Rally Chat Inexcusable and Unacceptable

Sorry guys, I may have been one of the culprits. I tried to make the Stratford show last Thursday, and as mentioned on the Stratford post, got as far as Newbury, but had to turn round and head home. Was hoping to be better by Sunday, even yesterday, but still not safe enough just yet to drive. In future I will send a note to the event Marshalls. I do appreciate all the work that Brisley, Toledo and other halves do for these events, long days without much respite. So personal apology from me. Hope you are all enjoying Stratford.
Don't think it was you. Two at the small meet at Kelso did not turn up. They had no excuse as Helen (the rally organiser) had PM'd all the attendees a few days before with her and her husband's mobile numbers to call if there were any problems.

If the marshals were in agreement, could just one of them allow they're mobile number to be posted should you meet with undue delay. URGENT contact only
Geoff
Think quite a few do give a mobile contact no. already as it is helpful - we sent our via PM to everyone going to Mello & will be doing the same for Sunshine & BunkFest.

Organisers will have to start doing what the airlines do and over book the pitches.

If everyone does turn up, then a couple of the "boys" can get a randomly selected Funster to "move off" and go over to general camping with the Riff Raff, non Funsters...

But you did let people know and the reason why, so sorry you couldn't make it, :)

Much prefer smaller meets personally . Didn't get chance to talk to half the people at Stratford.

Can I play devil's advocate and say that occasionally there could be genuine reason ... e.g. you put your name down on the reserve list and wait and wait and wait and wait and eventually just forget/give up ... and make other arrangements. . And may forget to ask to be removed.

You have no reason then to look and notice that you are on the main list ... some of the reserve lists are soooo long and some of us have yonky old laptops that watched threads fail to show up on .... no excuse for forgetting to say take me off reserve .. but as Brian says ... a lot of us are old fogeys and I am amazed how this year I forget stuff/can't get up off the floor/fall asleep too early ... :(

Maybe there's a way of recording repeat offenders and stopping them from booking?

The reason may be a sudden or tragic event so a rally may be the last thing on their mind. However if this is not the reason a courtesy post on the thread is important.

That's easy, just shoot them. That will keep the rest in check.

Surely they would already be repeat offenders by doing it again.

Might be due to the average advanced age on here!! People forget... Perhaps there should be a way of automatically PM'ing those who have put down their names?? Perhaps there is??

I usually can't wait for the ones I've booked - perhaps I need to get out (even) more??

I sent a PM to everyone (including the "maybes") a week before the rally and included two mobile numbers. No excuse not to send a "sorry, can't make it" text - no reason needed, at least I would have known.

Very occasionally things can go pearshaped though,

Yes, and at the last minute. Some things are so serious that nothing else is important which is why I refuse to name and shame. Some people are just very rude and selfish but sometimes s*** happens and I would feel so awful should that be the case.

It's a text age, maybe a text number should be part of the rally booking.

Good idea asking for a text number from the people attending. To be kept confidential of course.

Also the marshall is so busy on "the day" an internet message on the arrival day is pretty useless - assuming there is internet access in any case. A text message to a mobile number in the case of delay or very late cancellation would work much better for me :)

I have been to my parents today, lovely to see them but not at all relaxing - and I am working tomorrow!!!! Hoping to do Kelso 2018 but will wait for @irnbru and @normanandsue for dates of anything they hope to organise as Kelso really needs to be just before or after that for people working their way north or south as the case maybe :)

No, you two are safe lol. If you didn't get a private message with my contact phone numbers you were not on my list :) so no need to hide in the naughty corner.

Excellent idea, even if it has been mocked. If Jim has to put this thread on then its obviously not just one meet this has occurred and the excellent people who put great effort into organising, in all sorts of conditions, need support on this issue. With all the technology ect on this site, surely Jim,there must be a way of policing this issue.

/Rant Mode On.... If you have booked on a rally and cannot go, you should at least have the decency and common courtesy to contact the organiser and let them know you are not coming. Just not showing up, really is not on. Waiting up for people who are not coming to your rally is no fun at all, nor is depriving others of a space at that rally. It's both rude and disrespectful to the people who give their time to organise events for us to just not turn up. Those who do this in future risk becoming an ex-funster, we really don't need such selfish members. /off :D
Firstly let me say, There's no excuse for ignorance or lack of consideration.
I have run many rallies and encouraged prepayment, now if you have a list of people that have pre-paid what difference does it make if they turn up or not, you have their money, you do not have a responsibility for their up-bringing or their choices.
I am Ex.Army and enjoy my freedom to make my own choices, I am new to this Forum but may well re-consider my joining any further if "FUN" means a Dictatorship.

Erm, I think your missing the point, many of the rallies are not prepaid, people not turning up and not saying anything means people that might want to go can't! I agree with you, prepayment, or at least a deposit, should be a requirement, then it's up to the non attendees what they do about "their" money. I am not ex army and I too enjoy the freedom to make my own choices, believe me, "FUN" is not a dictatorship, just ask Jim Amin!o_O

Anything run by one person is a dictatorship, in this forum its benevolent dictatorship.:)

I think another point you missed is that unpaid rally marshals are having to give up their time waiting for these people to show up. How would you feel if you stood there waiting all evening and they didn't show up, prepaid or not.

I think @Jim is right no excuses for not turning up without a text even.

Maybe an idea is out of the funds involving a rally a throw away 20 quid phone , a rally phone ,could be purchased to give a number out then no excuses for not getting in touch.
I also think the 15 quid subs runs this forum and the time effort and work involved .
Some people think what do i get for my 15 quid ?
If after all the help and advice and opinions of real people about motorhoming is not enough there is friendship help in bad situation and a community not to mention the members of this community giving up there time and effort free of charge organising and marshaling rallys .
Its not a dictatorship here one bloke owns owns the Fun and mostly it runs its self with a report button on every post.
Have been on many forums and dc hubs etc.
This one works.

Hi Mr John Hughes... Motorhome Fun does not charge members to park on the Fun section at the big motorhome shows, so money has nothing to do with it...

The volunteer marshals, who give their time for free, would rather be enjoying themselves with all their friends than sitting at the entrance waiting for people who have said they are coming but then don't bother to turn up.

JJ

I volunteer for a small organisation which arranges a few events each year. One member books himself on to every one and never shows up. We've never even seen him!

Hi had one who would book every meet i had then cancel at the last min
But there are several who done the same trick
Can get a bit disappointing especially sum of the excuses thay give when thay had no intention on turning
Or thay divide to go to another meet and not even bother letting you know
Bill

But when you organise a small rally there are no "funds" for that type of expense or certainly not the ones I have done, you have a camping field that charges £x per night so that's what we charge the Funsters attending, I think the point is that the person volunteering to run the event should not have to go to the trouble of cheap phones for cancellations etc etc, I do agree with deposit or pre-payment though especially where numbers are limited.
