walked straight over to drinking water tap-about 20mtrs away-and was going to use tap for his cassette. We both shouted at him. Said he hadn’t seen a tap by the cistern!

If they're not using any pre installed hose pipe and the cassette is not even close to the tap, is there really such a problem? So long as they're not rinsing AND disposing of the water near the drinking tap. It might not be etiquette but I'm not sure it's a health issue, but happy to be educated though

PS it's not actually something I do or would do, if I had to I would use an empty water bottle and fill and use that and empty dispose well away from the water tap !!!!

To name but a few…

Types of germs

Germs that can contaminate tap water and make you sick include:

  • Cryptosporidium
  • Campylobacter
  • E. coli O157
  • Enterovirus
  • Giardia
  • Hepatitis A virus
  • Legionella
  • Norovirus
  • Rotavirus
  • Salmonella
  • Shigella

I think there's a considerable risk of contaminating the tap via aerosols created while rinsing or transfer via hands. Don't think a guy using drinking tap to wash his casette is likely to be a prime example of outstanding hand hygiene either.

Most of them poke the cassette emptying spout right up over the tap, disgusting animals.

If there is no tap avalible for the cassette I use my waste water.

If they’re that disgusting do you honestly think they’d then be careful? Highly unlikely.

We were at the Sunshine festival one year and one of the organisers said this to us when we questioned where the fresh water taps were. I mentioned splashback, aerosol spray. I emailed a complaint, no reply. We could only find one sort and one chap was washing his cassette. The Blues festival in the same field at Upton upon Severn had clearly labelled taps. I digress, sorry.

The point is, it can be done without contamination..... You can't contaminate the water the next person would use to fill their water tank as that water has gone!. You can potentially only contaminate the tap/hose which could contaminate the water that comes out, but I pointed out that that could be avoided, or am I missing something?

I could post a list of all the hazards of drinking alcohol, BUT if done in the correct way none of them would apply.

We are currently in Estepona and the pitches are serviced and have fresh water taps and grey waste grids on, there are 5 chemical waste toilets next to an additional 2 drive over grey waste points at tge top of the site.
When we arrived I did my normal recce and passed one pitch and a german guy was down the side of his van washing his cassette out down the grey waste point🤦‍♂️

We use bottled water if drinking cold and for teeth. For tea and coffee it's boiled anyway that destroys any micro-organisms so will use the tap water.

Any suspicions about a fresh water tap means it gets anti bacterial wiped and some run and wasted.

We were waiting to use the service point at the aire in St Maxime Sth of France in October, and a French motorhome had attached his hosepipe to the elsan tap to fill his fresh water tank

You need to boil your water for at least a minute to kill off bacteria. My travel electric kettle is set to do this, but I have to force myself not to switch it off manually! I have to remember when using my gas kettle, if the water supply is at all questionable.

I fill my tank at home, from a tap and hose I know to be clean, but even then I always run off water for a couple of minutes before starting to fill the tank.
I carry a 10L container in the van for drinking water, and a couple of large sports water bottles, as it's usually easier to fill either of these from a safe source. I've filled up in cafes and at farm shops for example. I also carry my own tap connectors and short hose section. I clean any taps in fields or on sites before I use them.

Remember antibac gel does not kill viruses.

I've had some of the germs PP Bear listed and ended up very seriously ill with one of them. Definitely not just a bit of an upset tummy. The public health people did trace the source of the contamination and dealt with it.

that's a good trick Lenny but my waste water outlet is right in the middle under the van so it would be impossible for me

Rinse his toilet cassette with the drinking water tap

When asked where was the drinking water his response I don't drink it anyway

It was a hymer at Gibratla

I'd like to say thanks mate 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
Asked? :Eeek:
Unfortunately yes it does, I've frightened a few French men by shouting very loudly at them.
Girl! ;)

The correct MHF Official policy is to snatch the cassette out of the perp's hand, growl menacingly in his face "Dirty Bastard" and then hurl the cassette down the dusty gravelled road. Then go to Eddie's van to watch the rugby stating that there's a "chance" we may miss the game if we get kicked off!

That's what Jim does

The bloke chickened out and didn't make a complaint, and we did watch the rugby, England won from memory so we must have been playing wales!

But the hands carrying the cassette are the same hands the may touch the tap

Worse we ever saw was in Italy, camp site had a hose attached to the drinking water, signed as such, later we were watching the toilets being cleaned and cleaner used the drinking water hose to clean out the not particularly near elsan point 🤮🤢🤮
we did report to the office, only used bottled water till we left, still same hose in use when we left, but did not see it being used for that purpose again. Was about 12 years ago, can't remember the site. we got a lovely pitch after a couple of days.maybe to stop us watching the cleaning 🤣

At Woodside Field we have frequently stopped people using our Elsan area as a full motorhome service point. What annoys me most is the emptying of grey water into our chemical disposal point. Some people have told me they do it all the time and had not thought about the implications of it potentially being a fixed tank. Stopped one chap filling his motorhome up there too, but in his defence he was a total newbie.

Now when it comes to our grey sink, yes we have narrowly prevented it being used as black waste area. And we have previously found a dog in there being given a bath by its owner, but the one I always remember was a young lady on her hands and knees washing up her pots and pans.

And for your info, we regularly use disinfectant wipes on our taps.
