I'm assuming this is an airbag ECU failure

Ok. Put Multiecuscan on to determine fault but it couldn't find the airbag ECU. I think I have to look for the reason for this. Is there a fuse that the ECU runs off?
My Foxwell scanner couldn’t find/connect either, turned out to totally duff, not faulty that could be rectified, it had to be replaced by Crashdata.

Did you have to get it proxi aligned?

Did you have to get it proxi aligned?
You will need any replacement proxi aligned.
It would be worth comparing the cost of new and aligned from crash data to supplied and fitted by fiat and what warranty comes with the replacement.

Anyone tried proxi alignment using Multiecuscan?

yes, it took me a few goes so best to practice on the offline a few times and ensure you got the process and procedure sorted.
( a local fiat specialist could not proxi my new airbag ECU so i had no choice but to persevere.
you can save the current configuration just in case you do something you should not. not easy to explain but there is plenty on youtube to guide you.

Contacted my local Fiat Professional place (Simpsons motorhomes). Looks like an all in price of £450 including the initial plug in diagnostic. Going to be the end of the month before they can action it though. I hope they can get it sorted before we try our first trip to Spain in February! Interestingly a closer Fiat Professional garage quoted me £174 just for the diagnostic! I quickly put the phone down after that.

I've also found that the cab battery is duff so have had to order one of those!

Crashdata want £368 for a coded replacement unit and probably wont guarantee it as the faults are voltage related! Just in case anyone else has to go this route.

Did you check out Northern Auto Tech?
I sent them an email on Saturday but they've not replied yet. I'll call them tomorrow (they shut at 4pm).

Phoned them today (they hadn't answered my email). They can fix one that the diagnostic tools cant communicate with. If not they will return at no cost (apart from presumably the postage). So will send off tomorrow.

I thought I would start the van engine yesterday after about a month
I did the usual procedure at start up and waited until most of the lights had gone out.
The engine started straight away but within 30 seconds the airbag error light came on :swear2: :swear2:

It certainly was not a low battery voltage fault. Starter and Hab batteries are all full from the solar panels charging.
The sun was shining and the batteries were reading 13.5V
Is this now a 'too high a voltage' fault?
Is this another issue that MoHo's can suffer from during the winter?

It came on in October on our tour of France but amazingly, it went out again after a few days :Eeek:

Is there any rhyme or reason behind this bloody airbag module failure? :Eeek:

Hi, Fiat Multiecuscan or Peugeot Diagbox are needed to read fault codes depending on base chassis, an Airbag warning light illuminated indicates there is no communication from controllers associated with the SRS, the mileage recorder will flash constantly when a controller is not communicating, it does not have to be the Airbag electronic controller module at fault one cant take a guess, I have posted a diy Mes installation if you are not familiar.

Instructions on how to get connected to version 5 Multiecuscan for under £80.00 lawfully, is posted on Motorhome facts forum under Electrical, hope this helps ease your anxieties funsters.

Had a Multiecuscan connected to mine but it could not connect to the ecu. I’ll see what Northern Auto Tech say next week.

I have not run ours for a month and mot is in a month I have been hesitating to run it up for fear of the same happening.
But I need to bite the bullet incase it happens to me.

A point on anyone considering buying multiecuscan

It will only work on models upto 2019, according to gendan from then on an electronic lock was placed on the system to prevent anything other than official fiat garage access.

Me too I always charge mine for a day before
I have access to ehu which I use for a short time occasionally along with 250 watts of solar which needs a bit of help at this time of year.
But I am always concerned after any layup

With the best and biggest precautions it still seems to be a lottery. Mine failed last year while running the van every day on a tour of France. The bloody light went out again after four or five days
Good luck :drinks:

OBD2 diaganostics is user friendly once it is fully understood, diagnoses of faults takes a lot more understanding as a full working knowledge of all components electrical and mechanical is needed to come to the correct conclusion, a no connection to a controller message with Multiesuscan would indicate that the incorrect interface cable is being used to access a particular controller,as CANBUS can have up to 5 buses [ or circuits for older viewers ] the main high speed bus has the body control module incorporated into it and this is the gateway to lower speed buses, with multiecuscan there are various coloured cables to connect to the different controllers, multiecuscan website not Gendan gives a description, after 2018 a SGW [ security gateway [ was incorporated into the OBD port this will need the bypass cable google SGW for a description, remember every conceivable controller within the Controller Area Network communicates with all controllers those which are on lower speed buses are fault tolerant the pin out numbers of the OBD port can be discussed later if needed, diagnostics are complicated by people hope this helps Funsters. [ SGW anti theft deterrent ]

Can you plug the multiecuscan directly into the airbag module. I seem to remember some of the people I asked tto look at it plugge3d in directly. They could read the fault but had to send it off to Northern Autotech to get it cleared as couldn't clear it with the standard multiecuscanner.

If I do buy a new one (expect mine will trip again at some point) I have neighbours with multiecuscanners and would appreciate any pointers to instructions on proxy setting.

Not heard of it direct into the airbag ecu normally needs to be read through the obd port as it looks at communication with the main systems

Hi, read my original post for a link to motorhome facts forum Electrical, covering in detail the easy set up of Multiecuscan use the free simulation mode to get a better understanding, one must get familiar with controller area network and then the logic will dawn unravelling the cloak and dagger mystery associated with OBD2, as mentioned there is more than one bus ie data transfer method with OBD2, MES uses different coloured interface connectors to access the different buses which will have the chosen controller module one would wish to access, an example would be the GREEN INTERFACE CONNECTION CABLE for access to the bus which incorporates the airbag controller module, but as mentioned all controllers communicate with every other associated controller on SRS seat belt restraint, front crash sensors door side impact sensors, fuel cut off, air bags, so any loss in communication with any controller associated with them will illuminate the airbag lamp. if the Mes fault code is a permanent code indicates a particular controller module that is not communicating attempting to clear that code will be unsuccessful until that controller module is repaired, there can be confusion with say the airbag module losing its programmed memory, also if it has stored crash data which needs the internal chip set back to original setting with a separate software set up such as Carprog not the same as Proxi alignment which is the process of configuring a replacement controller into the system with MES. Just to add Peugeot boxer Diagbox software only uses a single interface connection which accesses all of the buses, high speed, medium , low speed fault tolerent etc, the pins of the OBD2 port are numbered they are the connection to the different networks, the Diagbox software interface is holistic the MES software requires a set of different coloured interface connection cables for each network, good luck funsters hope you find this encouraging. MES interface on the right and lft of the image is the yellow interface connection for body control module access used for investigating the tyre pressure monitoring system. controller, TPMS.

For those folks who have had concerns over the repeated failure of the airbag control module and are diy compliant it has been mentioned to myself within professional circles that x290 Fiat Ducato and Peugeot boxer etc motorhome chassis that the air conditioning [ if fitted ] has a drain pipe from the evaporator that should exit outside and in some instances condensation can find a route into the area below where the air bag module is located this is surely worth checking out , also motorhomes in storage look out for condensation on the huge area of internal windshield, investigating this in a workshop which is time consuming has a price if you have the diy skills then it is just your time hope this helps.

There are a few threads here on equipment to run MES. I run MES on a win 10 laptop with the USB OBDlink SX, I also use The Vgate-iCarPro BT4 Bluetooth from ebay (about £25) used with multiecuscan (£50) alfaobd (£31) and torque pro on android phones and tablets (also connect the SX to my phone as well)
For generic info i use torque pro on an android phone and tablet. The only apples i know about is Coxes orange pipins.
It is cheaper to buy a second hand laptop and Multiecuscan than go down the apple route, i now know of 2 people who have gone down the route avoiding ios one new and one 2nd hand laptop. For Boxer and Relay the cheapest simplest route is AlfaObd. Not personnaly used it for boxers as i've a Ducato.
There are a number of Tutorials on Fiatforum .com that may be of help

Backup proxi files on MES
New proxi alignment on MES
DPF pressure sensor diagnosis with MES
MES and Alfaobd PIDs for X290 Ducato

Are the problems specific to the Fiat Ducato or are they also the same for Peugeot Boxer?
I can only see the airbag problems on the Fiat?

Not specific t o Ducato as the same ecu is also used on the other Sevel (peugeot, Citroen) vans
