Installing diesel heater in Autotrail Chieftain

Fit 2 silencers to make it quieter outside.

You can get silencers for Eberspachers. Some manufacturers didn't fit them to save money. There's one for the exhaust and another for the air inlet. They are effective. :)

Thank you for the info, appreciated . As far as I can see there is one silencer/muffler on our heater. At the exhaust end outside the van. Will explore a bit more when next at the van (its in a storage yard), as I really would like to minimise the noise of the otherwise excellent unit .

All I can say, whatever you fit... DON'T RESTRICT THE FLOW AT ALL or you'll be smoking out the campsite and sooting up the burn chamber (because it can't burn it efficiently)

I can only confirm Jaws findings. I bought a 3Kw one for £71.99:xThumb:with the intention of installing when at home but due to circumstances I had to fit it in the Uk a few months back. Works a treat. Fisrt used Overnighting in Plymouth on one of the worst few days possible with gale force winds & rain. Heated the van no problem & also dried the towels used for drying the dog.
last week we left Devon returning home. Wednesday night was freezing at Canterbury P&R but heater coped easily. Thursday at Nonancourt it was gale force winds & rain & no problems.
Friday another rainfest & freezing outside Poitiers but coped as usual.Saturday was near Som port & temp was around 12º but we left it on low overnight. Last night near Valencia we didn't bother although I fired it up first thing to take the chill of.
initial start up inside is a bit noisy but quietens right down once it is warmed up.
Outside I can't hear it. I actually have to use my hand or foot to check the exhaust. I did cut the pipe in half & fit the silencer in the middle so I've no idea whether this makes a difference.
I usually try to start it with engine running but have also started it on 2 occasions with engine off & then turned it off & restarted it during the night & van has started with out the slightest problem in the morning-
To say I am extremely pleased would be an under statement.
Economy I've no idea but am running on a separate tank at the moment & have used around 10 litres since last Wednesday for approximately 55hours use?

How noisy are they on the inside?
To get a reasonable duct run am thinking of mounting next to handbrake with duct facing rearwards running under dinette with a couple of outlets there, and duct continuing to rear of van.
Plenty of space as lhd a class, wont hinder getting in or out.
Routing exhaust might be a challenge!
But will it be too noisy sat just above it on rotated drivers seat? or will it need some sort of box to reduce noise level inside the van?

I cannot comment really, as mine is located under one of the bench seats and is pretty quiet, no noisier than the OEM gas system in fact.
The noisy bit is the exhaust and combustion chamber inlet, both of which are external to the van
I suspect you would be ok but a box lined with a bit of sound deadening felt would def. make it almost silent !

Just ordered one £99 with discount(got to find somewhere to put it now ! ) Will use as assist/back up to my Propex or use in man cave at home. May be useful as back up in van as gas refill places are getting rarer.
