Introducing a new dog to our dog what is the best way ?

I know there are some people on here who are going to think I am crazy, but when my dog died I lay beside him on the floor with a blanket wrapped around us both for 12 hours before the vet could come and collect him. He was still warm when they put him in the body bag. I was determined they wouldn't have to break his bones to get him inside the bloody thing he was so big. I loved that dog like I have never loved anyone before in my life.

I can understand that

The last night of my horse's life I spent in the stable with him. November 1996 and we had a huge fall of snow. I didn't go prepared to check him out so I was wrapped in a smelly horse rug all night. Martin wondered where I was and joined me. He (Martin) was suffering with (not known at the time but symptoms from) Lyme disease, but he stayed with me and Indian through the night.

My old pal, Indian. In his, and my, very early years.

You gave your dog love till the end and beyond when I put down my last dog but a few months ago I cryed like a baby and lay on the floor with him for as long as I could
When I pick up his coler it still in the house it brings a teer still.
Thay give you unconditional love soften you hart for ther hole life then brake it when thay go.

Still miss my dog over 30 years on.

She was very gentle but always second in command, I was top of the pack and she was my beta - even my parents' neighbours massive GSD was aware of her status!!!! No snap at other dogs, just sheer attitude let them know I was in charge and she was the enforcer. lol

When my father in law bought a pup and introduced him she took one look, growled and put a paw, very gently, on his head. They were great friends all their lives but she was always the boss and after time apart he would crawl to her on his belly and whine until she gave him a lick.

So Ginam do you have a new member of the pack? 🫣
Yep. I am picking up the lovely Leo on Friday evening. It is going to be emotional as the girl who is parting with him is a nurse and working back to back shifts at the moment and knows she is doing the right thing for her puppy but her boyfriend is devastated and is finishing work early so he can say goodbye to him. My world is about to be turned upside down with this pup, I have been going around the house moving stuff I care about to higher ground out of the way from him :giggle:

Of course you are right. I am saying just go and fetch him and look after him till he's found a home. But I know I will be besotted with him and he won't be going anywhere.

Very sound advice from others. I would say that if he is 10mths old and been left on his own, be prepared for some maybe quite challenging behaviours. He will probably not have been socialised and never learnt any commands. Is there a good dog trainer near you who can help? I know from experience how challenging some pups can be. Our younger one was the most I have ever had. It took til he was 2 before he calmed down and 5 before his brain caught up. I have had probably close to 50 dogs in that time never as bad as him and i got him as a baby pup!
Graham Hall's ( Dogs behaving very badly) book is full of excellent advice.

Thank you. I am expecting the worst but hoping for the best. He may have chewing issues I suspect with being left for so long. I will be with him all day most days as I work from home. I don't want to get in the habit of having him sleeping on the bed with me though like I did with my Stanley. l won't be leaving him in the same room at night with my other dog until I am sure they are ok together. I have been reading up on the breed and it looks like I have another rabbit and rat catcher !!

Gina

One thing we did do before we got our new puppy was rub a towel over her to collect her scent and then put it near our older dogs bed for her to get used to the idea of a new dog. When we brought her home our older dog went wild with excitement and they settled down quickly together. That was with a puppy but it might be worth seeing how yours reacts to the new dog's scent in his home

Lots of " brain games" for him. Usually lots cheap on Ebay. And probably " losing his nuts" I couldn't stand all that naughtiness and testosterone. For the chewing I found Jamaican Seriously Hot Chilli Sauce" on the favoured item stopped him. Romi's favourite was a new oak table! Tabasco just added to the flavour for him. Good luck. He will turn out to be a lot of fun and grateful to you for saving him from boredom

Lots of great advice on here. Having always kept two dogs we have done the introductions a few times. I believe it is critical to do it on neutral ground, take them for a walk together before entering the house. Put all toys away at first and it is important to keep very calm and not to fuss either dog. Just pretend you don't care!!!
Very good luck, we have never regretted having a second dog.

Keep the information coming.
When my GSD pup attacked the skirting boards while teething I tried mustard. Didn't work though.
Meg seriously attacked a stool. Spice is a bit posh and would only chew on proper dog chews.

Yes I was just thinking I need to put all of Jack's toys away. If the new pup grabs one of them It will be fisticuffs !!

Another thing I've thought of is feeding time. Either end of the same room or separate rooms. Lots of fights start over food. I always feed the old dog first. I've always had at least 2 dogs ususlly 5 years apart.

Our dogs have never even thought about using the others food bowl. I think it may be a breed thing though, border collies are not possessive about food, whereas labradors are quite the opposite. When we looked after my stepsons labby we had to feed him in a cage to stop him stealing from the others.

My daughter just got a golden retriever puppy a few weeks back as she thought their new house would be ready, instead the puppy has moved in with us and Toby our 14 year old Jack Russell. At first Toby had to set some guidelines which Harris is now happy with.
Now the best of friends and inseparable.

My friend's Boxer had just had 7 pups - first time Mum.

Her other dog is fascinated but the new Mum isn't having her anywhere near and it's "stink eye" if the older dog gets too close. The older (Jill Russell) dog also had pups a few years back and was so proud she would bring a pup to be admired before returning it to the nest before she brought the next one to be looked at.

The new pups are so new they don't have eyes open yet.

And no, I am not going to have one.

You’re welcome to him as he’s a grumpy old bugger πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
It’s amazing how quick they sort themselves out if you leave them to it, Toby isn’t an aggressive dog by any means but a few growls here and there seemed to work.

Maybe I need to learn to growl 🀣

In typical puppy mode he can go from an absolute angel and a delight to a terrorist and destroyer in no time at all.

But , he is only 14 weeks and we are getting there.
It could do with being soon or wife will need a blood transfusion πŸ˜‰

dogs are very good at deciding whose top dog it rarely draws very much blood
Sadly drawing blood is exactly why we had to find the right home for the 1yesr old rescue we took.
The damage he was doing and the blood he was drawing from our older spaniel was not at all acceptable. Never mind the vet bills that came each time.
When neither backs away then it can be a huge problem.

Totally agree. Not fair on the old dog at all.

It depends on the dogs, we do house / pet sitting and take our 12 + dog with us she is poodle x yorkshire, one sit we have done a couple of times we met on neutral ground the first time. πŸ™‚

Another two dogs and straight in the gate no problem, and to be honest all dogs are bigger than ours, and ours is not bothered when we fuss other dogs. 😁

We pulled into a drive at one place, our Izzy was out the camper and walked past the owners pug and was exploring. :Eeek:

We do loads of single dogs/ guinea pigs / tortoise a cat izzy is not over keen on cats. 😁

We are doing a cocker poo at the moment, just let ours in the garden they get on fine. 😁

As I say it all depends on the dogs, ours has lots of doggie friends, she is well socialised and well travelled πŸ˜‰ might even be multilingual. 😜 😁 Bob.

Ours also meet lots of dogs at home and out on walks but it can be quite different one on one with an only dog. I'm sure with a little preplanning and a calm demeanor it will all go perfectly and next week we will be looking at 2 new best friends. Hope we get lots of pics πŸ“Έ

I have just found out that the puppy (Leo) has been chewing the skirting boards at his home. Not shocked by it at all. I knew he would have problems like that with being left for so long alone. I can't wait to get him here, looks like I have a lot of hard work coming !!!
