Is it normal to not be allowed to see the V5C when you buy a motorhome?

dont own one yet
I asked if I could see it to check the VIN number (as always recommended) and was refused, due to GDPR but she read the number out from it to me and it matched what I had photographed from the van.

Is this enough?

You could tell them that you are applying for a French emissions windscreen sticker the process requires you to send a photo of the V5

Walked away from a purchase off a dealer in the north west of England last year because absence of V5 became apparent. They wanted me to apply for a new one as though the old one was lost. I declined and forfeited a £500 deposit but I’m better off with the van I have now, purchased from a friend.

I can’t work out how I could drive one home legally for 3 hours and dvla confirmed this as tax is not transferable and there is a delay in getting a replacement. Dealer stinks in my view.

Always. Repeat always do a vehicle history check. Plenty of companies offer this service. Watch out for logbook loans, finance etc.

Can't see why you would lose your deposit as they didn't have a V5 they shouldn't have been selling the vehicle.

If they won't return the £500 deposit for a vehicle which they couldn't legally show they were able to sell then you should be able to get it back through the small claims court, I suspect just threatening them with that would get them to refund you.

Yes we’d done an HPI which advised us to check the VIN number for ourselves, as does the government website

Thanks for all the replies

Several issues with this one when we went to collect so we came away without it
Sounds like you have made the right decision.

If it doesn't feel right, then always trust your instincts and walk away.

Your van is out there waiting for you but it wasn't this one.

Thanks ….. and deposit returned
Good decision. The official Government advice given on their website says to check the V5C so clearly GDPR does not apply. This is what they say.
“Ask to see the V5C vehicle registration certificate (‘log book’). Make sure it has a ‘DVL’ watermark, and the serial number is not between BG8229501 to BG9999030, or BI2305501 to BI2800000. If it is, the V5C might be stolen - call the police as soon as it’s safe to.”

According to them white is black and all would be well and I was talking nonsense. Used their terms and conditions as leverage to cancel my reclaim via credit card. Too much else going on to stretch out a counter claim.

Important lesson is don’t buy from a distant dealer and especially one whose t’s and c’s say a deposit (separate matter) to hold van for viewing will be forfeit unless reclaimed before departing site after viewing if vehicle not ordered.

I’m sure you are right but I couldn’t give that the time and space then.

Perhaps you should share the dealers name, so we are all aware, sounds like one to be avoided to me

oh and as to this nonsense that seems to have also started in the motor industry, pay a deposit to view…..every garage that’s said that to me has had the GTF treatment…..
