If a tree falls on it then your house insurance will defo cover that or your neighbours or the council.

**In fact it has just come back to me that there is someone on here recently where trees fell on 3 vehicles in his proerty from National trust land & they refuse to have anything to do with it 2 x vehicles had to be claimed on there own insurance & the other was uninsured. Assuming you have other means of transport I think insuring your van is a case of IF WHEN & WHAT

IF & WHEN you can or intend to use it
WHAT your van is worth to you (not just its cash value)
WHAT security you've deployed
IF you have finance in place
IF you are prepared to gamble
IF you are happy to cover its loss
IF you can find cover at the right price
IF you think you're being ripped off
IF your driving history reduces your premium next year

My van is worth somewhere in the region of 20k I am nearly 80 years old, I live in the New Forest area and my renewal quote starting this May is £430 which includes European cover. My policy is loaded because there are 2 other drivers and I had a little shunt (my fault) in Oct 2015. I have strong security in place and I am tempted to insure the van at the same time my car insurance is due in Nov. At that time I can say I've not had an accident in 5 years and hopefully get a reduction on combining both car and van policies.

I believe you can only make third party claims for tree damage if the owners were negligent i.e. knew it was in a dangerous condition and did nothing about it. The same as a freak storm blowing roof tiles onto a neighbours property.

If you value something insure it, if you don’t care much then perhaps take the risk yourself. You can only claim from third parties if you can prove they could have foreseen the problem and should have done something about it.

No...no Rolexes...I keep them at home....but Mountain Bikes, walking equipment, tents, Garmin walking GPS, clothes, shoes, tools, cameras, Go Pro, tripods, deck chairs, tables, BBQ, outdoor electric hob, bike helmets, towels, sat nav, micro cards walking maps for GPS for all Alps, books, pots, pans, plates, glasses....I could go on....it’s surprising how it adds up....its like the Generation Game Conveyor belt with Bruce Forsyth trying to remember what was in there....oh wireless headphones, Bose Soundlink Mini.....duvets, pillows sporting equipment.....arrrrgg !

Mmmm well You have heard the term, where there is a blame, there is a claim! A good solicitor would soon turn that around but I'm only guessing house insurance may cover damage to vehicles on the premises, chimneys & trees falling carry a blaim as they are owned by someone and it's their responsibility to make their estate safe. I had a customer whos range rover fell into a sink hole on his drive. It wasn't an actual sink hole but it was an old well covered up. Anything bizarre can hapen and your house insurance should cover it surely? If not you can sue them.

I have just got my renewal notice through for a months time. I contacted the NFU who I use and asked for a quote for off the road insurance whilst this farce goes on, I think for many months or a year At least.
My premium for a year with two drivers and continental cover, fully comp is £484 and the year off the road in my own storage they asked for £402 for fire and theft cover only, no accidental cover and no Road traffic act cover.
I was somewhat taken aback at that rate seeing as it is alarmed tracked covered with a custom cover, locked behind a six foot wall and two cctv cameras covering it.
I thought 'sod it' I will take off the wheels, and drop it down on the axles to make the cat difficult to get at and leave it there. Without damage cover what am I paying for? Do any of you have other ideas of what to do, if this period extends into next year whilst we all lose everything financially, without the use of our assets.

Actually the best solution is to not insure it but not drive it so thats negated. Then move into it full time! Whose gunna vandalise a camper with the owner sat in it!!

Storms, a falling tree, tiles from the roof, lightning strike, fire, flood etc. all to save a few quid. I know I would not risk it.

Yes but my argument is those scenarios you just mentioned should be covered by house insurance! Or maybe not? Its worth looking into it but its always the safe way to fully insuring it.

I will carry on with fully comprehensive, in the hope big time cancelling this years and giving me a refuit blows over soon, I also have a frequent traveller on ET that I want to use this year if I can. It will not be with NFU though as they cocked up big time. They cancelled a perfectly good policy valid for a month and a half , giving me £20.70 refund for that time and then charging £402 for sod all. I} got quotes for fully comp for much less than that,from AIB.
Also my house and property insurance is with the NFU as well. Looking at that as well as they are very dear compared to others even my Brompton cost extra on the household poicy.

As I have already said my home insurance specifically excludes “loss of or damage to motor vehicles” and I can see no reason why they would pay out. If you want to insure a vehicle, insure the vehicle. If you want to insure your house, insure it. I don’t see any reason why an insurer would pay out for something you have chosen not to insure.

Most household policies will charge extra for bikes over a certain value, some others won't insure them at all.

I found that when we bought 2 Gocycles. The values exceeded the John Lewis limit and separate bicycle policies were expensive. They also had very restrictive clauses concerning storage and locking. We changed to John Lewis Specialist Home Insurance which on the face of it is expensive but has very flexible terms including theft of bikes from vehicles. It cost about the same as as 2 bike policies plus standard home insurance but better terms.

When we needed to insure our Bromptons we went with Axa as they added them on at a minimal premium increase cost so it was much cheaper than any other home insurance provider and a lot less than insuring them separately with a bike insurer.

Phoned NFU and the same person apologised and said she misunderstood my last instruction to leave it until the policy expired. Reinstated the old policy. I will still look around and AIB was a lot cheaper than them. Several other companies specialise in MH.

DIY campervan are those insurance references US rather than UK ones? I have not seen options to include motorhomes on any home insurance policies I have looked at but if someone has one that does cover them this could be of interest to many. My home policy specifically excludes motor vehicles.

Yes it looks like it is, i dragged it of the net because i was curious to know myself but the underwriters are global anyway so I'm sure it could be the same. Perhaps its only contents i keep reading but if a tree in your garden fell on someones car then your house insurance should cover that and its that, that got me thinking. Worth looking into other policies maybe, dunno?

Lucky you. I have to insure my vehicles whether in use or not. No doubt somewhere I could find the definition of undriveable if I hoped to save a pound or two.

My daughter had her car crushed by a roadside tree but she had to claim on her car insurance. I think you have to show the tree owner was negligent to claim from them i.e. they should have known the tree was dangerous and done something about it. Healthy looking trees can come down in freak storms and that is just your bad luck, that is why we buy insurance.

I contacted my insurance company, Saga, and reduced the mileage from 6k to 3k now it looks unlikely we’ll be using the van as much, they kicked back £20 to me. Worth a phone call.
