Is it customary to give other motorhomers a wave when driving ? In Australia its the done thing to give a little wave as you pass on the road.

Oh yes waving it's the law!!
Although there are different wavers!
The full raised arm and hand
The raised hand
The raised finger
And the 2 handed wave from the manic passenger!!

Yer right @Anthea M there is a difference, BUT! it goes on what you are driving, I'll give examples, but first a lesson.

Years ago, (last century actually ) While I was waiting for my Seamans Book to come thro, I drove long distance for a company that had 17- 4 wheelers, 3-, 6 wheelers and 3- 8 wheelers.
As an 8 wheeler if you met a 4 wheeler on the road you languidly raise your right hand while yawning & feigning boredom.
A 6 wheeler, you saluted by passing an open palm over half your windscreen.
An 8 wheeler you covered your whole windscreen while wearing a maniacal grin.
So, just to explain as regards to M/Hs.

If? like me, you drive a creakingly ancient 1992 VW T4 Autosleeper about the size of an MPs Duckhouse, well ! you get a bored hand raised quite briefly.
But as the scale of price raises so the recognition! Between 20 & 40K, you get an actual wave.
Twizt 40k and 80k Both front seaters wave and smile, BUT!!! only briefly, the smile that is!
80k-120k Now of course, you are starting to get into showing all you dentures, both frontseaters, and ankle biters are actually released from their fetters to wave too

Now Mate!! Now comes the biggys! from 120k- 200k! & up

Now you greet these Knights of the highways and byways with enthusiastic wave-a-thons, you try to flick your business card thro their window, your off sider bares all, your kids are offered in slavery, you actually flash, your headlights!!! your dog/dogs howl a greeting AND! even the fluffy animals on your dash dance!

You see AM tiz all a question of Kudos.:hugs:

Sort of!:drinks:

We wave to most other vans except on dual carriageways/motorways. At times round here near Narbonne there are so many moho’s that you need a mechanical arm to keep up.
Most wave back, even the French, but the real miserable lot are the ‘cloggies’. They rarely wave back. But, I suppose, if you spent your life living below sea level in a damp, cold climate, you would be a miserable bugger too. :(

When we drove a T2, almost all T2 and Splitty van drives wave with the traditional first and pinky finger salute. Some T5s wave to each other. I’ve not given or received one wave sinc3 owning the Kingham.

Most motorcyclists nodd or wave, sometimes with a leg. In Europe it’s always a hand wave, not always as easy in the UK as it’s your throttle hand.

If the roads not too busy I try to veer over the central reservation whilst winding the window down in preparation for a double fist bump followed by a finger slide. It's a way of life man :roflmto:

Used to wave and be waved at when we had a coach built. Now we are in a PVC we rarely get waved at, so now rarely wave - although I will make an effort for other PVC drivers. Sadly few wave back...

We wave but not at PVCs as we can't tell they're not delivery vans till they're past.

Yes -- ours is a PVC and you generally can't tell until it's too late whether it's a MoHo or a bog-standard van.

Also, these days it seems the windscreens are often so tinted that you can barely see the occupants anyway, so wouldn't be able to tell whether they were waving or not!

Tell me what it is will you hill,,,,
I could do with a secret sign!! X

How would I know ? If I even hinted I knew I would be hunted down.

Address your request for inclusion to Der Fuerher, Hymer, Germany and for gods sake make sure your Lederhosen are in pristine condition when you go for the interview.

Ha, it's my job to wave, (sometimes very enthusiastically) from the passenger seat... it does confuse sometimes, as our Moho is LHD....We get lots of waves in return, but did notice the Dutch aren't generally wavers...doesn't stop me trying to convert them, though.

I wouldn't say it is any more dangerous to wave than a lot of things I could mention. In fact my grandson thinks it's great when he's out with me and we both wave!

I live in a state of permanent confusion. When in my MG, I wave to other MG drivers, in the MH I wave to other MH drivers (and usually supermarket delivery vehicles) and when I rode a bike I had the "biker's nod". The problem now is that I need to think what vehicle I am in and by the time I remember, the opportunity is gone! :(

We get as many waves now as we ever did. In fact, in my experience, it's rare to meet non-wavers,

Mind you that is likely because we'll probably wave first, I think you'd have to be a special type of miserable sod to see a wave and not return it. And the odd time this does happen; I'm sure I catch a glimpse of their motorhome facts stickers. :D
Rumour has it that you have almost 200 MH fun stickers on your windscreen, could that be the reason that you get so many waves Jim?

I don't usually notice people waving at me, not sure what I'm doing except watching the road, so if you waved and I didn't wave back, I'm sure my Mrs waved to you instead, she usually does..

Newbie MoHoers.

Love the waving. But we decided it's coachbuilt to coachbuilt, not to PVCs and not to caravanners. And generally only on single-carriage way roads, or dual carriageways without a wide reservation and never on motorways. It's a proper wave and a cheery smile, and usually the role of the driver not the first officer.

We may have overthought this! :-)

I always stick my arse out of the window :)

Me too...........

I don't wave any more as the last time I took a hand off the wheel I veered across the road and had a nasty accident. When I told the copper that the other bloke was on the phone and eating a pie he just shrugged and said that a man can do whatever he likes in his own conservatory.

Forgot to say when walking out and about we also always wave to Fire engines! Goes back to my childhood, my grandchildren do the same and we wave at Police cars and they always wave back, so there

Never do it, there are sooooo many on the road now you’d spend half your journey time waving to random strangers.

It depends on where we are - if its out in the wilds and we see another motorhome we'll wave. At the moment we're in Lapland and see maybe two or three MHs a day... very worthy of a wave and a smile!

I got fed up with it generally a long time ago. We'd wave at everyone and not get one back at in return. It all gets a bit silly and meaningless.
