We are considering a trip to Isle of Mull end of April. Our van is Adria Matrix 7.5m long + bikes. Has anyone any experience of a trip. Any advice would be much appreciated on things like wild camping (in a large outfit), Campsite recommendation, thinking 2 nights at Tobermory campsite also would our Adria be OK AT Fidden Farm. How long should we allocate to stay thinking 5 days is this long enough. We enjoy wild life nature and cycling and any recommendation of places to vist would be much appreciated

There is a lot to do on Mull - especially if you like wildlife. We could easily spend a fortnight there even though we've been there several times before.

What time of year are you planning to go?

Thanks Martyjwr. Thinking 5 days probable not long enough. Towards end of April

5 days will be an introduction. Add on a day on Iona, some time otter watching, possibly puffins, some hiking and chill time...

And if you like mussels, they have the best in the world, IMHO at Inverlussa.

last time I was there fidden farm campsite was shut and I found a lovely little spot at the back of uisken beach...
not a site as such but you only paid the land owner a few pounds and it was perfect for the kayaking I was doing at the time...
if you do visit that area on mull then a trip to Iona would be worth a look over..

I recommend hiring a wildlife guide. They know the best spots for wildlife viewing and usually carry a scope for looking at distant sights such as White tailed Eagle nests. We saw multiple golden eagles, otters, divers and other sea birds and much else. Probably a bit early in the year for nesting sea birds, but a boat to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles is well worth it. I think it's better than the Farne Islands as there are no fences or buildings there. You have to be really careful that you don't step on the puffins.
Iona is magical and worth a full day. Although I didn't get round to it, Ben More is a Munro, and the views it gives over the island and the Western Highlands is spectacular.

We have been all over Scotland and I do think the roads over the back of the island are some of the narrowest we encountered.
However we still made it 👍

Done Mull a few times with a 36ft RV so you'll be fine. Be mindful of using the passing places and ALWAYS on your own side. NEVER pull to the other side thinking you're being helpful, it's not the done thing. Pull up opposite the passing place and let the oncoming vehicle use it.
Be aware that a great many drivers on Mull are VERY fast. You may be on holiday and quite understandably dawdling and scenery watching, they're working. Keep your fuel tank topped up, not that many fuel stations though obviously it affected me more at 10mpg!
Fidden site is one of the most stunningly scenic sites on the planet. I've cycle camped there and stayed with different motorhomes. Incredibly peaceful and wonderful swimming if you're brave/daft enough.

Done Müll numerous times with and without eight metre Moho. Some of the dead end roads leading down to the bays and beaches can be challenging! but doable if you're confident. Even if you can only manage five days on the island it's worth going. Make sure your ferries are booked!

Worth checking out ferry prices, there’s a big increase this year. Also if you have set dates book early. Calmac are not allowing Motorhomes to wait in the unbooked/standby queue

Give them a call to check what day they are harvesting so you can collect them or have them reserved for you. Ensure you have your other ingredients ready as there aren't many / any shops in that area of the island and it is a pretty area to visit.

We visited Mull 2 years ago, stayed at Crannich Campsite, Fidden Farm and Lochbuie and would recommend them all
For seafood try Cafe Fish in Tobermory and visit Calgary Bay
Loads of wild life sea eagles, deer but didn't manage to see an otter
There's a motorhomer's guide to the island

The drive from Calgary Bay to Dervaig on the purple route is interesting:oops:

Thank you all for the advice. On what you have all said we will probable extend the stay to 7 days on Mull. Just wonder though if anyone wild camped or have we got to book campsites. Thanks again

We wildcamp most of the time there but our 'van is only 5.6m long. Most wild camping places would accommodate longer 'vans. I think that you would have plenty of choice at the end of April so would not worry about booking places ... however, we have not been there for 5 years or so and things might have changed.

What is the midge situation on mull end of april, early may ?

Weather dependent, it shouldn't be tooooo bad that early. I wouldn't leave it any later tho'. Much as it can be a pain when you're sat in the deckchair, the best best is to find somewhere exposed with a bit of a breeze cos they don't particularly like flying in any sort of breeze and huncker down. It's not foolproof but it helps.

We are heading over end of April. I think that you might need to have a campsite(s) booked for your visit and it may be checked by Calmac. Mull doesn't appear to be encouraging wild camping now. It mentions this when you book the ferry on the CalMac website.

Don't forget there is an alternative ferry to the Oban - Craignure.

It is much shorter and runs from Fishnish to Lochaline by Calmac...

It opens up a whole new area to explore, the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Lovely unspoilt area on the mainland to the north of Mull. You can return to the A82 Fort William road via the Corran Ferry.

Enjoy Mull. Don't forget to download a copy of the Hebridean Overture to set the atmosphere when you visit Iona.

Is the Kilchoan to Tobermory ferry still just turn up and buy a ticket? Long way round but also beautiful.

As these islands rely to some extent on tourists and if you can afford a ferry, surely you can afford a few quid for a Campsite !

Visitmullandiona website says please use campsites due to overcrowding etc . So I assume they don't welcome Wild Campers, and I don't blame them we are plagued by them in spring and summer

Be mindful of using the passing places and ALWAYS on your own side. NEVER pull to the other side thinking you're being helpful,

Had a foreign driver do that to me on Skye, I’ll nearly did one in my pants 😳

Calgary Bay is a must for wild camping. fantastic spot

Some of the locals aren't fans of motorhomes wild camping & will pip their horns at you whatever time of day or night it is. We've wild camped there a couple of times but haven't been back since the start of the pandemic. (We were there when the first lockdown began & had to get off the island quick & drive back to Lincoln.) We did stay on sites too but there aren't many so make sure you've booked before you go.
