Is it possible for a motorhome to hook up to electric car charging points?

Pull up in town, out with the step ladder and plug into one of the Christmas tree lights points.
All are 16 amp blue sockets around these parts.
Speaking as one of the old guys who volunteer to put up our local Christmas lights, may I suggest you will need a long ladder. However, best to remember us pensioners have lots of time on our hands and police our lights with grim determination. Oh, and the sockets are turned off for most of the year.

There are alternatives, many sites and Farmers fields have Pylons
All we’d need is a few “Great Scotts“, a copper arm and 380,000 giggawatts and we’d be there, although I’m not sure many vans would make it to 88mph 👍🏻

There are many different types and powers of EV chargers, but many provide standard 240V AC rather than high voltage DC. Certainly all the house chargers (Type 1 3kW and Type 2 7kW) will do this. Type 1 is equivalent to a 13A socket, and Type 2 is similar to an electric hob supply. The plugs are 5-pin, and the extra pins are for the safety interlocks and simple communication between the charger and the on-board charger.

For example, for normal hookup posts, you can unplug the cable at the MH end and drop the socket into a puddle, it will still be live so the post will trip. However if you do the same from a car charger point, the power is cut off as soon as it's unplugged. One of the extra pins senses the disconnection and cuts off the power.

The communication 'protocol' as it's called, can be done by a small cheap chip in the post charger and vehicle charger. Once that's sorted out, it's just like a standard site hookup post. The vehicle charger can take as much power as it wants, up to the limit of the post charger.

For an electronics company making MH chargers, it's a very cheap addition. Probably the most expensive bit is the plugs and 5-way cable.
