Itchen Toll Bridge - Southampton

We cross once a year on our way to the docks in our Discovery, needed to contain all swmbos luggage for a cruise. We have usually got away with the 60p charge though should be £1.20 according to the blurb.

toll bridge over the River Itchen on our way to Southampton Docks.

I got to be honest , i have only used that bridge once in 34 year's of driving , that was about 30 year ago and i found it a pain for traffic then , which looked to me to be caused by the toll itself . So now , i would normally plan on using the notham bridge , which of course has it's own set of problem's with traffic , so i would certainly plan on using it outside of the rush hour , were it's generally moving better . However , my normal route of choice would be the m271 , and approach the dock's from the west , itself not a bag full of laugh's , but generally the better moving of the bunch . Though it does cost more in distance , both fuel and time would be easily over ruled by better moving traffic , and as it turn's out the toll itself . The shortest route is not always the quickest/cheapest method , how much fuel would you burn , just sitting in the traffic alone .

The toll charges for the Itchen Bridge look likely to be going up, a short item on BBC Breakfast South Today gave us the heads up.

I haven’t used it for so long I have forgotten when it was, but I’m sure there will be much complaining.

Southampton City Council (Lab) always short of money.....

This problem still there. Live in Southampton but took bridge en route to a THS at Victoria Country Park. Used to paying when using the car, only inconvenience is they change the rate during the day so never know what change to have ready. So we are in the van this time when it flashed up £25. Pressed the help button to explain we are a 3.5ton motorhome. " OK, I will reset you to a large van rate at £1.40, don't come this way again in your motorhome." The usual car rate is 70 or 80P so paid quickly and drove off. I reread their toll rates, I agree that I was over 2.39metres (eight foot?) but do not agree I am an HGV.
I intend to write to the operator asking them to review this. I expect they use a height sensor to determine you are over 2.39metres and charge as if you were an HGV. I will suggest they may consider using their number plate reading system to determine if registered as a motorhome, it won't be that novel an idea.

Ex resident of Warsash and worked in Bitterne & Eastleigh from 1986 to 1990. Happy memories but now happier in Scotland.

I live in Southampton and only use the bridge on my motorbike, it's free 🙂

You could sit there till they called the police, they could arrest you if you was driving an “HGV” without the appropriate HGV licence!! If they didn’t arrest you perhaps they could let the booth know it’s NOT and HGV.
That said it’s their bridge their rules, the terminology is wrong. If they had a big board a mile before saying HGVs £25 how many of us would think it applies to us??
Probably none of us🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I use the bridge regularly. Here's the sign with the charges. Note it does not mention HGVs, just the permitted heights, so there is no argument!

I know this is an old thread but worth noting - I thought I had my Garmin set to avoid tolls but I am blaming an update which moved the option from Preferences to Settings and turned it off. Was merrily following the instructions and suddenly I was in front of the barrier with £25 to pay flashing up. While I was muttering niceties and searching for my credit card the speaker came alive and a nice lady said she could let me through for £1.40 or I could go out using the bus lane and find a different route. I chose the £1.40 and she said dont bring your vwhicle this way again.

I preferred the old chain ferries when I used to cycle through Southampton to the New Forest as we had a short break waiting for them to arrive, happy days.

Now the toll is £40.00

Frankly this is discriminatory! Motorhomes are not HGV and should not be penalised as such! The height definition is clearly inadequate and should be weight based at over 7.5 tonnes and limited to commercial vehicles! I'd take them to County Court and see what happens!

Probably the prices will go up again later this year to cover lost revenue as the bridge is shut from the 15 July untill the 6 September to all traffic during maintenance work except cycles and pedestrians, routes into Northam bridge will be very busy.

If you read carefully, you will see that "HGV" is just one general type of vehicle given for illustrative purposes to show what constitutes a "Class 4" vehicle. Read beyond HGV and you will see "Mobile Homes" in the same category. If you were to take it to the county court I guess you could try arguing that yours is `a "motorhome" rather than a mobile home (the latter being something you might find on a static site, the former being something you drive around in) but I suspect the council's solicitor has the better case so you would be adding the cost of the claim, plus the council's costs, to your toll charge. Results all round!

We drove across it the other week. Quoted something like £25. Pressed the enquiry button and stated I was a motorhome. Charged us something like £4.00. Good job!
