I have completely emptied the motorhome and due to weight of our new e bikes am being very careful what goes back, my question is regarding the fire extinguisher it weighs 1 kilo and have carried it and its predecessor all over uk and Europe this past 11 years and am considering leaving it behind to save weight BUT is it essential kit ? do some countries and insurers require you to carry one? regarding its intended use my gut feeling these day would be just get out and away, what do you guys think.

Never.

Imagine the consequenses should you need it.
And as part of legally then no, I dont think there is , but common sense says yes of course.
Please dont throw out the smoke detector will Ya

It’s one of those things you won’t miss until you need it.

If you really need to save weight, have a look at the Fire Safety Stick. Probably more appropriate for most MH fires as well, than the usual powder extinguisher?

Imho powder extinguishers are the work of the devil.
Corrosive powder makes a colossal mess and if used on, say an engine, likely writes it off.

CO2, in the absence of Halon.

In Switzerland you must carry 6kg if you are over 3.5t... :( At least I was allowed to have 3 x 2kg, and placed them in such a way that they are accessible from any side...

Tumerc Look at getting a fire safety stick, weight a lot less than a standard extinguisher. Same protection (yes costs a bit more) but weights a lot less. (210 grams instead of a kilo).
And I believe it has a longer ‘shelf life’.

I carry 4, can’t honestly believe that you’re even asking. To save 1 kg, make sure you both poop in the morning and carry your potential life saver 👍🏻
But you need to "poop" away from your van. No use taking it with you if you're watching your weight. :xrofl: 💩

Are you really serious Tumerc ?

extinguisher, smoke and co detectors along with fire blanket, all essential safety equipment as far as I’m concerned and happy and hope to never have to use..

I once bought an Adrian Flux policy (cancelled within an hour of getting the documents) and noticed in the T&Cs that I needed two fire extinguishers. I suggest that you check carefully 🙄

40 years ago we had a car fire and had no extinguisher. Luckily others stopped and helped with their extinguishers.

Always carry one - in your motorhome and in your car. (y)

Less doughnuts = fire extinguisher on board.

Other options might include leaving a jumper or 2 behind, a couple of less books, weeing in bushes instead of van, lose a telly, one less bottle of wine pasta instead of potatoes, no cutlery and eat with hands, use spray oil instead of litre of veggie oil, try naturism, less air in the e bike tyres, inflate numerous helium balloons to counteract the weight.

One kilo is what one litre of water weighs, just put 1 litre less water in your tank, problem solved! ;)

We had occasion to use a fire extinguisher once in our MH, if we hadn't had it I don't think we'd have still had a MH!
