in search of experience and wisdom!
Getting van next month, and most miffed that LV, who I've been with for years, "don't do" Motorhome insurance, so now trying every lead possible to get best / affordable insurance!
Also Lloyds breakdown cover via the AA don't cover +3500kg van! So again looking for best recovery package for 7metre, 3880kg van!
So, not going to ask for "the best" but recommendations as to good / supportive insurers and breakdown service.
Is it worth getting van insurance with built in breakdown cover (e.g. Safeguard) or is experience showing best keep policies separate, and again any experience welcomed.

We're insured through CMHM for the Van & AA Breakdown Ins in Gt Britain ..... but going to France in Sept so gone through Red Pennant for Europe Cover with CMHC

Adrian Flux - No experience of them re MoHos but have bike policy with them and plan to try them next year

Comfort - Will likely require a fitted tracker to cover with no grace period

Ripe - 15% discount for Fun members but declined me for no discernable reason

CAMC - plainly you need to be a member

Caravan Guard - Do a cover all policy - insurance and both UK and EU breakdown. EU cover extends up to 270 days annually. Available 7/7 by phone an prompt to respond to emails. Not necessarily the cheapest but I cannot be bothered with the pfaff of three separate policies to cover:
Van insurance
UK breakdown
EU breakdown
Life is too short (and there is at least one member on this site who overlooked EU breakdown and picked up a large bill inconsequence!)

I am with Caravan Guard - Very easy to ring them and use them as a base quote.

P.S. There are now quite a few s7 self-fit trackers:

I bought a Matrix iQ MagTrack+ for £175 inc a 1 year subscription via CAMC. It is rechargeable!!

We are with Safeguard and have just renewed. Check weight and length restrictions for UK and Europe for breakdown though as I noticed there was a recovery restriction for Europe of 7m and 3500kg which would be no good for our 7.5m 4500kg Motorhome should the need arise.

Adrian flux for us as best price for what we need. Nationwide flex plus for breakdown, health insurance etc. Breakdown covers any vehicle your in & up to 8(?) meters Motorhome.
Account is £18.50 a month. Last two years we have had fair share payments of £200 a year. So breakdown cover effectively free!

Thanks folks of all the comments, would have liked to use CAMC but looking at price, breakdown cover and reviews Caravan Guard got my custom!
Thanks again!

Just renewed mine with Caravan Guard includes breakdown for an extra £35 thats for a 8m 4.5t Swift. 2 years NCD replacement cost £75k and for the year was £530. Thought that was very good, and you actually speak to a person.

Good luck

Be aware that the telephone number that Safeguard provide for European breakdowns doesn’t work. We know from recent personal experience.

Useful thread, thanks. My insurance is up for renewal when I’m in France so currently sorting it out. Have been through all the suggestions above and my existing insurer, Comfort, still comes out the cheapest by the time I’ve ticked the various boxes for cover not included in initial quote from other insurers. Actually the premium this year is £20 cheaper than last year’s, which is a pleasant surprise. The whole thing took about 20 mins whilst sat in Cafe Nero, the wonders of modern technology.

NFU for insurance (including Europe)
And Nationwide Flexplus for breakdown (up to 7500kg)
Works for me.

Another shout out for Caravan Guard, they are excellent to deal with, they also cover breakdown of trailers attached to the moho with no max length.

We had three vehicles insured with LV but over the past couple of years they have priced themselves out of the market. Our last vehicle with them was the moho and they have just written to say they won't renew the insurance when it expires... so that's it for LV.
As for breakdown, which also used to be with LV until they stopped doing that too, now we are with Autoaid: £77 for personal cover Europe-wide for the two of us, which seems a bargain to me.

Hi we’ve been with Autoaid for years but as far as I know ;and after a phone call) they don’t do European breakdown cover. We recently broke down on our way to the tunnel 😭 and they were fantastic, cam belt went so no hope of roadside fix but they got us back home to Cornwall on a low loader. Can’t praise them enough but will give them another ring about cover abroad, when we get our van back !!

No sorry, LV did but Autoaid don't. They have a separate company that gives quotes for Europe but cars only, not vans..

I renewed with LV= last week and premium was over £260 less than last year which was pleasing.
Betty is an older lower value c class.... Parked on the street.
Other brokers were unable to quote due to street parking so a double releaf.

We're with nationwide flex. £18 per month, but as a mutual, in the last couple of years you've got most of that back in their 'dividend' to members.

Covers all owned cars and motorhomes. Ours is just under 8m and 5.4t.

Only significant limitation is European recovery. Motorhome must be under 8m (!).

I choose to do insurance separately, since nationwide does the breakdown and travel insurance.

Give Ripe a try get 15%off
Using link
I did give them a try. Got a good quote online. Raised an elementary query about it by email. It took 6 days for them to reply. I was satisfied with the answer and so pressed the button to accept entered my (clean) driving licence number and was refused cover without explanation. (I tried several times) By the time I got that answer I was due to go on holiday and had completely lost the momentum of being early to get a quote. They were a total waste of my time.

Did you try calling and asking, why?

No I was too fed up with them by then. I was in the middle of packing to head for the Newhaven ferry when the email arrived and I then wasted 90 minutes trying accept their offer and pay. There was no telephone number on the screen regarding their refusal inviting me to ring so I got on with packing and holidaying and checked out other insurers on my return.
I might try them again next year but if I cannot get an answer to a straight forward email in 6 days what chance of speedy claims handling I ask myself?

P.S. The 15% is only available online not by phone.
