Getting Better
Popped into my local’ish tuning today and got some details, looking to save on mpg not being a boy racer…. I’m getting around 25-28mpg at the moment.
Any thoughts ? Would you…🤔

YOUR CELTIC TUNING QUOTATION
Dear Garry,
Thank you for your enquiry with Celtic Tuning, leaders in Electronic Engine Enhancements.
We are a global brand with a dealer network in 29 countries worldwide and full mobile facilities in England & Wales. What sets us apart from the competition is that we are genuine software developers with the technical ability to develop bespoke software in house; whereas most other UK tuning companies are re-sellers of software from third party companies. Not all tuning is equal, a remap is not simply a remap, it is the end product of a lengthy development program.
All of our software is developed in our state-of-the-art facilities using our two 4WD dynamometer test cells. All engine parameters are logged to ensure we provide the safest available software upgrades for your vehicle which are also fully MOT compliant.

HOW WILL IT AFFECT MY FUEL ECONOMY?
With our diesel upgrades, customers regularly report fuel savings of up to 10% but is very much dependent upon your driving style. This can be achieved on our performance remaps as well as our economy maps.
Our economy maps are designed for efficiency on part throttle and are for those customers focused on improving their fuel economy. Fuel economy savings are achieved by getting through gearings quicker and maintaining higher gears for longer not a set speed for a prolonged period of time returning X amount of fuel savings.
We provide all stages of tune through to full custom setup so if you have specific requirements please just ask. On many applications we also cater for larger turbos and injector upgrades so if you are looking for ultimate performance then we have the knowledge and ability to do just that.
Don't just take our word for it, there are hundreds of testimonials from customers all round the world. To see what they have said please follow the link:View Testimonials.

How many miles will you do and compare that to the £300 cost. It will take a while to break even, before you start saving money

Probably around 10-15k a year…🤔

They also said it will fit on their dyno rolling road….😎

The Comfortmatic F40 gearbox is only designed for 400Nm torque so asking it to take 500Nm could end in tears. If Celtic will warrant the gearbox then fair play but I suspect they won't. It would also be interesting to see if their super dooper rolling toad is big enough for a motorhome

Edit - seems it is big enough

as I said on the other thread, an extra average 2mpg is going to take a while. 500 gallons is 10,000 miles at 20mpg Or 454 gallons at 22mpg so nearly a whole year to break even. Based on loose numbers but in the ballpark

Done a quick calculation, if I do 10k a year and got 4 miles to the gallon more then a saving of 203 litres so at £1.64 ltr that’s
£333 saving over a year…🤔😎

This… is my only worry, the comformatic can be a troublesome gearbox and this alone would stop me doing it but the van has done 117k on it so far.….🤔😎

4 extra mpg is nearer 20% and they suggest about a 10% gain on average

Yeah I’m being optimistic, they said 2-5 mpg improvement but at 2mpg I’ll get my money back within 2yrs and the bonus of better drivability…🤔

The Comfortmatic problems are usually a software glitch, albeit costing thousands whilst ham fisted dealer change bits until they get lucky. Fundamentally the GM F40/Comfortmatic box is very reliable and robust and has been fitted to loads of cars and vans, but adding 25% extra torque to any box will always be a gamble

Interesting…. I am a tight fisted git and diesel mizer so I never give it the rev’s but there’s always a chance or an occasion…😎

The remap of the 2.3l & 3.0l simply increases the torque limit at a given throttle position to give an improved feeling of driveability, so you could be putting the full 500Nm through the box typically as low as 1500rpm if the map allows this.

I have thought twice... three.... four...many... times about getting remapped ..
And then think.. yes I only have 130BHP and 4t BUT I can still cruise at 70mph with no issues.
May need to down shift on occasions.
But is really a big issue... so 5 yrs down the line and I still haven't.
Keeps my left knee fit 🤣🤣

It depends, who with and how.

I had my Sprinter re-mapped and 50,000 on miles it has been superb, transformed the van (SWB RWD 7G-Tronic Automatic) from a Slow drag of a thing to drive to a Big massive E-Class.

Come on be serious boy, it don't work like that. If you have more power avaliable you will use it, probably resulting in worse mpg.
Also those dual mass flywheels don't like too much torque thrown at them.

Good point. I had my 3 litre manual remapped but always worried about what would happen.

Why do we always want more???
Why are we not happy with what we already got??
If we really wanted more Why did we not put our hands in our pockets and buy more.... IE. 180bhp instead of cheapskate 130php.
As stated I have 130 and more than enough..

I’m watching this with interest….
I too have a 3 litre comfortmatic in our 4600kg Rapido. Ours is 2015, 180bhp. I’ve always been a fan of a Tuning Box, and I have had fitted one of these on various cars we have had over many years. Including a 1.9pd VW sharan, upgraded to around 150 bhp, which had 160k when I sold it with no issues. I now have a VW Touareg, which has a DTUK box on it, giving around 300bhp, but this is a full, 8 speed auto. I’ve had this tuning box on for 7 years, with not one bit of bother.
But, I’m still wary of upgrading my Fiat Ducato to over 200bhp because of the problems you read on here with the semi auto box. Our Moho has only covered 27k, I always drive it with the “up button” pressed, and never had any problems in the 4 years of ownership. I average 28mpg doing a steady 65mph, and I use the cruise control whenever I can. The guy who does the mot’s on our vehicles says he can remap it for £200. But I just can’t make my mind up.

If you have a lead foot on the pedal it won’t make a difference 🤔🤔😁

Had my Iveco done and it is a few more MPG but it’s the torque I was after to help with cruising, definitely a lot better and not up and down the gears.

Im not getting why you want 200hp in a PVC  or are your details out of date. IMO I would defo err on the side of caution with comfortmatic, you re getting away with it so far, why push it? I ran a 4500kgs A class on this engine albeit manual for 9 years it never felt underpowered to me.

To me it's like having a heart that runs perfectly and then deciding I'll have a new heart fitted so I can walk a few steps faster, I personally wouldn't bother for such a relatively small gain against the damage that could be done in the long run.

Seems to.me remapping is a craze , if it ain't broke and all that ........

To be clear…. I’m not after more power, I’m after better fuel consumption.

IF I get it done I’m after a 2-5mpg increase which means I’ll be in profit in 18 months plus the possibility of it driving smoother.

I’m a diesel miser and always drive for the optimisation of fuel… it’s always a personal mission for me to get the best mpg out of any vehicle…😎

We had ours remapped - a Fiat ducato 2019 van conversion. We did it mainly for ease of automatic gear changes and extra torque, this and we have & also noticed extra 1/2 mpg. Very pleased with Celtic tuning and so far so good!

we have a 2007 3ltr 160bhp Fiat pvc.
found that driving around in a lower gear but under 2000 revs has increased our mpg.
used to get into 6th gear asap, but after travelling around Morocco and subject to 60 kph regulations, used 4th gear to keep within the speed limit. Then 5th gear to keep to 80 kph
To my surprise the fuel economy rose, finding just below the 2000 rpm to be a sweet spot for fuel economy and driving experience.
