Is A Gas Bbq Cheating?

Our gas BBQ has a layer of Lava Rock above the gas burner. The rock gets hot which cooks the meats, thereby causing the juices to drip on to the hot rock, which then smokes off giving the smoked BBQ flavour to the meats.

Yes, In our garden we have a big gas Weber. They have what they call flavouriser Bars, these are a peaked roof shape pieces of steel over each line of flame, they take all the heat. They add that “cooked on a BBQ” flavour because drippings, marinades and juices from food being cooked fall down onto the red hot bars, and are vaporized and circulate back up to the food. As tasty as a charcoal? I can't tell the difference.

Gas only for us as there’s too many places that won’t accept charcoal in Summer. Also use gas at home for convenience.

We do ours in the oven. Sick of cleaning bbq. Put everything including tomatos, cucumber peppers etc on the big oven tray.
Set for 30 mins. Go outside and drink beer. 30 mins later everything is cooked perfectly. Née bother.

Chesney the way to go if you want to use charcoal.
Bit big for the van though
I'm not a fan of charcoal BBQs on camp sites

Charcoal by preference (Kamado and Cobb), but gas if necessary or required.

FWIW if you’re looking for a gas BBQ to run from a modern MoHo’s onboard supply it’s worthwhile trying to locate one that’s rated for the 30mb propane (gas rating I3 B/P 30mb) for compatibility. If you subsequently want to use it on a standalone propane bottle, then l/h POL 30mb regulators are available from the likes of Primus.

Yes

Other options are more convenient, quicker but are not bbq.

BBQ is charcoal, end of.

A few million Saffers and Ozzies, who know a thing or two about BBQ's may disagree.
Coal is what is used on a 'real' BBQ!
Ideally hard steaming coal, none of your house coal or brown lignite.

I was once involved in cooking(spit roast) a full size red deer over an open fire , you would not believe the amount of wood it took and how long the cooking went on for , but the flavour was worth it . :)
I do believe you, having been involved with a hog roast.

Took two hours to get the fire to the right level of hot coals before starting cooking the hog which then took a further 12 hours!

The fire was lit the evening before with the cooks were going through the entire night so that hog was ready for a late lunch the next day!
Amazing food, amazing experience, but I'd not do it again.

Reported today that the Fire chiefs are asking for a blanket BBQ ban, not just in public places but in your own gardens too, is that overkill? And are we going to get hairy arsed firemen jumping over the garden fence and hosing your gas BbQ down cause some nosey neighbour can’t tell the difference between GAS and Charcoal ? 😆😆😆😆😆

The trouble with a blanket ban is the type of person who isn't safe to be left alone with a bbq (the ones that bury disposable bbq's at the beach, or put the still smouldering ones in plastic waste bins) will just carry on as normal ?
On another note, I wouldn't dream of using bbq lighter fluid or "instant light" charcoal as it does taint whatever you're cooking. Some of the solid firelighters aren't too bad though, like the Aussie heat bead ones or those twisty wood shaving type but a chimney starter, decent lump wood and a couple of pages of newspaper will have you going in under 15 minutes.

WoW! Thanks for all the views :)
It seems the gas Cadac is a clear winner - any particular recommendations - I would guess cooking for 4 inc. will be our maximum - we must be anti-social :) :)
