On my Second replacement gearbox now. Fitted 4 months ago. Usual problem - water in it. The garage that replaced it said they had siliconed the bit that drips water into the box so should be alright now...... it is alright until it gets warmed up, then gears become difficult to select and on my last trip out today, reverse gear started screeching! Is this water AGAIN or something else? Can't afford another grand to fix it! 2002 Ducato 1.9

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
Are you sure it's the gearbox? Could be clutch drag & the screech could be from the spigot bearing in the crank. I'd take it back to the garage for diagnosis.

silicon is utter crap in this sort of repair. the joints in the scuttle need cleaning of all old sealant and re-do with sikaflex or the cheaper puraflex 40. at the same time increase the drain size and fit a hose from the drain outlet past the gearbox so the water drains to the floor

my ducato has the modified pipe but i thought it was still a bit close to gearbox so i pulled it over a bit further with tie wraps, no sign of any water when i changed gearbox oil

What was the state of the replacement box, new/refurbed/second hand ? I would have hinted at a clutch issue until you mentioned the reverse gear screech. Hope it's something simple like just needing the linkage adjusted.

Thanks for all your replies. I am not entirely sure it is the gearbox and think I will take it to my local garage for a closer look! And I may query the guarantee. Good idea!

Find out where they put the silicon, it will never be a permanent fix and will need redoing every year or so, you will need to keep an eye on it.

Seems more like a work around to fix a design fault.

Does it have enough transmission fluid in the gearbox ?
