is it worth it ??

I would suggest best course would be to get several quotes.
Ask them if the existing roof can be repaired (patched?), or indeed, is a new roof the only solution.
I'm a bit concerned that someone can quote £4.5K for the repair, but doesn't want to take the work on ?!
I had a leak on my Bessecarr which Paul of Edgehill Motorhomes ( 01623 631837) in Mansfield effectively sealed. Him and Lee are completely trustworthy in my opinion and if you are near to the Midlands it well worth to give them a visit.

Paul is very experienced and although I have new mhome I would have no hesitation in going to him for advice.

I noticed that Paul was recommended by another Funster a week or so ago.

my concern would be if the roof is removed on your own drive

I certainly did not say remove the roof, I said remove the inside lining. Little or no structural weakening. Once the timber frame is exposed it could, or could not, be trivial to rebuild it.

Look on here for the photos of a serious FUNster rebuild done recently.

Any competent DIYer can do it.

That £4500 would likely be £500 materials and the rest labour/profit.

I think the OP has answered her own question really. Without repair it is is worth £3K but add the cost of a repair £4.5K then it is worth £12K. As someone pointed out earlier if you spent 3 +4.5K on another MH would it be as good as the one you already have after repair? I think not. The vehicle is fifteen years old which is not exceptional for a MH, plenty of older ones still around.

Of course there is the DIY option and the figures above may not be accurate but I fear biting the bullet or whatever is required and if the OP is able to, get it repaired, however that is done.

I was thinking exactly the same!. caravan repairer £500 materials £1500 labour

plus I hope its covered at least with a tarpaulin....

Is the existing roof fibreglass if so it's not a big job to overlay what you have
You wouldn't want Ruberoid due to the weight

Sometimes it's better the devil you know

what do I do next Brian? we need it ready for Chester

:p

Hi LOVEBUG1...
I agree with Brian (Hilldweller)
If you choose the repair option, then the inside roof lining will have to come off ANYWAY !!
SO why not take it off NOW (carefully) and have a "peek" at the inside structure of the roof..
That will possibly reveal the problem Re the sagging roof, you can then ascertain the level and cost of repairing..
The actual sealing outside of the roof, could possibly be done using glass fibre matting and Gel coat.. A boat builder should be able to help/explain that process.. (I have no experience of that)
Hope all the help and sympathy/ suggestions are of use.. !!
Mitch..

£4500 quote sounds to me like they could do the job, but don't want to, try getting some more quotes.

I would pull the ceiling lining off and see what you find (nothing to lose) if the wood is sound then 4 coats of rubber roof what we did, then had the lining replaced professionally £500.Trouble with roof leaks impossible to pinpoint as the water finds the lowest point to show itself. 2 years on no problems

Lovebug1.. Let us know how you get on with your problem..
Good luck..

Time to learn DIY.

First, and you might as well do this yourself, what have you to lose, is rip the inside of the roof out, then you can see the problem. It's not rocket science, a roof if very simple. If you repair the structure inside then bond on a rubber roof it might be a solution.
Totally agree I've repaired caravan walls in the past it's not hard. I'm not sure but I think the Chasson is a GRP roof so it won't be bonded should make it even easier, & there are only a few places it can leak, rooflight seals, & joints.
Remove the top lockers then take out the internal roof panels then you will be able to see what's going on.

Another option do Chasson do factory repairs, got to be worth inquiring.

OMG .... So much advise ... For those of you who DIY I am in awe ! I am more distroy it yourself, and in truth I could not even get on top of motorhome as I'm frightened of heights so no more advise on HOW EASY it is! Next time tell me to bring it round to YOU and you can fix it!!

I did love the banter between tootled and hindweller so funny ... Like reading a Tom and Jerry cartoon hahaha. Anyway just so you all know I have decided to GET THE ROOF DONE ! I really want to use my MH this summer on the IOW so any advise in were to stay would be great. Thank you all for being so generous and non-patronising ... You all gave great advice and my decision was made on the fact that the van was gifted to me and to only spend 5000 on it seemed worth it xxxx

Oh dear....call around caravan repairs and halve that 5k:(

Thanks judgemental but I am happy with quote now .... I really did try and find a repairer who would do it cheaper but all I got was lots of sucking of lips and no commitment of time or price ... If I had brought her home sooner (from Spain ) then maybe I would be 2500 better off ... I now have you and my motor-fun specialists to guide me through the perils/joys of owning a MH so maybe it was meant to be ! X
